Re: Carbon Monoxide Saftey - Do You Have a CO Detector?

A cigarette will work too, according to this site:

How To Test a Carbon Monoxide Detector

(Don't some of those warnings on cigarette packs say the smoke contains carbon monoxide?)

And there are also test kits that contain vials of CO with a plastic bag that you can put your detector into to check them. If you have a detector that has a digital readout of the levels then the cigarette test should work fine, but if it's just one of those combo smoke alarms then the levels from a cig may not be high enough to set it off. The firemen that were here said mine with the readout was definitely the one to have.

[EDIT]
This is the one I have BTW:

Just a reminder to everyone how important a CO detector is. Mine just went off, I reset it, it went off again, so I called 911. Elevated levels throughout the whole building. Please don't think it can't happen to you. We now have to get a chimney person out here to check things out, until then no hot water. BOO!! But everyone is safe thankfully. Please, let's not see another story on the news about deaths from CO poisoning.

Wow. Someone told me about this comment and I just couldn't believe it until I came on here to see for myself. I'm shocked, but with all the complaints I suppose I shouldn't be.

Sure, you only got about $10 from me each month so the loss of my business will mean nothing to you, but I certainly won't eat there again.

Still, amazing to see business owners show so much hatred for their customers, no matter what one anonymous internet poster may have had to say about them.

@Kitcat and @Fraulein, you're very welcome. I hope it helped you, even if just a little bit. I use New York (The Battery) under the New York Harbor section at the top of the page when I look at it, since I'm in Paulus Hook.

The picture of the cop car is priceless, although after reading the story it seems they were parked there diverting traffic when the waters came up instead of actually driving into it. Still, priceless.

High tide for the downtown area has already come and gone this morning. Some of you may have already experienced problems--I had a very minor backup into the bathtub. BUT, there is another high tide tonight around 9:30 so please be prepared because with the rain that has fallen, and with the rain that is forecast, it could be bad tonight.

Tide Charts

I keep an eye on this during times of heavy rains. Over the past few years I'v figured out this will give me a better indication of flooding than the amount of rain coming down.

Hoping for the best for everyone (my bathtub water has already begun to recede.)

We had water pouring out of our toilet on the ground floor. Probably 4-6 inches, most of it able to be contained in the bathroom at least. Definitely the worst I've seen in the past three years as far as backflow goes. We had more water in the whole apartment back in March '10 but most all of that was ground water coming up through the foundation, not sewage backup. I think this was a combination of the high tide and a massive amount of water in a short period of time (about 2 inches within an hour.) Been working on cleanup with gloves and bleach ever since. Best of luck to everyone with the next time

Same owner from the past 2 years, just renovations. The owner is not the same person who originally opened "Star Bar" about 4 years ago. But the original owner stipulated that the name must remain (for a couple of years. No idea the reasoning behind it either.)

Friendly staff, friendly people, great beers that usually change quite often, depending on what's in season and available. It definitely attracts, and will still attract, a gay clientele. It is NOT being un-gayed, whatever that means. (No offense to you CatDog whatsoever.)

The main thing I don't like about the name "Pint" is that they do not actually serve pints. Go figure. But I still go there quite often. The "clearing the cooler" sale this past Saturday was great, from what I remember of it.

See you there on Friday!

Unfortunately nextpath is no good when you're at WTC and trying to figure out whether the Hoboken or Newark train will be the first to leave (going to Exchange Place.) It simply says the next train will be leaving in X minutes, not which train.

I've found nynj to be accurate during the day, it's just a crap shoot to figure out what time the train conductors have their watches set to. The monitors in the stations are always off (and by off I mean using time.gov atomic clock as the 'correct' time.) On the weekends if I am taking a train from Exchange Place into the city I always make sure I'm there at least three minutes before the 'scheduled' time. I can't speak to the accuracy during late night however.

I've bookmarked the particular WTC-to-EXC page on nynj on my phone's homescreen so at the touch of a button it open and tells me what I need to know. Though at this point I've basically memorized the schedules from there during the evening commute. (After around 6:30 the Newark trains are on the 2's, and the Hoboken trains leave every 12 minutes starting at :03, so :15, :27, :39, :51. If you miss the :51 the next TWO trains will be leaving from the Newark side, so I can understand how pissed people can get when they don't know the schedule from there.)

A few weeks ago I walked by this corner and noticed the doors were open (it's in the new high rise) and saw what looked to be a long bar with lots of construction going on. Just yesterday I passed by and saw there were signs up for Cityside Bistro, and spying between the paper in the windows it looks as if it is ready to open any day now. Anyone know any details?

I haven't heard of many people that don't like Presto's, so let me be the first. We tried it about three years ago and have never been back. It was like pasta soup the sauce was so watery.

Though, to be fair, with all the rave reviews posted here over the years we should definitely try it again.

Recommendations?? What's your favorite dish there?

The place is very large. They have a lot of groceries, refrigerated and frozen foods, organic foods, fresh produce, etc. The prices are what I would call 'reasonable'. They have hot and cold prepared foods, sandwiches, cakes, pastries, a small hot bar, a salad bar (you tell them what toppings you want), heat-up-at-home foods. There is seating in the windows along Grand Street. Everyone is very, very friendly. A super-easy place to stop on the way home after work. They're open until 10 during the week, and I think 8 on the weekends.

It seems pretty ambitious but I certainly wish them well. They certainly have my business.

Welcome to Paulus Hook!

I would first check at Downtown Hardware on Newark near Grove St. It's possible but not likely they have it, but I always check there first if I have to go to .....

Home Depot. Downtown. Or even HD or Lowe's on 440. That would be my best guess for finding what you need. (Target too? They have an outdoor section in the back corner but it may be too seasonal for them to still have it out if they carried it. Outdoors=summer, although the chimneas you would think would be a year-round thing if they have them.)

I tried finding regular firewood for my fireplaces a few years ago and finally gave up and just resorted to carrying it by the bundle from a deli near the train in the city. I haven't looked into the chimneas very much. You can use some versions for cooking, right? Like an oven?

I noticed they posted the schedule of movies for their '80s weekend, but I also noticed this:

A message for our patrons:
There has been a change in our schedule of films celebrating the 1980s, and as a result, the movie "Scarface" is no longer part of the line-up.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

The posted schedule isn't bad though:

Fri, Jun 4, 2010
8:00 pm Raging Bull
Sat, Jun 5, 2010
6:00 pm Pee-wee's Big Adventure
Sat, Jun 5, 2010
8:15 pm Blues Brothers

(I was hoping for a more "80s" movie--Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Goonies, Lost Boys? SOMETHING with a Corey )

I have no clue what this heavier/lighter comment is all about? Aside from the taste, I don't see much physical difference between the 'old' pizza and the 'new'.

But, the taste. HUGE difference. We have to stop ourselves from buying this pizza every night. It is TOO GOOD!

The website again:

http://www.paulushookbrickoven.com/

I'm thrilled that the building owner is running this place now, ensuring it will be around for years to come.

You mean we live in a free market economy? Rents go up? There's competition? People are in business to make money?? NO!! SAY IT ISN'T SO!!

But yes, I completely agree, it sucks for La Rustique. But I always hated that they would handle money, handle the phone, and then pick up the bread with their bare hands so I'm glad they are gone.

It looks to be the same as the wine store there on the corner of Washington and Morris, Liberty Wine and Deli. Looks like he owns that whole corner there (Mr. Lee is his name, I think?) It's definitely connected because when I went to grab some beer you could see right into the pizza shop, though you can't go through that way.

But again, seriously, the pizza was amazing, and they sell by the slice.

"Fresh Groceries Coming Soon" at 77 Hudson?

Just can't stay away

We walked down the block to check out 77 Hudson, they've opened up Sussex Street again both lanes between Hudson and Greene. (I've noticed people are living in the rental tower already). On the northwest corner of the complex, facing Hudson Street, there are large generic signs in the windows stating "Fresh Groceries Coming Soon" over pictures of food. Peeked in and the place looked rather large, (though it is full of junk right now).

Wanted to pass along what I saw, and wondered if anyone knows anything else???

My friend says it's "because it's racist" but I'm not sure if that's the reason it bothers me, or if it really is racist. Thoughts?

Tomatoes, onions, lemons. In short, PRODUCE! This store is something Paulus Hook desperately needed. Before, the closest place to get produce was Grove Street, or Shop Rite. Or even Manhattan--I've made it to Whole Foods and back in Tribeca in less than an hour. They were beginning to stock the freezers today. The produce is fresh. The only thing missing is fresh meat and fish, but no complaints here for sure. My hope is that they maintain their hours (currently until 10 mon-sat, 9 on sunday).

The PATH train closure is really going to hurt those of us that are already here, too. I can get to Whole Foods in Tribeca, round trip, in under an hour. It's massive, and on the weekends practically empty, and is a big reason why I've resisted buying a car.

Think about it for a second..... you put out paper to be recycled in a PLASTIC bag.

Seriously, if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears. I can't really put the stuff in a brown paper bag because my experience has been the recycling guys won't take anything in which they can't readily see the contents. Hence, I put all my bottles and cans in a clear plastic bag - which they take every week, no problems. I can't put shredded paper in an open waste container, because the slightest breeze will just blow the stuff all over the street and sidewalk.

For my shredded paper I put it in a paper bag, and then put it in the larger bin with the rest of the paper. Otherwise, as you said, it will just go everywhere.

I know about the plastic bag rule (recycling should be placed in containers, not plastic bags) but every recycling day I see a LOT of recycling tied up in clear or blue plastic bags. It always seems to be picked up though, or at least taken back inside the house by the next morning.

Oh yeah, the pizza gets so cold so quickly. I guess there's just not much to hold the heat in those paper thin slices. You're best bet is to eat it at the restaurant if you want to see just how good it is. The first slice when our pie was brought to the table was fantastic, but within minutes it was very cold and not so good.

Also, there is an outrageous handicap barrier.

Those who need it can take the elevator from the platform to the turnstyle level. It leaves them at the faaaaaar end of that level from the new exit. But that is not the real barrier.

There is a set of 10 to 15 steps (estimated from memory) up to the level where the escalators run to the street. This barrier is aggravated by a stupid sign, as you approach the stairs, that says, Elevator to Street > (wheelchair and right arrow).

If you take that arrow literally - which is what well thought out signs are supposed to allow - you will walk right into the solid concrete wall that is about 10 feet to the right of the sign. There is no elevator at that point.

The arrow - to be correct - should be ^ (up - meaning up those stairs) which is where that elevator is.

Obviously there was no handicapped person with a voice in planning - or at the very least, someone who understands that handicap access requires a coherently barrier free route. A barrier part way along a route is the same as non-handicap access for the *entire* route.

Doesn't ADA have any influence here? .

I was totally confused by this as well. I kept seeing the signs and then all I saw were stairs, and then finally saw the elevator up the stairs. BUT, there is a rather long ramp that leads up to the level where the elevator is. Mind you it isn't near the elevator and the signs are very misleading but the ramp is there.

My hope is that as the week goes on and people get used to the new setup things will get better though.
