I don't know but I vote to rebrand JC as "Trumptown."

I'm only a runner, but I'd help out. Maybe I'll bring a machete on my next run and clear some brush (or maybe running by the jail with a machete is not wise...)

Seriously, one issue might be that the county is nominally in charge of maintaining the greenway segment, but in reality it's a sidewalk along a state highway - so the state actually owns the property. Where there's a gap, things will fall through it.

So I ran this "trail" this morning after reading this thread. The ECG from Lincoln Park (you do have to look for the entrance), at least as far as Kearny, is really nothing more than the sidewalk along 1&9 Truck, which was already there. I can imagine how this was pitched to the county "you get a great photo opp, with ribbon cutting and everything, and you'll have to spend $$Zero to maintain it." At any rate, it's not impassable (for runners).

It's overgrown with weeds on both sides until you get to the Hackensack bridge, but it wouldn't take more than a day with a small crew, weedwackers and trash bags to fix it up.

I didn't get any farther than Talbot Hall (aka the Hudson County slammer) so I can't speak to the Passaic side. Wonder if we could get a crew of nice inmates from the jail to get on a work detail and clean it up?

The view from the top of the bridge as the sun rose over JC and Manhattan was pretty nice. Made up for most of the bother.

I assume it most likely is an oil tank. Although I wonder, were people in the habit of burying other kinds of large metal things in their property?

Yes. While cleaning up the yard in a house we renovated several years ago in Bergen Lafayette, I uncovered a very large, double-basin, enameled cast iron sink. It weighed a couple of hundred lbs and would probably have looked like an oil tank in a sweep.

Keep your fingers crossed.

I say the more people out there the better - running, walking, hoisting medicine balls, doing tai-chi, whatever. Bring 'em on, and the earlier the better.

I came across a pod of PAPD runners this morning on the waterfront in Hoboken, by the soccer field, so apparently their range of habitat has increased.

Don't forget there are two delis on opposite corners of the park, as well as Basic, all open during the market. No-one can stop you from buying a water, or even a 17 oz soda ; ), and having that with your pizza.

I was in the water at the beach on LBI when the 2011 quake hit. That was a very odd feeling - being in water, standing on loose sand, in an earthquake.

Sile and Malms25 (I'm guessing you were both involved in putting on the race on Saturday). Well done again! What a nice day you had for it too. I continue to be impressed with the job you're all doing to make this a fun and exciting event. I couldn't stay very long for the post-race fun but I had a great time anyway. Didn't hurt that I scored a PR in the race, either.

Keep it up.

This is a really nice race. Small field (but growing) and a really fast, flat and scenic course. It should be USATF certified so you can set a genuine 5k PR here as long as it's not too hot out.

I am contemplating doing it for the 3rd year in a row - for my sake I hope they allow walk-up registration.

Get to the terminal lot early. If you roll up at 09:00 you will be out of luck and will have to pay.

There are raccoon all over downtown. Walk around right at dawn and you'll see them all heading home for the day.

Re: home inspector did not get on the roof

Our last inspector was himself a bit old for clambering up on roofs, but he had an assistant who went up and looked at it. It definitely needs to be included in the inspection and the fact that they didn't bring a tall enough ladder is on them, not you. They should have asked you ahead of time about access to the roof and how tall the building was. In our case, they needed to bring a 36 ft extension ladder to get up there - but that was all discussed before they came.

I think you need to insist that they come back before you sign off on the inspection and pay their fee. The roof system is too important and costly to fix not to have it inspected.

From the city website: http://www.cityofjerseycity.com/resident.aspx?id=12218

"During a Snow Emergency:

Residents cannot park on designated snow routes. These emergency routes are main thoroughfares that have to be plowed by the JCIA. On designated Snow Emergency days, residents should utilize side streets for parking "

I think this has been on the website for some time and is posted on the routes. Columbus is a snow emergency route from Center St. to the Hudson River. They actually should have removed all cars and plowed a long time ago."

It still sucks to have your car towed unexpectedly, though.

If you're starting downtown and you want to combine hills and off-road into one run, the route you mention is probably the best bet - although you might have to stretch it a bit over 6 miles. Map it out in gmap-pedometer or mapmyrun and see what you get. If you want hills and are OK with road/sidewalk, then make your way to Paterson Plank road. Run up the viaduct wing road to the 14th st viaduct in Hoboken. From there you can keep going up to Blvd East, using side streets to go down and then back up the hill at various points.

If you want to PM me I can share links to some routes I have mapped out in gmaps.

Re: Dealing with contractors - basic rules
#78

All sound advice. Make sure a big chunk (50% at least for a small job) is payable only on completion and inspection (including city permit inspection if that's involved). You can always buy pizza or sandwiches if the guys are working hard and you feel like it, but it shouldn't be an expectation and I wouldn't start doing that on day 1. Providing water or gatorade is probably more on the mark. Tipping should not be expected.

You should get a written and signed estimate or contract, that spells out exactly what will be done, what triggers payments and what has to be done before the final payment is made.

Me Casa A good Puerto Rican place over near Dixon Mills. BYOB.

My favorites:

La Conguita: It's relatively cheap for DTJC, the mussels appetizer is fantastic. Service is slow but friendly.

Satis: Everything I've had is great.

Skinners: Best burger downtown (IMO), but the entrees can be hit or miss and are expensive.

Kraverie: Two words. Kimchi fries

Fire and Oak: Really just for the steak, something about it just hits the spot for me. Also the Saturday night lobster special is great. Atmosphere is generic chain and the service is meh.

I'll say Hamilton Inn as well. Not because the food is good (only the pub food is even passable), but because of the $1 oysters on wed night.

Park & Sixth for the wine and mussels special on Tuesday nights.

Wait; Hamilton Inn has $1 oysters on Wednesday nights? Used to hang out there when it was the Ale House (edit: Maggie's Ale House, not the more recent one) but haven't been back. I will now.

I'll also second La Conguita, GP's, Roman Nose, Satis and the others. Don't forget the Light Horse. It's a good stand-by for brunch or dinner and the atmosphere is good. Don't think I've ever had a bad meal there.

We used NMZ Construction for a pretty large renovation project in 2011. It's a general contractor that covers all the specialties you'll need in a gut renovation. They were well organized and professional and we were happy with how the work turned out. The owner is Michael Zampetti. www.nmzconstruction.com

Question do you have to have an antenna on the house for this to work? I just recently took down all the nasty crap from my roof a few months ago and would prefer not to put any sort of dish or antenna on the roof.

Not necessarily. If the TV is in a location with clear signal (near a large window for example, you may get good reception with an indoor antenna. It's not too expensive to experiment with. You can also get ones that look sleek and not like your grandparents' old rabbit ears job.

BTW - the result is sure to be at least as good as TV was when you were a kid ;)

It's just an antenna, right? If so, I don't really think it's necessary to order this particular one. You can pick up an antenna which can receive broadcast HD at BB or Target.

Been a while since I tried this myself back in about 2010 but if I remember right I was able to pick up broadcast stations in HD with what was basically a pair of rabbit ears I got for $15 from Target. For sure it's probably not the resolution you can get from fios or cable but it does work.

All good stuff. I like running in Lincoln Park too. If you come from DT and don't mind dodging some traffic to get there, the run up Montgomery to Kennedy Blvd on the way to the park is a great hill.

There really are a lot of good routes around here if you look for them - many with no cars and at least some soft surfaces.

We should get our own JCList forum to keep this discussion going and get out of the main forum!
