Re: To JC Bikers Who Ride on Sidewalks...

Here's a question: Do people even realize it's illegal to ride on the sidewalk? As I recall from my suburban youth, that's what we did...and even now I'll catch myself doing it in Newport and have to tell myself "hey dumbass, get into the street".

This has become completely ridiculous. My stars! She used vulgarity! Like the guys hanging on a corner at 3 am have never heard such things.

A few years back I came home to an old wino urinating on my front steps. I used more choice words than Brooke did, and if there's a video floating around I'll be happy to show it to my boss. I'm pretty sure I won't get fired.

They're definitely jerks. And race shouldn't matter, but it does, because we've created a country that marginalizes black men and diminished their sense of responsibility. And that's who's doing the trashing, along with a smattering of (mostly addicted) whites. Changing all this is almost too much to think about, but maybe that young woman is on the right track. Stop littering. It's simple, and it's a start.

Come on, man. Poor people litter more often. They commit more crime (putting aside the crimes of Wall Street). They get shot more often. They do more drugs. We can stop pretending now, okay?

I found this: Note the end of page 101 and 102

http://books.google.com.au/books?id=r ... economic%20debate&f=false

Quote:

The study could not distinguish who exactly did the littering across gender, age or on socio-economic basis. Three reasons identified as to why people litter included laziness, perception that litter is not an important environmental concern and excitement during special events like New Years Eve.

I personally would look at alcohol use that affects poor cognitive behavior in this situation, thus referring to the 'excitement' theory of the study.

Unfortunately society love's to stereotype and make ill-informed general judgements on individuals and situations.
.

This is exactly what's gotten us into this mess as a country - nothing is anyone's fault, that litter and trash got there on its own and what are you gonna do?

Here's the fact: those corners in that part of town are a disaster. It's young black people who hang on those corners. Those young black people are overwhelmingly poor. Draw your own conclusion, don't Google one.

Yvonne brought up the white children, not me. But if we're to bring poverty into this discussion, you can't escape the fact that more people of color live in poverty in our city than white people. Saying otherwise goes beyond PC into silliness.

Most likely, young white children would not have been lounging about the street dumping their empties. So let's be real.

Excuse me???? Nonsense? Please don't tell me what you think I'm thinking or feeling?.you're so wrong?AGAIN!!! FYI, when someone accuses you of something you clearly know is false, they are accusing you of something that might be true of themselves. I don't have to cover up my feelings about this situation. I do feel sorry for her because she is clearly overwhelmed by the situation. I continually speak up (not rant) to people who drop their garbage. It continually falls on deaf ears. We've been over this same sort of issue for years with the the people who also can't be bothered to clean up after their dogs. They are self-centered, anti-social pigs. I feel sorry for all of us because, until more people speak up we will all have to put up with all the crap around here.

So, using your logic, you're afraid that you believed everything you were taught in school, and that your idealistic dreams were shattered. Because, see, that's what you accused Brook of.

Anyway, apparently we both yell at litterers. Good for us, and maybe we'll start a trend.

That's a nice looking place. I doubt that the owners are going to allow a bunch of students to turn it into Animal House. And $7,000 seems kind of high, but you get what you pay for.

This "property" argument is kind of silly. I like to sit at those tables in Grove Plaza and eat lunch. Should I pay rent? I also take my dog to the dog run at VVP - should he kick in a few bucks? I warn you, Henry is a notoriously bad tipper.

Cities provide public services like streets, stoplights, fire departments. And yeah, parking. It doesn't mean there shouldn't be some permits required to keep commuters from grabbing the free spots, or that people who want free parking shouldn't have to search for it, but this argument that street parking should be sold to the highest bidder is kind of dumb.

Not to get all Yvonne-like, but there are lots of people in this city for whom ANY increase in the parking fee would be a hardship. This is a situation that will resolve itself - younger arrivals won't need/want cars, other people will start to realize the hassles outweigh the value of having one and arrange their lives accordingly. But for the forseeable future, a bunch of people need their cars for work or family reasons.

Fair enough, but one piece of advice from someone older and (hopefully a little) wiser: don't let your income either depress nor inflate your sense of worth. Money can come or go, sometimes surprisingly easily.

So, to him, it's not mediocre. IS $100K MEDIOCRE OR ISN'T IT, GET YOUR STORIES STRAIGHT!!

Plus, by that logic, teachers don't like their lives. The ones I know seem cheery enough.

I wasn't disagreeing that $100k is not a huge amount to live on; indeed, I earn considerably more and I certainly don't feel rich. I'm just suggesting a bit more sensitivity on the subject. "I don't know how those losers POSSIBLY get by on less than $100,000" comes off as pretty dick-ish.

Agreed. And if you have kids and presumably work to make that 100K, its really not going to go far in this neck of the woods. Good luck finding full time daycare for less than 18K a year. And if you have student loans (presumable to get a degree that allows you to make 100K), that's probably another 600 to 1000K per month payment, on top of your other expenses. At this rate, you are living paycheck to paycheck.

Gosh, I wasn't even thinking about kids. Can't really imagine kids in the NYC-metro on less than $250k-$300k/year.

That's because this is a thread about microapartments. The idea of a family, daycare etc doesn't really factor into the salary needed to comfortably afford a tiny studio apartment.

The thread may not be about kids, and it may have started with the micro apartments, but the most recent replies are in reaction to the statement made by blanquiita stating that 100K is a 90s-era income and that it shouldnt be considered mediocre.

I get that some people can make do on half that. Personally, I couldn't do it. Not at the level of life quality I have been able to achieve and would like to preserve. If that makes me an aloof, out of touch, two percenter (which, apparently, I am) then so be it. I like my life. I am not going to say that 100K is mediocre (I don't believe it is) but to repeat what someone else has said, it would depress me.

Dude, relax with the self-conrats. Based on what I see, nobody in JC is living like a pasha. We all get that you're proud of your accomplishments, but maybe get over yourself a little.

I'll bet the Powerhouse will become "unstable", and the developer will tragically be "forced" to tear it down. I'm sure they'll put a nice plaque on the 40-story-building-with-a-parking-garage-underneath that goes there in its place.

Why should they be second-class citizens?? Plenty of people buy and rent places that don't have parking. They get permits. You're suggesting that people who got here first have more rights? Maybe American indians should get first dibs on the parking spots.

I don't know if you folks have looked at apartments downtown for a while. $1800 is on the high side, but this will be a new building with some pretty good amenities. Plus, it won't come on line for a couple of years, so that will probably be about right at that time.

Totally agreed on the parking thing, tommyc; there's nothing more depressing than walking down the street looking at garages.

They're calling it the tallest apartment tower, but its neighboring building is 5 stories taller. Is that sloppy journalism, marketing hype or the detail that this will be the tallest rental building (the other one is condos)?

Re: Would 'bus rapid transit' help spur development in JC outside of DT?

I have friend who is a transit planning consultant. She was very involved in the the HBLR project. According to her, transit consultants can be categorized into "rail people" and "bus people", and they have very lively debates (imagine the Christmas party!). Anyway, all the consultants agree that bus rapid transit can be brought on-line much faster and cheaper than any rail system...but that they never come to fruition because people like streetcars and hate buses. I'm sure this makes the bus people very sad.

Must we leap on every tragedy and call for more regulations? The parents here weren't criminals, mental patients or terrorists. They did something stupid when they allowed a child to use a high-powered weapon. Laws will never wipe out stupid.
