Those ads have been around since 2002/2003. The first and second ads a were for Target (the second one was a holiday themed advertisement and to this day there has not been a better one). Since they have been around for a few years now, nobody gets overly excited about them anymore.

I see you've already received an answer. There was a similar advertisement for a Microsoft product a while ago, and I seem to remember a Daybreak (ABC show) advertisement coming out of WTC. These operate on a technology that is probably more accurately described as a zoetrope than a flipbook, but the end result is approximately the same.

The zoetrope at the science museum was always one of the coolest things to me as a kid.

I did not look at the ad to confirm they updated it to Fantastic Four, but there is a moving advertisement between 14th and 23rd Street on the 33rd St bound train that is basically a huge backlit flipbook. Here is a link about the company that does it.

I don't know if I was seeing things or not on the path train, but in Manhattan, somewhere between the christopher and 23rd stations I swear I saw a video clip of the Fantastic 4 trailer OUTSIDE the train, on the wall or something.

It was weird as hell, because on friday night I got a little too drunk in the village, and on my way back to grove st I was leaning against the doors of the train, and all of the sudden out of the corner of my eye I see sparks everywhere and a loud ass grinding noise. I guess the train hit the wall of the tunnel. Freaked the shit out of me.

Anyway, I thought the same thing was happening the next day (except on the opposite side of the train) when I saw a flash of light that looked like it was coming from the walls, but no grinding. Similar to the sparks I saw the night before. But then I realized that I could see the manhattan skyline out the side of the train in the background, and the sparks I thought I saw was actually the silver surfer (from the new movie), and he was flying next to the train. It was crazy.

Then there were some quick flashes of Jessica Alba and the other two dudes and the rock guy from the movie. And then it just said "RISE" in big letters, and then nothing.

I thought I was going crazy for a minute. I looked around and NOBODY saw it. It was so cool. I just don't know how the hell they did that.

A long video screen I guess? Seems a little expensive for something that apparently NO ONE notices. But very cool none the less.

Anyone else seen this thing?

I saw a Path ad today on my way into 33rd st. An SUV suspended from the roof. After it was lowered it took off like a fish. The movie was on the conductors left side.

I held back on replying, because I thought for sure we could all ban together to insist there are no movies, and MarkCore must be hallucinating something.

The technology is based on the zoetrope, which has been around since the 19th century. The company responsible for the ads is Submedia. They used to have one between the 14th and 23rd Street PATH stops, IIRC.

It has been going on for quite a while - more than a year. I think it is now Johnny Walker. There have been auto ads too. Another featured attraction of the PATH starts tomorrow, I think - the Pavoniafeller Center Christmas tree lighting. Look out the leftside when coming from NY, about a minute or two before the Pavonia Newport station you will see a lit Christmas tree. It is there all year but just lit from Thanksgiving to New Year's.
