when you say "cut down the trees," how many trees are we talking here? 'cause to me, trees make a park.

They are Honey Locust trees planted in 1974 when the current park was constructed. Unfortunately, we were already informed by the city that in their opinion the trees have overgrown the space, and the root systems are in extremely poor condition. They were planning on removing them regardless of any redesign of the park.

If anyone knows me, and the commitment the VNA has to trees, they'd know if it were up to us we would have kept ALL of them. We are hoping for a compromise which would leave one of the existing trees, but the city feels they are too much of a safety concern. Trust me, we're trying. Regardless of the outcome, all of the current design proposals have a generous amount of new trees.

But yet, Indio's is still open for business. That is a much bigger safety concern for the park area than any tree.

TWO YEARS???

No work on the park can happen until the building being renovated to the left of it is completed.

Then why the fuuuuudge were the trees torn down so quickly???

Taken from the above link:

"Landforms Detail

Landforms can be stood on, slept on, rolled down, or viewed from afar."

OK.....slept on? we know who will be sleeping on them... or more likely sleeping it off on them.

Viewed from afar? How afar are we talking? The park is shielded on both sides with buildings and the park isn't all that large to begin with.

I've said it before, and will repeat myself: I am sure the park will look great, for a little while. The scum from across the street will destroy it quickly, and THAT BAR should be transformed to something that can actually contribute to society.

Call it ranting, but Indio's is a real blight on this community. I would think part of the planning process would be to remove any blighting influences to a redevelopment project. It's a shame Fulop hasn't done more to address this.

There has to be something that can be done. You simply cannot have a park across the street from an *ahem* establishment such as this.

If there is anything I can do to help close this sh1thole down, don't hesitate to let me know. I'm not interested in watching these mongrels destroy the area any further. I can't imagine them NOT destroying the new park. I'm sure there was a reason it was closed in the first place.

Opened up the space for what? Is there a baseball field being constructed? I've been unable to attend the meetings, so I don't know the plans for the park, but I'm afraid that it will end up with brightly colored jungle gyms and rubber matting just like every other "park" in JC. It's a real shame that outside of VVP and Hamilton Park there is no "adult space" in any park. I understand that children need places to play, but what about the adults who want to sit outside without hearing children?

They took out EVERY SINGLE TREE. It looks horrific. A park should have trees under which you can sit and read, or take refuge from the summer sun under a nice shade tree.

Agreed. Just the other day, in broad daylight no less, two filthy scumbags were pissing on the side of the building adjacent to the park. No, not the vacant building, the one in which people actually live and make their home. When I called them out on it, he said the bathrooms were locked??

This park is going to look amazing, and add to the value of the neighboorhood..... for about a week or two. Then the savages from Indio's will destroy it. They will use it for their own personal toilet, and probably move their drug deals and prostitute appointments from the cars in front of the bar to the new park.

If this occurs then it is up to the residents who live near the park to help keep a watchful eye and call the police to deter these situations. I realize patrons of Indios are, at times, problems. I live around the corner from the Barge and have seen and heard many bad incidents. The residents have to be vigilant and report any problems, they have to be driven to make the area better and let evryone know that the area is being watched by neighbors who care!

I'm sure the residents of the area, myself included, would be more likely to call the police if they actually gave a shit. With all the time they spend 50 feet away at Carmine's, you would think they would at least give the appearance that they cared about quality of life issues like jerkoffs pissing on the sidewalk. Of course, they don't.

This is where the the people start to post about how the police have more important things to worry about, like drugs and crime. To that I say I agree, provided they actually start to make a dent in the drugs and crime. There's no reason for them to be terrible at both!

I'm sure they are collecting evidence and building a strong case against him. I hope they take as long as they need to build a concrete case against him and send this guy to jail. Fellow inmates are NOTORIOUSLY rough on cops and kid-touchers who get locked up. I hope they make this guy's ass look like the Holland Tunnel!

I just went to google to double check, and look at what I had seen firsthand. If you follow the tracks, they go all the way back to Brunswick St. before the disappear underground. I'm not sure if those are the tracks Path uses or not, but those were the tracks I was referring to.

Here is some video exiting the tunnel. I have never seen a train. It is difficult to tell exactly where the exit is. I will try to listen more closely.

PATH Train

If you are at crescent court and look up the hill underneath the overpass, you will see a Brownish/Orangeish building that says something about belonging to the PATH on it. The train exits the tunnel well to the east of that, between the building and Brunswick St. I know because when I first moved to the area, I took the dog for a walk up there because I was curious as to what was up there.

Wrong. That is where the PATH trains emerge from underground. They blow the horn to alert people who might be in the area, although they should not be.

And as for the freight trains, do some reasearch and read about the kid who lost his leg after being run over by one of the freight trains that run through the area.

The Getty goes by the name of Atlantic Auto repair. Naqi is a good guy. Honest.

As for Pep Boys, they are ALWAYS inept. They use underpaid ,undertrained mechanics who don't give a shit about your car. Doesn't matter which Pep Boys.

So, they give me the date and say the officer will be subpoenaed to appear that day. I get a notice in the mail a short time later telling me my date was pushed back a week. So I show up today for trial with all my photos, research, etc. The prosecutor meets with me and offers something like blocking the flow of traffic, 0 point, $70ish fine + $30ish fee so around $100 total. I say no, telling her I'm here for my trial but don't see the officer, so I'm going to ask the judge to excuse the case. She tells me that according to her forms I'm not scheduled today for trial, the cop has not been subpoenaed, and the judge will just schedule another date. She chaulks it up to administrative error and there's nothing I can do about it. Having missed two half days of work for this garbage, I take the plea bargain and it ends up that the fine was closer to $110 and I'm out $139 total.

You should have just appeared before the judge and complained that having several appearances violates your right to a speedy trial. The worst that would have happened is they would have said no and rescheduled. But you should NEVER cave to what they say. Always test them.

Ok, so because he doesn't even live downtown, we should disregard the fact that he hid an AUTOMATIC ASSAULT WEAPON on 1st/Brunswick? Why does the fact that he lives on Carteret even come up? It really has nothing to do with the story.

We were lucky that nothing else happened. Some drunken asshat from Indio's could have found it and decided to be a big man and shoot it off, or some kid could have done the same thing. This IS a downtown story.

You guys assume those 300 per shift are actually beat cops on the shift. You should find out what percentage of the 900 are Brass who only see the streets on their commute to/from work, then do the math again. I'm sure you will love to find out we are working with a MUCH smaller number on the street than you think.
