The police don't enforce laws regarding red lights and stop signs. What good will this new law do?

It's a good idea, but how will an officer know if someone is programming their GPS or adjusting the AC? I am happy that our legislators are being proactive and keep us safe, but maybe the police should start enforcing the driving while distracted laws.

by The Jersey Journal Wednesday June 24, 2009, 12:01 AM Motor vehicle manufacturers made GPS navigation screens available as an option in the early 2000s. Drivers can now buy them for their dashboards. Drivers face a summons if they are caught driving while talking or texting on their cell phones, but Assemblyman L. Harvey Smith of Jersey City and the 31st Legislative District wants to go a step further. Smith wants those owners of GPS devices to stop fiddling with it while at the wheel, according to the Daily Record of Morristown. He has introduced a bill June 8 that allows only voice-activated GPS devices to be programmed while driving. Violators would face the same $100 fine as anyone caught on a cell phone. Is this a good idea, or should lawmakers just leave it to common sense? How much more "while you're driving" legislation can Trenton come up with for consideration? Put a bounty on those fiddling with their CD, MP3 players, or satellite radios. Get rid of those cup holders!
