Re: Drivers From Elsewhere Are Taking Over Parking Spots In Jersey City Heights, Neighbors Say

I'm tired of the UBER / LYFT drivers timidly driving around trying to figure out where they are, looking at their cell phone to navigate their fare, and stopping on a dime wherever they see fit then obstructing traffic as they sit and wait. The NY state plates are the worst.

There was a sketchy dude sitting on the bike rack at Shoprite, in the way as I was trying to lock up. I politely mentioned to him that if he wanted to be above suspicion of bike theft he shouldn't hang around people's bikes. As you can imagine, I got the predictable response.

I saw this coming right after the word sketchy. You should have kept your mouth shut, luckily you only got a scolding.

The situation might be quite different a few years down the road...

Sorry, I don't follow. Most of the new properties are abated and their taxes are not changing. If there is a general retreat of all property prices due to the reval (something I doubt) then they've lost money.

Abated yes, but will be assessed according to the new reval next year

Are you happy that one person underpays their taxes for years, knowing full well that means someone else is overpaying their taxes?

Should we feel sorry for someone whose taxes are going up, because the value of their home increased from $150k to $1.5 million?

Did delaying the reval make that better or worse?

The mayor attended my block association meeting with the reval team. The phrase of the evening was "do the math". The tax rate will drop accordingly but the assessments will rise exponentially. Just look at the mayor's home, it's current assessment and what he paid, his taxes will double. Assessed properties will be based on age, condition, but most of all the most recent sale price. Market values will dictate the new assessment. Do the math.

I think psychology may play a bigger role than the calculator in that it is a tough sell to say you pay suburb level taxes without the good schools/safe streets/etc.

I hope they raise the taxes even higher so we can compete with the suburbs and hire more police. This is probably why most of the new development are rentals and not condos for sale.

It won't unless it is in your neighborhood. Perhaps they can price the residents out or make them an offer. Most of the homes in the area of the killings are owned by absentee landlords anyway.

The other sad fact is that the stumps are never removed, preventing a new tree from ever being planted. There are now no trees on the west side of Barrow between Mercer and Wayne. I saw the sections of trunk that were cut down. The tree was healthy. They could of trimmed it if the wires were the issue. What's the City's policy when a homeowner calls and "claims" a tree is dangerous and needs to be removed? I called once and was told that there was no Ciy arborist. Who makes the decision? Nearly a hundred years of history gone in an afternoon.

I was always under the impression that a tree had to be dead for a removal process by the city's DPW / Parks and Forestry Division.

Agreed. During the summer and fall, I tend to keep at home a stash of styrofoam coffee cups (with lids and all) and I will often take a roadie with me while I walk the dog. I like to think the lids lend more credence to the "don't mind me, I'm just having a coffee" ruse.

The police do not seem to care that people openly smoke marijuana out in public they should turn a blind eye to drinking too.

Funny you would mention this. I have noticed as of late that there seems to be an unofficial policy of turning a blind eye to the use of marijuana, even in public. One the houses at the northwest corner of 1st and Marin has a VERY STRONG smell of weed coming from it almost daily. There are cops stationed directly across from it working off duty shifts as security guys at O'Hara's and they must be able to smell it. I certainly notice the smell as I walk past that corner with my dog. Likewise, I often walk on Newark and Grove and come across the wafting smell of weed and cops don't seem to care at all.

They're doing off duty work it's not addressed because of union issues. Same thing happened when the cops were doing off duty work when that new school in the Heights was being built last year. Three guys robbed the Catlow Moving Company and beat the owner up...he died a few months later. The cops were called but were "on an off duty job" at the time and could not address it.

It will stay open for one more season which will be till the end of this year December 31, 2017.This has been going on for a few years but this time they sealed the deal. It was supposed to close last December 31st then reopen in March with a limited amount of items mainly plants but it stayed open with half the store closed off. Now it has expanded back to the orignal size and with full stock as well. Unfortunately though it will cease at this year's end.

Popped in there Saturday after the Earth Day festival. What a terrific place, reminds me of a Chinese Whole Foods / Chinatown West. Pressed for time but gave it the once over and was impressed. Picked up some fresh non-Asian fruits and vegetables but taking a gander as I roamed about.

Weird, I could have sworn I commented here.

I think this is great and would love to see it expanded to other parts of the city. The pockmark parking zones are absurd right now, where if you go two blocks from your house suddenly you're in another zone. And having permit parking apply only during work hours makes no sense to me as most people would need parking during the evening anyway.

I like that people working in the area can get a 6 month permit for only $50 as well, which is better than taking chances and getting tickets right now.

also thought this quote was hilarious
Quote:
Pat O'Melia, of Congress Street, called the measure an "attack on the working people of the Heights." O'Melia said it would hurt workers of businesses on Central and Palisade avenues.

"You might as well put red caps on that say 'make America great again,'" O'Melia told council members, "because you're all working for Trump."

wtf does that even mean? I dislike Trump a lot but a lot of Jersey City people love to freak out about any little change.

I too wish that the entire city was like the Heights having a uniformed zoned system instead of this segregated society. As far as change, do you really want a submissive society to just accept what ever is thrown in front of them ? Remember this ordinance should only be inconvenient towards out of town plates so not to convenient local residents. Being loyal to our residents and home owners should be first priority.

A few considerations not thought of: Charging for health care worker visits, neighbors deciding to stay for longer visits late in the evening, and proper signatures for street parameters. Many signatures were collected as a whole but not all reflect each block that zoned parking will be implemented. Knowing this ordinance will not take effect until a year from now there will be time for tweaking and polishing which was the thought process in the initial stages of this plan.

I don?t mind standing, but unlike the laborers and service workers I ride with, I sit on my cracker-butt most of the day and get paid more for it.

So you get paid more huh. Do you normally reveal your salary to strangers on the train ? And what makes you think they make less than you ? You'd be surprised at what people make based on their looks.
