Watch the streetscape and street appeal of some neighborhoods turn to crap, with some homeowners building shody eyesore carports that have no reflextion on their 100+ old brownstones or 60's style homes.
This will cause some real siht fights between neighbors, if there isn't strict guidelines to follow.

This does not create car parking spots on the street, because you need to have driveway access.

Planners delay on carports

By a 6-0-1 vote, the Jersey City Planning Board has tabled an amendment that could have paved the way for carports to return.

Prohibited since 2001, the amendment would have recommended the City Council enact legislation to allow property owners with at least 18 feet between their property line and the front of their home to build a carport. The proposed maximum width of the carport was 10 feet.

Several times during the board's meeting, John E. Hamill Jr., the board's attorney, said the board had no power to determine which city agency would enforce and monitor the law. But members voted to table the amendment because they wanted more time to consider the enforcement aspects of the measure.

Ward C Councilman Steve Lipski, who serves as a Planning Board member, told board members it would be "unfair" to pass make a recommendation to the council without thinking through how the proposal would be enforced.

The City Council has the right to consider the issue without Planning Board input. But two council members - Lipski and Ward D Council Bill Gaughan, the council's biggest proponent of carports - indicated the council would wait to act until the Planning Board reconsiders the matter at its May 1 meeting.

A comeback for carports?

But tonight, the Jersey City Planning Board is scheduled to consider a resolution that could pave the way for carports to make a comeback.

The proposed resolution would allow garage-less property owners to construct a parking space in front of their house assuming they have at least 18 feet between their property line and the front of the building, officials said.

Maximum width of the carport would be 10 feet, officials said.

The Planning Board can recommend to the City Council what to do about this issue, but only the council can enact an ordinance.

The Planning Board meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., in the City Council Chambers of City Hall, 280 Grove St.
