Did metered fares go up? Or are cabbies fixing their meters? I regularly take a cab from Grove St. to my apt, well once a week or so. With light traffic, the fare has always been within 50 cents. The last 2 times though it was $1 and $1.25 more with no difference in the route or anything else.

Edited to add... I asked the drivers on both occasions if there was an increase and all I got was a mutter for an answer.

You go to the taxi rank and get a cab ride that costs $.50?! So they then have to go to the back of the taxi rank after dropping you off. That sucks for them.

No, the owner of LITM is Jelynne Jardiniano.

Who gives money to anyone on the street, ever?! I have kindness in my heart - I donate to charity through verified routes.

There's a blind guy (so he purports and I can't confirm) that has recently settled in more often on the Grove Street staircase, asking for cash. People keep giving to him, he keeps showing back up.

Corkage fee is an instant turn-off; it is like a cover charge to me. I'd feel ripped off paying it. Why go there if I can eat elsewhere without having to put down $5 for essentially nothing.

...And where are our Weehawkin stories?!

To add to my earlier stats regarding NYT stories on Jersey City, in the past 3 months they written ~54 stories mentioning "Hoboken".

Oh, and Weehawkin? No stories
Lucky Bayonne? 11 stories

In the past 3 months, the NY Times has done ~28 stories that mention Jersey City.

The Wall Street Journal has done ~114 stories that mention Jersey City.

Just mentioning isn't great evidence of what the stories may be about. I excluded obituaries, items on their events calendar, or sports. It is something though!

The neighborhood needs a little corner shop. Living nearer to Grand as I do, there's nothing around.

It can flood. I only have my new apartment because the place I live at had flooded during Sandy so the tenants previous to me had to leave.

That said, I didn't care. I moved here anyway. I lived in Hamilton Park for a couple years and that's nice enough too.

I recall hearing that it would be a late night place, or even 24/7 diner? I didn't know they deliver, so will give them a chance one day. Thanks for the heads-up.

Maybe they'll be so kind and delivery some stuff from Honshu as well.

Re: Orale Mexican Kitchen

I went to Orale tonight with my sister, her husband, and their 11 month old baby. We all really liked it there.

For a new place I was quite surprised at how well it was run. It was, dare I say, like a normal restaurant. Hostesses were friendly, as was our waiter, who explained the menu since we'd never been there before.

The baby isn't of any real consequence to the story since he was well-behaved. I did call ahead to ask whether it was okay to bring a baby, and the response was, "Yeah, that's perfect!". With that I was more comfortable bringing them and my nephew there.

My sister and I split a small carafe of red sangria, and though it tasted nice, it was just too small for what you pay, so I switched to beer.

We all had a carnitas taco on the recommendation of our waiter and it was really damn good. I'll be craving it later this week I'm sure. They had a chicken taco after and weren't as impressed. They said it was "okay" but I think it just couldn't compare to the previous taco.

We had a chorizo and potato cheese dip that I found to be decent enough, but my sister really loved it.

I had the Dinosaurio (sp) which were short ribs. It was cooked really nicely, moist and soft. It had a nice little chipotle salsa that accompanied it, and found that it just wasn't as good without the salsa. The meat could probably use a more fluid sauce to accompany it, but that's just my own preference. There were hot sauces on the table to use, BTW, so I could have tried those.

The pricing was really fair and I will definitely be back again. If not by my own doing, then I know when my sister visits again she will demand we return there.

The place had a nice atmosphere, friendly staff, really nice food, very good drinks selection, and am very happy that we have this in JC.

Oh, and we didn't get Doritos but the table next to us did. We got normal salted tortillas. Maybe it depends on what you order. I wasn't fussed, the tortillas did the job.

What needs to be redeveloped on Bright Street? I can only think of a few things.

Razing the shopping center and starting over would be nice.

Damn street could use a new layer of asphalt.

Bubby's could use some meat in their food.

Someone should buy out the place on the corner of Bright and Barrow and make it a bodega.

How long does it take to get served there? The times I've gone there has always been someone standing in the doorway for lack of room, so I've given it a miss. Does that line move quickly? Just wondering if I'll suck it up one day and wait.

There was a WSJ article about Jersey City's bookshops the other week, but didn't share it because it is behind a paywall.

As for this story, I know at least one of the authors lives in JC.

Ahh, this is good to know. I don't want to pay for 1 stop on the lightrail to go jogging. If I go to the end of Jersey Ave I should be able to see a way to access the park?

Yeah, caught that after I posted. Maybe my friend's wife will give *some* insight into this area.

EDIT: I do recall from a conversation with her about 8 years ago or so that affluence was their stipulation.

Two people without kids living in Jersey City with two cars is a bit too much. Why even live in JC? The advantage of JC is walkability and public transportation. Why not live in the suburbs if you both prefer to zip around in cars? Especially if you are looking at gated communities like Society Hill. What is the advantage of living in an urban area?

Also, why drive to Gramercy Park in Manhattan? If you live near a Path station, the 14th Street and 23rd Street stations offer really good accesibility to that neighborhood.

Also, if you live near a Path station, the commute by rail to New Brunswick is about 45 minutes, which is the same as the commute by car, or even faster if you account for bad traffic every now and then (which you will encounter). This is, of course, assuming you work in downtown New Brunswick near the train station.

BIG 2nd! I don't get it at all. I live here because of the proximity to my job in Manhattan and that I can get things done without owning a car.

I take the 33rd Street train from Grove Street during rush hour and it's quite nice. I never get a seat, but I almost always get a door to lean on (the handle next to the door, specifically). It is much better than the WTC train which is always squished.

Let me just confirm for everyone that Taqueria is in fact OPEN. Walked by it on the way home from work and was going to stop in, but noticed that there was such a line that a dude was standing in the front door way. People must be souped. I've never eaten there. I'll wait for downtime.

Wow, someone sounds worse than RobinsOak Management! That's impressive.

It seems like such an easy thing to manage building maintenance, I can't understand why the bottom line to them is more important than customer service. They're sh*t at business if they think it is.

My new landlord seems pretty damn good so far, but I've yet to hear of any management company around here being over-the-top good more times than not.

Years ago on the PATH I had a guy that was slowly getting closer to me, backing up towards me, on a train that wasn't overcrowded. Once he got too close I yelled, "Hey man what the hell?!" as a reactionary thing. He moved away quickly. He was definitely up to no good.
