I have seen Bathtub Refinishing Kits in HD and a few hardware stores. Has anyone ever used these to paint/refinish your bathtub?

Thanks for the sour persimmons. The supermarket situation in DTJC is no different than Hoboken before the Kings opened up. There was one market towards the north end of town -- and plenty of small shops with good produce and a surprisingly useful selection. Somehow, neither issues with the PATH, nor distance from the only supermarket in town, stunted Hoboken's gentrification. In fact, the market situation got a bit better a few years ago, when Key Foods replaced C-Town >>shudder<< Meanwhile, JC's gentrification has continued unabated for several years in a row, and shows little sign of slowing down. There is no indication that people who move to JC are fleeing immediately, either.
Most of the grocery stores in JC have on line shopping and delivery service to compete with Fresh Direct and other on line market delivery services. If you think the PATH is bad at rush hour try getting on the 1, 2, or 3 train during rush hour, it feels like rush hour in Tokyo with people pushing to get on the trains.

Isn't it time we developed a bit more self-esteem and stopped thinking of a JC real estate market and accept that we are part of the peripheral market surrounding Manhattan, a market where for more and more people JC neighborhoods appears on the same "need to check out" list as parts of Brooklyn, Queens, etc.

I agree, we need to have a regional view of the JC RE market. We are still the most affordable option in the metro area that is close to Manhattan. People who have been priced out of DTJC will have to consider Greenville, B/L and the Heights which is great for those areas. Rising values in those areas will push DT values higher.

As for how they can turn a profit while charging $7.99: the same way that nail salons are turning a profit charging $10, or less. They must be underpaying their employees, if they are being paid at all. In between paying rent, mall fees and commissions, stocking the necessary food items to prepare the wide variety of options, utilities, and employees, I doubt that they could break even charging those prices, let alone turn a profit.

They probably use lower priced ingredients, I'd be wary of any type of sushi that is not the top grade of fish. The price for beverages and other add on items is probably higher. The rate they turn the tables is faster than at a place with waiter service.

Slightly amusing to see people predicting the end of the DTJC boom because of overcrowding in PATH trains. That will never come to pass... If your logic was at all sound, no one would live in Williamsburg (have you seen those L trains at rush hour?!? They make the PATH look downright civilized) or even Park Slope or neighborhoods served by the 4/5. Both of those lines run at over capacity on a daily basis.

People choose where they want to live, and then figure out how to get around.

I suspect most of the people predicting the demise of DTJC RE values have been priced out of DTJC and they are praying for anything that will make it affordable for them. There are plenty of them on this board.

Yup, Christie was absolutely correct to pull the plug. If there's going to be pain, let all the stakeholders share it rather than have it rest on NJ taxpayers solely.
ny state won't be crying if/when nj commuters can't commute into manhattan....that's just free advertsing for ny state - move across the hudson

If any of this comes to pass, it will demolish property values in Jersey City, especially downtown.

I doubt it, NJT and AmTrak use the tunnel, to transport commuters from the burbs. JC commuters mainly use. PATH. It will make DTJC even more attractive.

Not sure if it was related to this, but last night we had fireworks in the vicinity. Often times, during nice, or extravagant, weddings in LSP (Liberty House?) fireworks displays are part of the festivities. Noise has a funny way of traveling all over DTJC. That, or maybe you had an inconsiderate neighbor in the building.

There was a large Indian wedding at the Westin Hotel, not sure if this was related to the late night Indian music.
The late night fireworks was part of the Gay Pride celebration in NYC.

I was just there - all sizes are 6.99 with card. They make you pay in advance for the lobster at the curtesy desk, which I found odd in a very plexiglass liquor store way.

I asked them why they make the buyer pay in advance before they steam the lobsters. They said that some customers have ordered steamed lobsters and did not pick them up. They were stuck with lobsters that could not be sold causing the seafood dept to take a hefty loss.

Local residents and developers would never support this. The reputation of section 8 residents is enough to keep them out.

Congrats, Mayor Fulop on your new place - Ogden Avenue is one of the most beautiful blocks in the Heights (IMO, a close second to Sherman Place with it's huge shingle-style and Queen Anne free-standing homes) and I love the old wood-frame houses and am thrilled to see it preserved.

After he was first elected, he held a town meeting in the Heights - part of his "listening tour" - and heard from lots of residents about their ideas for the neighborhood. Now that he's here, I hope gets behind the push to expand the RAD, rebuild the Bandshell in Riverview Park, and push for sensitive development to deal with all the abandoned buildings.

P.S. - If you are reading, Mayor Fulop, I make a mean Cosmo, and am looking forward to an invite to a house party.

You are being sarcastic but this is correct. Most people need cars in NJ and do not in NYC. What's so hard to understand?

Manhattan has a great public transportation system. JC does not. If you work anywhere in NJ that's not on a PATH line, you'll need a car to get to work.

I wish I could just snap my fingers and the whole state would have great public transport and no one would need their cars. But I don't live in this fantasy world, I am in reality where JC is a car centric place for a reason. Because people need cars here.

Manhattan has the best transportation options of any US city with subways, buses and taxis and good public transportation into the city. The streets are still full of private cars. With all these options many people drive into the city every day for work.
If the car is not going away there it won't go away here in jc.

It is quite apparent that some of you have never lived in Jersey City, you may live dtjc but never lived within the city. I have lived all over the city, and if you do not live near the PATH or Rail YOU NEED A CAR!

Transportation in this town is poor, and unreliable, Services in certain parts of this town is non existent. I am not going to go grocery shopping by using the Rail, I have a car for that. When I take the pets to be groomed, I use the car for that. When I need to make a Home Deopot run I use the car for that.

I am very fortunate to live near the lightrail but realistically the rail only takes me to Hoboken and DTJC and sometimes I don't want to go there. CARS ARE NOT GOING AWAY, more people are coming and they are bringing their cars.

When every neighborhood is serviced with Dry Cleaners, Supermarkets, Pet Stores, Pharmacies, Coffee Shops, Cafes, Banks, and Gyms you might see a little less driving and more people walking.

+100

I live in DTJC and I can walk to HD but I am not going to walk there and carry home 2 gallons of paint, brushes and other items.
The car is not going away since the auto industry and all the supporting businesses are a big part of our national economy.

The rate of price increases in the last few years is a bit scary, in my opinion.

Why do you think it's scary? Scary for some, payday for others, I guess. Do you think the 1BR in Paulus Hook will sell or is that an unrealistic price?

I think the "rate of increase" is scary - $200k in 6 years, that's $33K per year increase, whereas salaries remain (almost) flat within the same time frame.

And it doesn't matter what I think - I won't be surprised if someone brought it already.

It's only scary if you are trying to buy in this market and you realize you have been priced out of the places you want to live.
