No, that's 540,000 people that commute from outside the CITY (all 5 boroughs). Seems low to me, but then again even 540,000 people commuting from outside the 5 boroughs seems low to me.


540,000 people is 1/3 the population of Manhattan, everyday transiting at least one river. That's a lot of people.

I'm pretty sure that without the WTC funding the union membership wouldn't matter a bit, the increases are almost all to pay for things other than commuting projects.

Does anybody find 256,000 trips per day Mon-Fri to be extremely LOW? That would be only 128,000 people per day using the PATH to commute. That seems surprisingly low to me.

David Samson's quote is pretty funny. The increased PATH ridership is strictly due to increased population as a result of development, primarily in JC and Hoboken.

PATH system reports record ridership for 2011 -- tell us if fare hike should be rolled back

In spite of a 25 cents per ride fare increase that took effect in September, the Port Authority's PATH rail system reported record ridership in 2011, officials said today.

With 76.6 million commuter trips made during the year, it's the highest number commuter trips since the agency took over operation of the system in 1962, the officials said.

The record ridership follows the investment of more than $1 billion in PATH over the past four years for new cars, station upgrades and commencement of installation of a new signal system, they said.

Six of the PATH system's 13 train stations are in Hudson County.

As part of a 10-year, $25 billion capital campaign, the bi-state agency hiked single-ride PATH fares from $1.75 to $2 in September. Toll crossings at the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, George Washington and Bayonne Bridges, and the Outerbridge Crossing also shot up from $8 to $12. Peak hour tolls for E-ZPass users rose from $8 to $9.50.

The record PATH ridership surpassed the previous record of 74.9 million commuter trips in 2008 by 1.7 million trips, officials said. The 2011 ridership number represents a 3.6 percent increase compared to 2010.

The increase in PATH ridership mirrors a trend of strong increases in transit ridership around the region, and around the country, as the traveling public seeks transportation alternatives, officials said.

"Our multi-billion-dollar commitment to transform PATH into a 21st century rail system has paid dividends. More people are taking notice of what PATH has to offer and are choosing it as their preferred mode of travel between New York and New Jersey," Port Authority Chairman David Samson said in a statement.

In November, the Port Authority put the last of its 340 new rail cars into service, completing a three-year, $744 million program that created 700 jobs, the officials said.

Several stations are seeing upgrades as well: Harrison and Hoboken stations are both undergoing renovation. The World Trade Center-Newark line also will see renovations as the platforms eventually will be extended to accommodate 10-car trains.

During a typical weekday, approximately 256,000 trips are made on PATH system. Weekend ridership also is up, as approximately 211,000 trips are made. This represents a 2 percent increase in weekend ridership from 2010. The Harrison station exhibited the strongest weekday growth of all PATH stations at 8.7 percent.
