Check out Provident Bank. They are all over Jersey City, including Journal Square. They pay over 2% interest on checking and refund all ATM fees, provided you get direct deposit and use your ATM card as a credit card 10 times in a month.

Looks like they have closed the Hoboken and Newark branches as well.

I was wondering if anyone else has petitioned them to re-open JSQ? The sign says to contact: HSBC Licensing Manager, Office of the Comptroller of Currency, Northeastern District Office, 340 Madison Ave, 5th floor, New York NY 10017.

I'm pretty happy with Capital One. They reimburse you the ATM fees if you use another bank's ATMs (up to 6 per month), and I'm pretty sure they also have a free checking account option
