True! Teak also puts out a good product. Good sushi and entree selection, albeit a little too loud sometimes.

According to bill, in post #4, their sushi is really good. I may just stop in to check it out, as sushi is one of my favorite things when dining out (mostly because I find that interesting, varied rolls are not easy to make at home yourself.)

In general, I find that my FiOS, when my computer is hard wired into the router, performs at the advertised speeds. Every now and then (and, by that I mean once every other month) I have to reboot the router to solve slowness / connectivity issues.
The issues I have with my FiOS router are 99% of the time related to WiFi performance, and I am pretty certain that is due to a combination of the cell phone towers installed on our building and, of course, the multiple other WiFi routers in use by neighbors.

Geolocation is not used by DNS servers, but rather ADNS servers for specific domains. In essence, geolocation can and will be considered in specific scenarios (I usually work on this on a regular basis for clients in the tri-state area) and it is used as part of something called GSLB (Global Server Load Balancing). You are correct in that this is often used when serving up content (so, CDN servers are a perfect example, as is the case of distributed data centers). Geolocation can be leveraged to respond back with an IP address that is, theoretically, closer to you. The problem is that the ADNS server receiving the request is only able to see the address of the forwarding DNS server. The assumption (a bad one, actually) is that the forwarding DNS server is close to your physical location. When you choose to use a DNS server other than the one assigned by your ISP, you risk being "seen" from a location far from you (in the case of forwarded requests, not when browsing directly to a site). As such, you might end up streaming content from a server that may not be as cose to you as it could be.
The perfect example to illustrate the point above is the scenario of national ISPs who may operate all over the US and which may be using a DNS server located far away (say, you are in NJ, but the ISP may be using servers located in California). In that scenario, your forwarded DNS request may look to be coming from California, even though you are located in NJ. Anyway, even when you take that into consideration, the DNS functionality is not at all responsible for poor network performance. The most important factors in network performance are the underlying quality of the network path itself, any network traffic management taking place, and the actual quality of the network at either end. In theory, even if you are streaming from a far away server, if the network pipe is big enough, you should be OK. If you are experiencing bad performance, do what you can to fix things on your end of things, because the rest is completely out of your hands.

That is simply incorrect. DNS servers do NOT determine which path to take. That is determined by predefined "routes" on the switching equipment "upstream" from you. You are confusing two completely different utilities. A traceroute (tracert in Windows, traceroute in the Unix/Mac world) is a way to see how packets are traversing the network on its way to the final destination. The ONLY thing that DNS does is resolve a hostname (e.g. cnn.com) to an IP address (e.g. 157.166.226.26). Different DNS servers may return different IP addresses if multiple such addresses are assigned to the same record (meaning, a given hostname could be defined as having multiple addresses, just like some hostname are often dynamically resolved to an address based on certain logic/parameters.) In any case, I will say it again DNS had NO BEARING whatsoever on network performance.

I am located in a building where cell phone signal antennas/repeaters were recently installed (in the past year, or so) and performance of all wireless signals has degraded tremendously. Whereas my WiFi could easily provide a reliable 20+ Mbps throughput in the past, I am lucky to get half that now. In fact, sometimes it drops down to 5 Mbps. If I connect to the router using a cable, performance is normal (20+) which shows the issue is with interference of the WiFi signals. Of course, changing channels is just a temporary solutions, as most devices nowadays will automatically switch channels on their own, so the channel with little traffic today, may be overwhelmed tomorrow.

There is absolutely no correlation between broadband bandwidth performance and DNS resolution. The article makes no mention of DNS, and it wouldn't, as that has nothing to do with throttling.
Unless Verizon is purposely performing a "Man in the Middle" attack on Netflix servers, there is no way that DNS will have any sort of impact.

If you heard it on WNYC (NPR) you might be getting confused with the huge water main break that happened today in Manhattan in the West Village, around 13th Street and 6th Avenue. They have been reporting it all morning, as it has caused massive delays in the subway system and they just reported that the break has resulted in a huge crater that could fit a small school bus.

You didn't mention where you live. If you are at all close to LSP, I highly recommend it. It is a fun, scenic place, albeit flat. You will find many people running, at all times. I usually run the park in the mornings, with my Weimaraner so, if you see me, wave. :)
A friend of mine that lives in the neighborhood mentioned that there is a fun running group that meets on Tuesdays and usually ends their evening runs at The Tilted Kilt. I will try and get the information from him so I can post it here. About LSP, it is also rather nice that, due to its layout, it is incredibly easy to measure distances, which I find to be a huge plus when training for specific distances.

Not sure what to tell you, though. Some people have suggested soundproofing solutions and contractors, and a search through the site should yield some results. Good luck. I work from home often, but my place is rather quiet and I normally have music in the background when concentrating.

I am going through a similar process.
Quite honestly, I must echo the comments made by others. The 440 dealerships are just terrible. I visited the Jersey City Ford dealership and it was atrocious. Not very professional, not at all clean, and not what I was hoping for. I visited the Ford dealership in Summit and it was a completely opposite experience: professional staff, super clean facilities and much more pleasant. As Brewster mentioned your best bet is the Costco Auto program. They already have pre negotiated prices with dealerships and there is no haggling or negotiating. It is by far the best price you will find, without a doubt. I have now gone through them twice (a motorcycle and a car) and have nothing but great things to say about the program and the process. If you are not a Costco member, it would be worth it to join just for this.

Uber is SUPER convenient and, as pointed out, you usually get great service along with the convenience of not having to exchange money. I have used it a couple of times. Definitely more affordable and convenient than regular JC taxis.
But, there is one drawback to Uber cars: if you are in a hurry, or if you are just coming out of the PATH and just want to go home right away, you will find that sometimes there is a wait period (usually less than 10 minutes) before a car can come to you. If you are home, or at a restaurant, that is no problem. If you are outside, in the cold or rain, or in a hurry to get where you are going, it could be a drag to have to wait for the car. Regardless, I think Uber is awesome. You can use my referral link to get $20 off your first ride (https://uber.com/invite/6kv37). FULL DISCLOSURE: if you sign up using the link above I also get a $20 credit on my account. So, you get $20, and I get $20.

Therein lies a HUGE problem for high cost states: as more and more retirees flock to states with lower costs (and, usually, more temperate climates) they are also losing out on the money that retirees will normally spend locally. Even retirees living on fixed incomes will spend money locally for many things, and that is a HUGE loss.
The population "migration" trends are quite clear. Texas and Florida are experiencing huge growths, driven in large part by retirees. But, also young people, who in today's world are able to ply their trade from just about anywhere, thanks to the Internet and improved telecommunications infrastructure. What will NJ look like 20 years from now? Or, 30? I suspect more and more people will flock to medium size metro areas (which is already happening) and many more businesses will continue to relocate certain operations to these small and mid-sized metro areas. I know many of my clients have already undertaken projects aimed to achieve just that.

I have to agree with Monroe, and also thought the same thing: I have a feeling that part of the rabid opposition to the new medallion auction was about the increased competition that would force drivers to be more professional/honest.
About Hoboken cabs, I have to agree that if "forced" outside city limits, the cab should be free to negotiate a fare with his passenger. I would welcome a "zone" system that stipulates fares within JC city limits in lieu of running the meter, when mutually agreed upon. The current system is a total racket.

I positively despise JC cabs. They are usually in really bad condition, including terrible smell, and with the sole exception of one cabbie last week, they ALWAYS try to run off meter. I have had many an argument with cabbies about the meter (I always refuse to pay their inflated quotes and insist on the meter running). Surprisingly, came home late last week, walked out of the Grove Street PATH into a waiting cab, and the driver politely asked for my destination and immediately turned on the meter. My best experience yet. No hassle and professional. My assumption was that perhaps they are now starting to crack down on the cabs, but perhaps that is just wishful thinking.

Don't lump me with the crazy drivers that also rationalize their antics and lack of regard for others. I am a cyclist, and get around by bicycle year-round. I am also a motorcyclist, but I am mindful to not be a LOUD, annoying one. And, I am also a driver, but I only do about 4,000 miles per year.
What I said, I did as a cyclist that is mindful of his place and surroundings. Yes, I am constantly appalled by the crazy, aggressive drivers (you will find many posts of mine deploring that) but that doesn't entitle me to break the law and be a douche that rides on the sidewalks. I try to share the lane when it is safe to do so, and when it isn't, I take the whole lane and let the bastards behind me get riled up. I have been sideswiped by cars in NYC and JC, doored three times in NYC, have collided with clueless pedestrians (mostly tourists) all over NYC that choose to walk on bike lanes, or cross the streets without looking to see who is coming, or jump into the streets from in between cars. The point is that we HAVE to share the roads, and us being on the sidewalks will only lead to more confusion and lead to more chaos.

Very true. In fact, many of the TX metro areas are experiencing tremendous growth partly because of people fleeing the expensive NE. Wide open spaces, no personal income taxes, small government and very affordable housing stock. And, to the point someone else raised about healthcare that specializes on senior/elderly matters, many of these TX cities have invested heavily on those fields.
Personally, I want to retire in TX when the time comes. But, OR would be a close second choice. There's a certain allure to both states: rugged American landscapes with lots of character and possibilities. Quote:

According to what you copy/pasted, it IS lawful to use rock salt. Rock salt WILL cause discomfort to dogs. It can cause inflammation and even dermatitis. If you are worried about your pooch, you can buy different products to protect his paws. I use special plastic footies that look like balloons. They are easy to put on and you can reuse them.

I have to agree with Monroe: people are being selfish and thinking about themselves.
There is absolutely no excuse to ride on a sidewalk. If the roads conditions do not allow for safe riding, dismount and walk your bike. Those trying to justify their doing so are simply rationalizing their disregard for the law. It's that simple.

Apparently, soupydumplings feels he is entitled to the spot he has left after clearing out his way. Some parts of the country (Southie, Philly and even Pittsburgh) have long, storied pasts of parking wars related to spots cleared after a storm. Heck, from what I have read, some people have been on the wrong end of a beating for daring to occupy a spot cleared by someone else.
Here is a related article from the NYT: Snowstorm Parking Wars

I tried this place the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Based on all the reviews, I was a bit hesitant about what to expect. It was fairly empty, but I was by myself, so I grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly, in a non-intrusive way.
Much to my delight, my burger was simply perfect. I chose the Tar Heel burger, with an add-on of onion rings. I particularly liked that I could add on the onion rings without having to order an entire side just for me. The meat came out just as I ordered it (medium) and the combination of flavors mixed perfectly. I was really satisfied. Two beers, and one Tar Heel burger with the onion rings, came out to about 20 bucks. Very reasonable for the product, presentation, ambiance and service. I'll be back.

A leased school bus ferrying passengers on non-school business is not covered by the same statutes or laws.
