Similar convoys are in New York City, too:

That was for an election in the DR?? I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry. I must be missing something from this story - why on Earth would this occur here? I watched it on Grove Street Sunday. The noise level of the music was amazing. Young men were holding these huge boom boxes out on the roof of many of the cars - and they were zipping along pretty fast and came to very quick stops at the red lights. I thought that a few of them would go flying off and out onto the pavement since they were basically 'sitting' and hanging out of the windows. It was really really nuts - you had to see it to believe it! I was confused because I was not familiar with the name either - there was a photo of a man and woman running for office. I did notice a few police officers wave to them from the sidewalk so I guess it was okay(?)

Why do you assume it is not authorized? Did you request to see their papers?

I was coming through the Grove Street area when this was happening. I was trying to figure out who it was so I could be sure to not vote for them. Who knew it was an election in another country! Stange.
It seemed pretty obnoxious. They were blocking traffic and hanging out of car windows so it seemed a bit dangerous too. And I definitely saw JCPD drive by, look over, and keep driving.

Chances are, he is not counting on your vote unless you're from the Dominican. I agree with the previous posters, this is pretty ridiculous. If dude did an unauthorized parade like that in NYC, his ass would be hauled off in a NY minute. But maybe it was authorized in JC, who knows??

Danilo Medina is the presidential candidate for the Dominican Republic election coming up on May 20th. I was in the Heights Sunday and saw a bunch of cars plastered with his posters.
Here's some background: Danilo Medina S?nchez (born November 10, 1951) is a Dominican politician and economist. He was the presidential candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party in the 2000 presidential election, and was defeated by Hip?lito Mej?a. He is again standing as a presidential candidate in the 2012 presidential election. Medina was President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic from 1994 to 1996. He subsequently served as Secretary of State of the Presidency of the Dominican Republic from 1996 to 2000 and again from 2004 to 2006. Wiki Link Danilo Ahead in Polls - ARTICLE

It was up and down Palisade all afternoon Sunday. Music was BLARING. Pretty ridiculous.

I think it was for a guy named Danilo? Don't know what he could have been running for, but there was a convoy of at least 50 vehicles blasting music on Newark Ave yesterday, setting off car alarms, complete with a towed platform with people dancing.
I didn't see any police so I know it wasn't planned with the city. Don't you have to get some kind of authorization for something like this? They weren't running lights and they were being pretty courteous to people crossing the street, so I suppose it could have been all OK, but it seems odd to me that you could amass an army of vehicles to have what seemed like an impromptu parade, and not get any sort of approval from the city for it.
