I love the food trucks of DTJC. They are a huge part of the city's food culture. But there's a place for them. The Newark Ave. pedestrian plaza is not that place.

Ugh. I could do without food trucks on Nwk Ave. I appreciate the extra capacity for walking.
Not sure the exact dimensions but assuming we had 15 feet of sidewalk on each side of Newark Ave. Then with the advent of Restaurant Row, half of that became al fresco seating for restaurants. Then the city threw down those fat concrete planters and half-dead shrubs, and benches, and garbage cans, and bike racks. The sidewalk on Newark was only 3-4 feet wide in a few spots. Real "pinch points" if you think about the capacity of the sidewalk to move people. Now at night, the restaurants take ALL of the sidewalk, leaving the ~20 feet or so of street for walking. And that's fine. Can we enjoy the extra pedestrian capacity instead of looking for ways to fill the space with more crap that's in the way? If you put 102" trucks on the street and 6-7 feet of foodies standing on line, we'll have 3 feet for walking again. Maybe I should've been an engineer. Bottlenecks, even on sidewalks, really annoy me.

While this is true, I believe it's a specific distance from any restaurant (can't find the statute and I'm not at a PC). Maybe they can line up straight down the middle of Newark Ave? That would be awesome! Competition, baby!

Two reasons:
1) This is a trial run for traffic data collection purposes so no formal plans on how the space will be utilized have been announced.. 2) There are laws that prohibit food trucks to park within a designated distance of restaurants. From what I understand each city has their own set of rules and exemptions. Parking in front of a restaurant is usually prohibited.

Why are there no food trucks on Newark
Avenue when it's closed? I think it's a perfect opportunity to showcase them. Did the restaurants complain and keep them out? I say bring the food trucks in! Still plenty of room to walk. And you can eat at the picnic tables.
