Jersey City men hit with multiple indictments in Journal Square murder

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
November 29, 2012 at 1:26 PM

Two Jersey City men charged in the murder of a man shot in the head near Hudson County Community College on Journal Square in March have been indicted on multiple counts.

Now 18 years old, Kashawn Q. Fuller, of Wilkinson Avenue, and the alleged triggerman, Christopher D. Erazo, 18, of Suydam Drive in Jersey City, are charged in the March 29 killing of Chad Edgehill, 24, of Fairmount Avenue, officials said.

The indictment was signed on Nov. 20 and made public yesterday.

Fuller was 17 at the time of the killing, but he has been waived up to criminal court.

Security footage shows the victim meeting the gunman and accomplice near the Jackie Robinson statue in front of the PATH station on Journal Square, officials said at the time.

The gunman and victim were ?????then captured on video in the drugstore on the PATH concourse, where Edgehill withdrew money from an ATM, officials said at the time.

The three men then walked toward the community college, and under the covered walkway on the building?s west side was where Edgehill was shot at 9:20 p.m.

An off-duty Port Authority police officer heard the shot and found Edgehill dead with $120 near his hand, officials said at the time.

Edgehill moved to Jersey City from Brooklyn a year before he was killed. He worked as a security guard at New York?s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Officials said Edgehill and the gunman apparently knew each other.

Erazo and Fuller?s bails were set at $500,000 cash only.

The 18-year-old suspect in last week's Journal Square murder in Jersey City has turned himself in, officials said today.
Christopher D. Erazo of Suydam Drive was charged Tuesday in the murder of 24-year-old Chad Edgehill of Jersey City, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
"An attorney made contact with us yesterday to say that (Erazo) would surrender and that came about last night," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said this morning.Full Story.

Authorities believe a 24-year-old man who was fatally shot Thursday in Journal Square died during a pre-arranged meeting with the gunman and an accomplice from New York, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said yesterday.

Chad Edgehill, 24, of Jersey City, was shot once in the back of the head near the entrance of the Hudson County Community College building on Sip Avenue at about 9:20 p.m.

"It does appear there was a meeting that had been scheduled between the victim and other two guys," DeFazio added. "We think the guys (Edgehill) met may have been from New York."

When found, Edgehill who was unarmed had $120 beside his hand on the sidewalk, but no drugs were discovered and no motive has been established, DeFazio said.

"There was some sort of transaction," DeFazio said. "What it was, we don't know but certainly it went very, very wrong."

Meanwhile, friends gathered last night for a prayer service at a church in Brooklyn. Funeral services were scheduled today with the burial to take place at a later date in Grenada.

On the night of the killing, an off-duty Port Authority police officer heard a gunshot and chased the gunman and the accomplice down Sip Avenue and onto Enos Place, where he lost sight of them.

Edgehill recently moved from Brooklyn to Jersey City, where he rented a room on Fairview Avenue, DeFazio said. He worked the midnight shift as a security guard at Lincoln Center for Performing Arts in New York since 2011.

According to Edgehill's Facebook page, he was a former student of Presentation Boys College in Brooklyn and graduated from Medgar Evers College after studying operations management.

Edgehill's father is a resident of Brooklyn, and his mother is currently living in Grenada, DeFazio said.

Police have released an image of the alleged gunman, who was of thin build and 6 feet tall, wearing a red sweater over a red shirt.

The alleged gunman was with a second man described as being about 5-foot-10, thin, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, jeans and a baseball cap with a blue brim, DeFazio said.

Security footage indicates that the victim met the gunman and accomplice near the Jackie Robinson statue in front of the PATH station, and then entered a drug store on the PATH concourse where the victim withdrew money from an ATM, DeFazio said.

The three men then left the store and walked toward the college and under the covered walkway that runs along the west side of the building where Edgehill was shot.

Anyone with information on the murder is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.

Surveillance images showing the suspected gunman in last night's killing on Journal Square in Jersey City have been released.

Authorities hope someone will recognize the man believed to be the one who ended a Lincoln Center security guard's life with a bullet to the back of his head outside Hudson County Community College.

The victim has been identified as Charles Edgehill, 24, of Jersey City, who was killed near the side entrance of the college on Sip Avenue at about 9:20 p.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazion said.

Edgehill was shot to the back of the head, and the bullet exited his forehead, DeFazio said.

"It was a brutal, wanton act of violence," DeFazio said of the death of the man who recently moved to Jersey City from Brooklyn.

After hearing the gunshot, an off-duty Port Authority police officer found the body and chased the gunman and an accomplice down Sip Avenue and onto Enos Place where he lost sight of them, police said.

The surveillance images are from inside a store on the Journal Square Transportation Center concourse. They show the suspect wearing a red sweater over a red shirt that appears to have an image of a cobra on it with lettering above, DeFazio said.

The shirt has long black sleeves.

The suspect iss described as being about 6 feet tall and of thin build, DeFazio said.

He was with a second man described as being about 5 feet 10 inches tall, thin, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, jeans and a baseball cap with a blue brim, DeFazio said.

Investigators think the gunman may have handed his sweater and the gun to his accomplice as they ran, DeFazio said.

Surveillance images from around the area have given authorities a rundown of the events leading to the killing.

Just before the shooting, the victim met the two men near the Jackie Robinson statue in front of the PATH station and security video "indicates there was some familiarity and no apparent tension between the men," DeFazio said.

The shooter and Edgehill then entered a drug store on the PATH concourse and the victim withdrew money from an ATM, DeFazio said.

The three men then left the store and walked toward the back of the college and under the covered walkway that runs along the west side of the school.

There, Edgehill was shot.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Edgehill had $120 beside his hand on the sidewalk, DeFazio said.

The motive for the killing is not clear, although it is possible it was a robbery turned deadly, DeFazio said.

Edgehill had no weapon on him no illegal substances, DeFazio said.

Investigators confirmed the Edgehill had withdrawn money at the ATM but would say only that it was not significantly more than was found at the murder scene.

There were few people in the area at the time of the shooting and the college was on spring break. Class was back in session today.

Anyone with information on the slaying is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.

There are security cams in that walkway... Then again there is a police precinct right there, so I guess having a police presence is pointless.

Authorities still searching for two suspects in fatal shooting of man near Journal Square PATH station

By Terrence T. McDonald

The victim in last night?s fatal shooting outside Hudson County Community College in Jersey City was a 24-year-old male whose identity is still being withheld pending positive identification by his family, according the officials.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said authorities are still looking for two men who were seen fleeing south on Enos Place after the shooting, which occurred at about 9:20 p.m.

A Port Authority police officer heard the shot and started chasing the two men, who eluded capture, DeFazio said.

The shooting occurred at about 9:20 p.m. in the walkway that connects Sip Avenue and the PATH station. The victim was fatally wounded with a ?single shot to the head,? a law-enforcement official said last night.

One of the two men is suspected of being the gunman, and he may have used a semi-automatic pistol, according to DeFazio.

Police scanner reports last night indicated that security cameras at the college and at nearby School 11 may have caught footage of the two men. DeFazio confirmed this morning that authorities are reviewing security footage and may glean some ?valuable footage? from it.

The Jersey City victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:34 p.m., DeFazio added. The man formerly lived in Brooklyn, and he is not believed to be a student of the college.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call the Hudson County Prosuector?s Office?s Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.

By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal

Journal Square was crawling with police last night as authorities investigated a fatal shooting that occurred off Sip Avenue outside Hudson County Community College in Jersey City.

A law-enforcement source said a witness came upon the body between 9 and 10 p.m., and it appeared there had been a single shot to the head.

Last night, the body could be seen on the sidewalk in front of the entrance to the college, in a covered walkway between Sip Avenue and the PATH station.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio confirmed the homicide, and said the male victim had not yet been identified. DeFazio declined to provide additional information, saying the shooting was being investigated by his office and the Jersey City Police Department.

Police scanner reports said two men were seen running down Enos Place away from the college after the shooting. Officers were seen walking down Enos Place using flashlights to search the area.
