They should be looking at the city for theft.

The city takes in about 6.9 million in fees at the building dept.but it only costs around 2.8 to run the dept.
State law says a building dept should only collect what it needs in fees to do the job it is required to do.

Thats why when you write a check at the building dept you make it out to the JC treasury. The city takes the extra money and puts it in the general fund.

They should be using the money to run the dept more efficiently. More inspectors more counter help,Ect...

Well, that is some good news anyway. Glad the funds were recovered.

City recoups $1M in wake of investigation into construction office

by Ken Thorbourne -- Jersey Journal
Tuesday September 25, 2007, 3:27 PM

As a result of a police investigation into Jersey City's construction code office, the city has recovered over $1 million from contractors, city officials said.

In April, the city hired Sax Macy Fromm & Co., an accounting firm based in Clifton, to perform a forensic audit of the department.

The audit has so far led to the city collecting more than $1 million from contractors who have done business with the city, officials said.

City officials declined to say whether the previously uncollected money was due to oversight, an antiquated computer system, or deliberate activity on the part of city employees.

The investigation, led by the police department's Special Investigations Unit, is ongoing, police and administration officials said yesterday, but refused to comment further.

For three days in March, neither the public nor employees were allowed access to the Office of Construction Code, while SIU investigators reviewed records and copied checks and files.
