Jersey City parking agency set to be dissolved
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal The Jersey City Parking Authority, a 64-year-old autonomous agency that enforces the city?s parking rules, is on its way out, Mayor Steve Fulop announced this week. Jersey City is set to hire high-powered law firm Weiner Lesniak to probe the operations of the JCPA, the first step the city must take to dissolve the much-maligned agency. Fulop wants to fold parking enforcement duties into the new public-safety department. READ MORE

State officials may review Jersey City after reports of 911 problems
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal The state office that oversees 911 call centers may investigate Jersey City thanks to a story in yesterday?s edition of The Jersey Journal that detailed problems callers have had reaching city 911 operators. State regulations require all 911 calls be picked up within 10 seconds, or 20 seconds during heavy call periods. But callers have reported to The Jersey Journal that they have waited so long for 911 operators to pick up that sometimes they just hang up and wait for operators to call them back. READ MORE

Jersey City to shake up 911 dispatching system after complaints no one picks up
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal Jersey City says it plans to make changes to its 911 dispatching system after hearing complaints that calls to 911 can result in up to 30 rings before an operator answers. The problem surfaced again in April when witnesses tried to report a pedestrian being struck and killed at Kennedy Boulevard and Fairmount Avenue. READ MORE

Jersey City schools chief creating new inner circle at district
By Terrence T. McDonald/The Jersey Journal One year after she was hired to run the state?s second largest public-school district, Schools Superintendent Marcia V. Lyles is ramping up her efforts to make her mark on Jersey City schools, most recently with the hiring of a chief academic officer. The position, a new one for the 29,000-student district, will be filled by Jason Bing Schetelick, at an annual salary of $170,700, thanks to a nearly unanimous vote at the Aug. 27 Board of Education meeting. Schetelick, who resigned abruptly in July as Bloomfield?s schools superintendent, becomes the latest member of Lyles? widening inner circle at the BOE?s central office on West Side Avenue. READ MORE

Listen: 911 calls reveal details of April 19 fatal crash involving Jersey City cop
The Jersey City cop who struck and killed a pedestrian on Kennedy Boulevard in April refused to give a 911 operator his name in the minutes following the fatal crash, newly released tapes reveal. Michael Spolizino -- who was indicted on Aug. 6 on charges of aggravated manslaughter, death by auto and leaving the scene of an accident -- is tentative on the roughly minute-long call, one of at least 10 made to 911 that night. ?I just struck, I struck a male on Kennedy Boulevard,? Spolizino says in the call, which came in on Friday, April 19 at 10:06 p.m. He adds later: ?The male, just, he came out?? before emitting what sounds like a frustrated sigh. When the dispatcher asks for his name, Spolizino says, ?Um, I don?t want to give it right now. Read more

The voting machines do have these counters. Those #s weren't on the unofficial election tally I have, so I don't know them, but county election folks do. The clerk has assured me, in no uncertain terms, that there aren't enough provisionals to get Watterman (the leading vote-getter in the at-large race) over the threshold that would bring in the other two top finishers. He may be certifying the results today, so I may post something later confirming the final numbers.

I come on here occasionally if I know the answer to a question someone asks, and because JC List posters are good about linking to my paper's stories. Voters can register up until Tuesday, 5/21 for the runoff. The City Clerk will be open until 9 p.m. and you can also register with the County Clerk. Every candidate starts with 0, otherwise they could get two votes from the same voter.

That's correct. The formula is derived from the number of people who vote in the at-large race, whether they vote for one or all three.

Sorry, I tried to do it as clearly as possible. But I couldn't do it with a formula, so maybe this will help:
Total # of people who voted in the at large race DIVIDED by two PLUS one = the number that the highest vote-getter in the at-large race has to get to avoid a runoff. Not everyone has to achieve that threshold, just the highest vote-getter.

Certified: Boggiano; Councilwoman Nidia Lopez; Healy's candidate, Janet Chevrez; and Imtiaz Syed, who ran in the 2011 special election.
Adela Rohena, a one-on-one teacher's aide who is running with Jerry Walker, submitted petitions yesterday but has not been certified yet. No one else filed petitions to run, so it will be that first group and possibly Rohena.
