this was less a parade of ships, and more of a carpool.

at least two of the three navy ships sailed out already. Like a few hours after they came in.

Checking at their website, looks like the ships depart on Tues 5/26. Does anyone know if there's a time frame (like 10-12noon, or a block of time when they do that), or something like that?

'Parade of Ships' takes to Hudson River WednesdayBy It's always an impressive display. Navy ships, patrol boats, Coast Guard cutters and more will make for some camera-worthy views as the annual Parade of Ships takes over the Hudson River for two hours during the annual Fleet Week in New York. This year the parade runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Fleet Week is a tradition celebrating the United States sea services including U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Fleet week in New York will take place Monday through May 26. Various ships will participate in the Parade of Ships including three U.S. Navy ships, four U.S. Naval Academy Patrol boats, and two U.S. Coast Guard cutters. The parade can be seen along the Hudson River, with vantage points in Weehawken, Hoboken, Jersey City, Guttenberg, and all along the waterfront up to the George Washington Bridge, where the ships turn and then return south. This is a real shame. In a country renowned for its military, its largest city seems to be downright ignorant (definitely oblivious) of it. It's a very common, and constant, criticism that NYC (and, by extension, its surrounding metro area) is out of touch with the military, its history, and ill represented among its ranks.

I get the sense NY is no longer the most welcoming of places for US sailors, never mind foreign sailors. I saw a bunch of Japanese sailors a couple of years ago in LSP and everyone was standing around asking - wtf are they doing here...

It was great in previous years when there was a large complement of large ships, but this year seems to be continuing the disappointing trend from last year of having few big ships in New York for fleet week.
Two destroyers and that's about it this year 10 years ago I remember aircraft carriers, submarines, a multitude of destroyers and frigates including foreign vessels from UK, Australia, France. It seems to have dwindled as the years go bye, possibly due to security concerns? Robin.

IMHO, yes, it's worth it. The ships are great and the parade down the Hudson is cool. Learn about the ship's histories and throw in a lesson about thanking our servicemen and women for their sacrifices to make up for the missed day at school!
Don't miss this either: Monday, May 25th ? 11 a.m., Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, Manhattan, New York ? A missing man formation aerial salute comprised of FA-18 Super Hornets based out of Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Va. will be performed in conjunction with the Intrepid Memorial Day Commemoration at Pier 86.

I'm seriously considering taking my kids out of school that day to watch the parade of ships. Is it worth it?
Can I just pick any spot on the Paulus Hook waterfront for a good view? Like in front of the Hyatt hotel?
