Yep, I saw those passing by it once through the park. :) I was thinking it was for the Path vs the Holland Tunnel once I saw those.

Newport is definitely super-safe. We could see the green from our apartment at all hours of the night, and there was always security there. You could go and sit on the green at 3am without a worry. :)

There are spots on washington around 14th that are free overnight from 6pm to 6am the next morning and free over the weekend. You'll see them start to fill up around 6pm every weekday, so you'd have to make sure you're there in time.

Otherwise, you can park down towards 18th and washington too (same signs indicate you can), but I usually didn't see anyone parked there, so it would be a really easy place for someone to hit your car or the uhaul. Although anyone hitting a uhaul needs to look a little while driving.

I saw that the other day too, but didn't realize they were a rarity here. I used to live in a city that had all sorts of black-ops helicopters hovering around and invisible military jets streaking high in the sky, so I didn't pay it much mind. I'll have to watch for this type of stuff more often.

Sure, it was 2am, but I needed gas. Not a problem in any other state I've driven in (about half of the continental US), since I can just pump it myself.

On a side note, what is with the jug handles and crazy road designs? It's like a 3yr old just drew all the roads using crayons and they built that mess. No left turns and I can't pump my own gas? Has there really been that many problems with these two things in the last decade?

We made the roads like that just to annoy out of towners. It makes it more fun that way.

They're actually quite fun once you know them--finding the apex is actually late, late, wait-for-it...now!

But I've seem some horrendously dangerous turnoffs and 180s that will take someone not paying attention and put them head-on into some concrete. And what's worse is there's a good pileup of fresh marks from people that did just that. Terrible civil engineering...

Gasoline generally doesn't damage paint in the way that, say, brake fluid does.

Thank God it doesn't, but it's still not good for it at all, especially if you don't know it happened and it stays on a while.

Best solution--find out what works for other cities and do that. From what I've seen, Jersey's traffic structure and maintenance is all messed up. I really hate to say it now that I live here, but it's like the third world with signs. :(

I see places where things like this could happen every day. Just tonight I parked my car where if someone isn't looking right, they'll hit the cars parked behind me because a row of street lights is out, and they have been out for weeks now.

What's the Tower in the Newport Green?

My wife and I have been asking ourselves this for the last month now. We see what looks like it's leveled twin in the Hudson during low tide, but we can't figure out what each of these are/were used for.

At first I was thinking the Holland Tunnel, but that's further south, and there are two HUGE structures that are across from each other on the Hudson.

Any insight appreciated.

Have you heard the phrase "location, location, location"? For many people the NYc area isn't just about better paying jobs, it's about the vibrancy of big city living. If you hate the arts and world cuisine, and never want to walk or bike anywhere, I guess Alabama might not be so bad. That house has a Walkscore of 0.

I also hear you can buy entire blocks in Detroit on your credit card, now there's a low cost of living! And they even have arts, at least until they have to sell them.

I've definitely heard that--I grew up in the hotel industry and that's an industry motto for new construction, lol.

It's definitely a much more urban and vibrant life, but you do have to finance it somehow. And there's a certain point of diminishing return. Like the opinion that people living in Manhattan are more close to the action than JC. Probably, but is it worth 2x the rent? In my opinion, no.

That's the stereotypical answer coming from the rest of the states. If you've only lived in the Northeast, there's definitely a lot of the same lifestyle available elsewhere cheaper--but you have to look. There's a lot of art going on there, it's just that most people don't know it originated there. My buddy Christoph Silber lives there even though he spends most of his time working here in NYC and LA.

I've never been much for walking or biking since I'm a car enthusiast, so that's not on my criteria unless parking is an issue (like in JC). I crave free parking with no door dings and miles of open road with like-minded friends. Can't find those here, so my cars will never see NJ.

I hate to say it, but one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever been to (and I hit sushi everywhere I've traveled, even internationally) is in Alabama. Granted, I haven't had a chance to hit up Chelsea Market or Japantown yet, so I'm hoping I'll find a new #1 place soon.

Well, if he didn't see what he hit (or even knew it happened), it still could be accidental.

Although if it was an intentional hit and run, it wouldn't surprise me. There's a lot of shady drivers in the NJ/NYC area imo.
