Robotjustin, I am fairly certain that the Taqueria is cooking Northern Mexican food, which is a little different from Californian- Mexican or most Mexican food Americans are used to eating. And having driven from Austin to Mexico City (and eating along the way at extremely non-touristy roadside stands) I can testify that there is no guacamole in Northern Mexico. It's all about the tortillas, beans, cheese and machaca.

Long live the Taqueria!

The pho at Nha Trang is my miracle hangover cure. Actually, any kind of illness cure now that I think about it. And great for icky, rainy days.

I've never ever had a problem there. Love the food! I'm getting hungry just thinking about that machaca burrito. As for ambience, there isn't much. I liken it to hanging out in my friend's basement during middle school. But that's not the point of going there. The food is!

I went for a jog along the waterfront this weekend and noticed that monstrosity going up. It seems like such a small parcel of land for such a big building. And I'd be PISSED if I lived in that building right behind it (the Mandalay I think?). It looks like the new building is going to really interfere with their Manhattan views.

I just can't see Trenton taking off... This sort of sounds similar to the Victor Lofts project in Camden (albeit on a smaller scale). The Victor Lofts look awesome -- they're made out of the old RCA Victor Victrola factory near the Delaware waterfront, literally minutes across the river from Philly, yet from what I gather, they've never been at full occupancy or stimulated growth in the surrounding neighborhood whatsoever. And that is literally 5 minutes away from downtown Philly. Trenton is so much further away! The lofts sound cool, but they may be best for not someone who works in Philly or NYC, but maybe Princeton or New Brunswick.

Call me daft, but if this project is getting money from the state, what about the upcoming budget cuts to NJ's Dept. of Parks and Recreation:

Nine NJ State Parks scheduled to close, due to budget cuts

I'm all for creating for open green space, but what about our existing state parks?

That article just made me incredibly depressed. Meercat Manor and the Nature Channel are NOT substitutes for the real thing. Getting kids outside and hiking is not only a great nature lesson, but also it gives them fresh air, much needed exercise, teaches them self-reliance, is a great bonding activity free of modern-day distractions, and also is FREE.

Nine NJ State Parks to close this season due to budget cuts!
#39

From the NJ Sierra Club, news that there are going to be $8.8 million worth of budget cuts to 9 State Parks, including a few gems nearby to JC. High Point is definitely one of my favorite day trips!!

If you can make the protest in Trenton on April 23rd, or know of anyone in the area who can go, please pass this along.

The State of New Jersey announced on April 1 that budget cuts will result in the closure of popular parks and recreational areas throughout the state just in time for the busy summer season. These closures come just after voters approved ballot question #3 last November, sending a clear message to our leaders that investing in open space, parks, farmland and historic sites is a priority even during fiscally challenging times.

Due to the $8.8 million in cuts to the Division of Parks and Forestry, nine parks will be either closed or have their services fully eliminated, including:

Monmouth Battlefield State Park,
Stephens State Park,
High Point State Park,
Brendan T. Byrne State Forest,
Round Valley Recreation Area,
Parvin State Park,
Jenny Jump State Forest,
Worthington State Forest and
Fort Mott State Park.

In addition, three parks are slated for partial elimination of services and facilities, including swimming at Ringwood State Park, camping and interpretive services at D&R Canal State Park and severe reduction in hours at Washington Crossing State Park.

"This is the worst April Fool's joke of the year," said Dena Mottola Jaborska, executive director of Environment New Jersey. "But it's no joke --- if Gov. Corzine doesn't lift these draconian budget cuts, New Jersey residents will be locked out of enjoying some of New Jersey's state park jewels."

"No governor at any time, even during the Great Depression, has ever closed a state park," said Jeff Tittel, Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club. "There was always an understanding that during troubled times, parks are a place for people to get together to enjoy their families and forget about their troubles. That the Corzine Administration would close these parks that the people of New Jersey purchased for their own use is unconscionable."

Rally at the Trenton State House

Stay Tuned! More detailed information on the rally will be added to this website shortly: http://www.njkeepitgreen.org/

Well, since we're going to reopen this topic, I'd like to address my PATH nemesis, who is any man who deems it appropriate to sit with his legs spread in a wide open V, thus forcing me to keep my thighs uncomfortably pressed together to avoid leg-to-leg contact. Seriously! We all have our 18 inches of seat, please don't cross the line into my area.

They were a little boring this year, but I was so so happy for Glen Hansard and Market Irglova. Once was one of the best movies I saw last year -- so genuine and simple and beautiful. And they're not even actors! They are working independent musicians who do not even begin to fit in with the Hollywood scene, so to see them get rewarded was pretty amazing. And when Jon Stewart brought Marketa back out after they cut her off... best speech of the night! I heart Glen and Marketa!

Payroll taxes for Jc resident working in NYC
#43

I just started working for a small company in NYC, and the owner was completely flummoxed by my being a NJ resident. As their first out-of-state employee, he totally f-up'ed my first paycheck, deducting *both* NJ and NY state tax, NY disability and NYC resident. Yeah, I wasn't planning on giving 40% of my paycheck away.

Can someone clarify exactly what taxes need to be dedcuted for a NJ resident working in NYC? (Besides Federal, SS and Medicare.) I need to get this straightened out today for my next paycheck.

And do I have anyway of getting back the $100 I gave to NYC for the resident tax, or is that gone forever?

Hi, does anyone know of a good cosmetic dermatologist that will not cost an arm and a leg?? I want to get either a chemical peel or some light dermabrasion to correct some discoloration and roughness from previous acne. I've looked at some places in Manhattan, but I'm wondering if there's a less expensive option on this side of the river. Looking for someone who knows what they're doing, since I'm very fair and have sensitive skin.

oy, not to state the obvious again, but how in the hell are all of these people supposed to commute to nyc?? my ride this morning already involved being pinned against 5 strange men.

and it would be nice if jc's basic necessities started catching up with the influx of people... decent schools of course, but how about a 24 hour drug store, bookstore, etc.

Exactly. I really think that if there was a continuous, uninterrupted pedestrian walkway from Hoboken all the way to the tip of LSP, a LOT more people would use the park. The park as it is now is a barren stretch of underutilized land.

I'm sorry, but when you're running/biking, it is ridiculous to stop and wait for a ferry that is literally a 15 second ride. Or to detour all the way up a very construction-laden Grand Street to Jersey Avenue. I say either ban large boats from the Marina and figure out how to build a bridge/tunnel across Morris Canal. A bridge over the Hudson seems a lot more complex in scope, but the Canal is not that wide, people!

Good point. I usually run along the pedestrian walkway as far north as I can, which usually involves stopping at the locked gates near the Holland Tunnel ventilation tower and starin at Hoboken in the distance. Is it really supposed to take that long to continue the walkway? It would be sweet to be able to run all the way into Hoboken along the river.

Now if we can also figure out a way to continue the walkway south from the Colgate clock into LSP... (taking a $2 ferry ride is ridiculous and detouring up to Jersey Ave. is far!!)

i've never eaten at saigon cafe, only b/c i have not one, but two friends who got food poisoning after eating there.

i love nha trang though!! i agree that you can't ever go wrong w/ any of the pho's (esp. if you're hungover or have a cold), the grilled beef and vermicelli, the summer rolls and especially the beef with vietnamese green leaf. yum!

the table service isn't the greatest, but the guy who usually works the cash register is always nice and extremely gracious. i saw him working as a bagger at pathmark not too long ago... made me respect him all the more, for having two on-the-feet jobs.

exactly. a barnes and noble can fit in anywhere; why use such a dramatic, unique building? i was in london last week, and i forgot how much the tate modern reminds me of the powerhouse (or vice versa) until i walked past it again. wishful thinking, but wouldn't it be cool if there was a branch of the MOMA (MOMAJC??) or the Dia inside the powerhouse? another idea i heard tossed around a few years ago was to have a big indoor farmers market/food hall/artisinal products type thing (like along the likes of Borough Market in London if anyone knows what I'm talking about) on part of the ground floor, and residential condos the rest.

barnes and noble is just so, well... jersey.

yes, dr. savoy himself is a great optometrist and a nice man, but that somehow doesn't make up for the fact that the average wait time there is about 45 minutes to an hour, even with an appointment (that's been my experience at least). the waiting room is usually filled with children running around and a backup of cranky patients, and the staff there can be indifferent, rude, or just super-absentminded. the problem is that the bulk of his business is medicaid, so i don't really feel like he bends over backwards to make visiting his office a pleasant experience or keep his prices low. i pay out of pocket and found the best service and prices (lower than lenscrafters) at the cohen's optical locations in nyc.

haha, my way or the pulaski skyway is hilarious. i might just order myself one. that reminds me of a time during the glenn cunningham administration, when i got my hands on a t-shirt and a tiny metal pin, both paid for by the city, declaring jc's new slogan: "new jersey's shining star". both the t-shirt and pin have an outline of the state, with a star where jc is supposed to be, except it's clearly perched in the south amboy area. classic.
