The quote from the story is: "The officers also contacted workers monitoring the city's closed-circuit television cameras and learned cameras had captured images of two men entering and leaving the building, reports said" Why would two people entering a building at 9:03 am cause alarm? When ever we have a crime in a location that there is a CCTV cam, the tapes are reviewed. Obviously, this location was in one of those areas, and I assume they matched the tapes to 2 men by the time the alarms went off. I?m not sure why there is an impression that the cams are not monitored, CCTV has full time, trained staff working 24/7 just not as many as there are cameras. My point is/was that unless you have 1 person per cam. the event my go un-noticed until the tapes are reviewed.

Why don't these cameras have guns mounted on them? And also loudspeakers that could say "Hey You! Stop that!"

It's really not that simple, some crimes have been prevented and some suspects have been apprehended because the person monitoring the cam followed suspicious behavior he/she is able to follow the person moving the lens in do get more detailed info. Otherwise the cams just move in a pre-programmed format (All 78 cams are recording everything it views). Example of my earlier post, so, while they're monitoring cam #1, cam #6 may record a car driving by (split second) clip and that car was used in a crime and the tape is enhanced to get the plate # and suspects are questioned by the detectives reviewing the tape. Cam # 4 may have just recorded a purse snatcher, some crimes happen in a split second again the cams are always recording and archiving the information. IMO the square footage of casino table vs. a city block is not a fair comparison.

Each police station could get their desk sgt to view at least 10 cameras each. He or she can still get there work done and watch the monitors off and on. Most crap will happen late at night anyway.

Wow, those Vegas casinos with 10,000+ cameras must have a huge security staff. 10,000 people all sitting there intently watching a single camera each.

There is currently 78 active CCTV cams in JC. In order to man each camera, we would need 78 employees 24/7.

So these CCTV are not manned 24/7 to report crimes in progress as a proactive measure - That's just fcuking lovely, a woman could be raped right under the nose of one of these CCTV camera knowing no help is on the way until the ordeal is over and if the cops remember to check the cameras - fcuking hopeless. Why not make the image available on the net, so anyone can watch them and call for help?

Two burglars got cash, but cameras saw them
Wednesday, April 04, 2007 Jersey City burglars broke into a building and drilled a hole through a floor on the second story to clean out a grocery store cash register downstairs on Sunday, reports said. Police responded to Newark and Liberty avenues at 9:03 a.m. on a call of an activated alarm and found the building's front door had been kicked in, police reports said. The officers entered the apparently empty building, walked upstairs and found a hole in the floor that was likely cut using an electric saw that was still there, reports said. The officers looked through the hole and saw the open cash register in the Sabzi Mandi grocery store below, reports said. Officers found several items left at the scene by the burglars, reports said. The officers also contacted workers monitoring the city's closed-circuit television cameras and learned cameras had captured images of two men entering and leaving the building, reports said.
