I know a couple people in DT JC whose old houses were built with a shared waste pipe to the street. They also had connecting roof drains. You will need to consult with someone who has done plumbing downtown for a lot of years, and maybe the building department can be of help.
It seems to me that when you bought the property the deed included an easement for that drainpipe, and if the buildings were built that way, any expense required to change it should be a shared expense.
That's my two cents.

I'm renovating the facade of my building, a historic rowhouse downtown, replacing gutters and drainpipe among other work.

Problem is the neighbour's gutter drains into mine and shares my downpipe. Not only does the neighbour have no drain downpipe, but their is no visible connection point for the drain at the ground level of their property, they'd have to dig up their concreted over front-yard area to find/make a main drain line access point at the bottom.

It's obviously been like this for many years; were these houses built with shared drains like this? Even if it wasn't originally this way, is this situation now grandfathered in?

My constructor says it is not supposed to share my drainpipe, and the new gutter he is building for me can't be cojoined to the old gutter on the neighbour's house, he wants to disconnect it all. I don't want to cause problems and expense for the neighbour, but am not sure what best to do.

Am planning to speak to the neighbor about it of course, but wondered what the Jclist wisdom might be?

Robin.

i had a long post written, that disappeared, about how we used Garden State and they sucked.

Question - does anyone have any other recommendations for gutter cleaning/work?

Thanks
JC

Ok. of course right after i post this, i have a bad experience with Garden State Gutter Cleaning.
They were supposed to come last week and they didn't call or show up, so I called them today and left a message saying since no one called or showed up that i wanted to cancel. The guy called me back at work using caller id, not the number i had left with him, and was pretty rude.
I am so sorry that this just happened and i hope if you already called them capn jon that they do not treat you this way. I had never had this problem in the past.

Garden State Gutter Cleaning
http://www.gardenstateguttercleaning.com/
800.508.5044

I just called them today as we had some leaking this morning due to the gutters probably never having been cleaned in the house we bought recently.

They cleaned and eventually replaced the gutters in our old place - it depends on how big the house is i think as to how much it costs.

If you want you can tell them the patton's in JC referred you.

hi everyone,

i'm sure this is somewhere on the list, but i'm lazy.

we have one gutter in back of our house, it's about 2 1/2 stories up, and i can't get to it safely.

i need a gutter guy to get up there, clean it out, and put in one of those things to stop gunk from clogging it.

anyone have any good experiences/recommendations?

thanks in advance!

If you are asking about someone to do your gutters, I recommend Accomplished http://accomplishedchimney.com/

I would also highly recommend gutter covers, such as the rainfall system, so that you don't need to pay to get your gutters cleaned or you rarely need to have them cleaned.

Is your question how to get your deposit back?

If you are looking for a good roofer that will actually show up read this thread. Some JCLISTERS don't have a high opinion of Miller Roofing.

I had mine done by Miller Roofing. I had a lot of trouble getting someone because it was impossible to get a long ladder through my rowhouse. The guy literally had to hang from the roof, but he did a good job. I had been having my gutters cleaned by Ned Stevens and gave them the job - on the scheduled day they backed out.
