It might happen more often than this, but I remember about 20 years ago when this happened.. they dumped the carcass in the Meadowlands. Stunk for days.

I can't remember where I saw it but I think there is a documentary comming out on PBS or Animal Planet about whales being impaled by large cargo ships. apparently it's a common problem, so sad.

Dead whale removed from Newark ship channel

Friday, October 02, 2009

Authorities say they've removed a dead whale seen floating in the Port of Newark navigation channel between Bayonne and Elizabeth.

LaDonna Davis, a spokeswoman for the Army Corps of Engineers, said one of its vessels towed the carcass of the 40-foot whale to the Caven Point Marine Terminal in Jersey City, where the Environmental Protection Agency will conduct a necropsy.

Officials were unable to immediately identify the type of whale.

Frank Guido, a crane mechanic at the APM Terminals container facility in Elizabeth, said he spotted the whale yesterday morning. The 27-year-old Staten Island resident said it's happened before.

Guido says the carcass was probably dragged into the port area by a cargo vessel.
