Hey all, I am recently returned to JC after my marriage went pear-shaped. I left in 2006, and since then it has just exploded. I am more of an Iron Monkey rooftop person, but I think he wants more of a view. Anyone with thoughts on this? Thanks.

Exactly!! I see people walking and texting, facebooking, jclisting, & tweeting like idiots.

I seen a dude not too far from my work on Orchard street walk right into another dude while texting and the dude he walked into punch the crap out of him. People just walk around like zombies.

The person you describe above who "punched the crap" out of someone for walking into them is a criminal sociopath who should have been arrested. I would have called the police and given them my account as a witness if I saw something like that.

Dunno man, when I was a kid, my parents always told me to watch where I'm going. After bumping into enough adults and falling on my ass I learned. Pretty much the same lesson here.

Just last night a little girl came running down the aisle in the supermarket and smashed her head into my basket.
Maybe she'll learn but prob not. Likely just turn into one of the "i'm special" kids and "I can do what I want" sh!thead adults.

I had a disturbing experience with a homeless man walking down Newark Ave (Ward E) this afternoon. The person in question from what I can remember, is a 5ft 5" white male, around 60-ish years old with short cropped gray hair. I think his eyes may be blue or grey. He walked right up to my face and asked for spare change. I was deep in thought so didn't notice him until he was right in front of me. I said sorry and tried to walk by, but he wouldn't let me through. I tried dodging left and then right as he followed me at each direction I took, continuously asking for money, so I finally told him to get out of my way. He then turned belligerent and started cursing at me. I was finally able to walk past him as he continued to curse and then actually spat at me. Luckily I was a safe range away from his spit. I was afraid at first when he wouldn't let me walk past him. He was so close and aggressive that I thought he was going to grab me at any moment.

Not sure if anyone else has experienced something similar with this homeless person or others. There are usually homeless people hanging around Newark Ave and I have wondered before if they were ever aggressive. This proves to me that safety may indeed be an issue.

Clearly a scary experience. Never hesitate to call the police. I have the non-emergency # programmed in my phone 201-547-5477. Pretty east to remember as well. Use the camera on the smart phone whenever you can.

Yet, we are back to case where people don't want to be responsible pet owners and make rules as they see fit. If your off leash dog charges my dog, if your dog is hurt as a result it is absolutely your own fault.
1. You dog should be on a leash
2. If you are going to irresponsible, you need to have vocal control of your dog. Good luck with that most of that time in Jersey City.

Why shouldn't a dog I am working with be able to take a walk in a park? I'm certified dog trainer and I will walk my leashed dog on whatever public property I desire and I will never jeopardize other dogs because I like to let Fluffy run free.

I love how there is an expectation of non aggression with social dogs. I can't tell you how many times off leashed "social" dogs have had fights with others and the owners absolutely can't control the situation. I have actually broken up dog fights in the park because the owners could not.

Then had the owner parent yell at you for grabbing the dog child quickly and probably roughly because you knew what might happen.

Yeah that happens a lot and its completely unacceptable. I cant be the only person this has happened to considering the trained responses these individuals seem to have.

Why would anyone bring a dog with aggressive behaviors to a park, leashed or otherwise?

So you're saying women are akin to seniors and children?

Just kidding. I see chicks on oversized mountain bikes zig-zaging down the Grove St sidewalk like a 5 year old all the time. It's endearing.

Quote:

bodhipooh wrote:
Actually, protected lanes have their own issues. And, depending on whose view, or study, you follow, or believe, they could be as dangerous, or more so.

Protected bike lanes can exacerbate one particular dangerous situation: the crossing of intersections and cross streets. When a cyclist approaches a cross street, or intersection, a car turning into the cyclist will not see him until he is at the point of impact, because the cyclist is likely "hidden" by cars.

Additionally, protected bike lanes lull riders into a false sense of security, which leads to riders being less alert. Several studies back this one up: more women, seniors and children take up bike riding when protected bike lanes are present. The problem is that while riders will be "safer" from moving traffic, they are not necessarily safer from either of the following: inattentive drivers (or, passengers) who are parked and may open a door onto the cyclist's path, or from pedestrians who decide to jump onto the bike lane without first making sure a bike is not traveling on said lane. These last two are particularly bad when there is no "road sharing culture" or "bike awareness". I think we can all agree that neither is prevalent here in JC, or even regionally.

I have been "doored" on several occasions in Manhattan, with MANY near misses, and have had a TON of close encounters with pedestrians who are SO oblivious to their surroundings that they have actually walked into my path as I am about to reach them.

I don't have an answer. I do think that protected lanes have some benefits, but I don't think they are the panacea that some wish or advertise.

Yes, this!
I don't know why but it drives me crazy to see dogs walking their owners.

Most dog owners don't have the first clue on how to properly train and control their dogs. First clue is to see how they walk them. Every time I see a dog ON leash that walks 6-10 feet ahead of their owner, it makes me laugh because I already know they're a piker who knows nothing about dog ownership and proper training. The dog owns them!

I'm more bothered on behalf of the dogs that are off-leash than anything else. These owners are just asking for their dogs to be bitten by other dogs, hit by cars, lost, etc.

The amount of potentially bad things you're exposing your dog to is far greater than whatever benefit you think you might be providing your dog by letting him off-leash. Sometimes I think people let their dogs off-leash more for their own egos than for the benefit of the dog.

Anyway, be smart, curb your dog, and get it fixed!

Again JCParent, do so at your discretion, but don't be surprised to receive a ticket when enforcement ramps up.

And as I said earlier, again, this is not an anti dog argument, it's a pro-responsible dog ownership argument, which you fail to grasp.

Residents are fully willing to share the parks - but keep your dogs on leash (as per the LAW), clean up after them and all will be good.

Also as I said earlier, it's not people like me that are ruining it for you. The people who are violating the leash laws are ruining it for you, and it is your responsibility as a responsible dog owner to help improve the situation.

what a topic!

As a dog owner and a resident near the Morris Canal park my main point is that there is no longer a dog park in Paulus hook. There used to be one but they removed it for the new walkway.

I personally keep my dog on a leash in morris canal park, but I don't have a problem if early/late visitors want to take their dog off leash to let them run for a few minutes. But I do have an issue when the park gets full. If people are lounging or playing with their kids, your dog shouldn't be running around near them off leash.

As a note, Morris Canal park is a state park. Jersey City Police are out of their jurisdiction. If you have an issue there, you need to call the Liberty State Park police.

I agree that calling animal control is petty IF you are seeing this out your window. But if you are in the park, dog owners should be more respectful.

By the same token, dog owners should feel free to call the police on the rampant open container law violations taking place in the same park, no?

JCParentingUnit, that's great feedback and yes, you should definitely call in violators of the open container law.

But to your other point, it's not important if you're ok with the occasional dog off leash; it's against the law. Period. No ambiguity here.

And you're right about it being state property. As I mentioned earlier, the neighborhood council as well as our Ward councilwoman, are working to convert the land to JC property. Either way, the core point still stands: stop letting your dogs off leash and clean up after them.

As to the dog run - there are two dog runs within walking distance of Paulus Hook. I referenced them earlier. If you can't walk 10-15 minutes to a dog park, I really don't have an answer for you on that. But, clearly, the PH residents don't care and will have to be ticketed to get the message.

Speeding is against the law, but no one is saying everyone driving 56 MPH should get a ticket. If you are not harming anyone, then who cares? Should we take pictures of the people smoking joints in the park and post them online as well? What about the people who park their cars near Morris Canal park and don't visit the memorial? Let's be humans and all just be considerate for one another.

The run next to the beer garten is not a run, it's a cage. The run in Van Worst is not 10-15 minutes from PH. PH needs a dog park and it should be at Morris Canal park or up at the corner of Washington and Grand. There is plenty of space in both places.

Certainly. I agree everyone needs to be considerate of one another.

Everyone accepts a risk when they break the law by jay-walking, turning right on red, passing an ice-cream truck, playing music too loudly, letting their dog off a leash, pumping your own gas, or passing without honking (http://www.dumblaws.com/law/1293). However, turning in your neighbors because "It's the law period." is gestapo tactics and very un-american.

Actually, it more closely resembles McCarthyism.

I kind of agree with this. It's not like she's heading up the planning department. She'll be scheduling meetings.

I understand it looks bad, but nepotism is a problem when people wind up in positions of influence with no idea what they are doing. When it results is someone answering phones and scheduling meetings for $15k a year it just doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

I'd say an increase, yes. I've been here for 9 years and have definitely seen a jump over the last couple. It used to be a few people in front of A-1 or McDonald's asking for change. Now there's an assortment of characters scattered throughout the park, the residential side streets on on stoops, and just wandering around downtown. Now they're mobile and in some cases, aggressive.

When you've got a 3yr old playing at Van Vorst and a bunch of homeless folks drinking a few feet away, or passed out in the gazebo, or in the case of a few weeks ago, having to step over human feces, it's definitely an increase compared to a few years ago.

I can't speak on Jrnl Sq.

Maybe there are more, but they are moving around more, or moved off my usual paths, so I don't notice them?

I know for years I couldn't walk past the McDonald's at Grove without getting swarmed, and Hamilton Park was a big hangout; now I don't see much in either place.
