There are plenty of reputable breeders. Saying all breeders are bad is ridiculous. You should certainly check out shelters and rescues FIRST, but if you want a specific breed, check out breed-specific rescues. I have two purebred dogs I got from breeders, but my previous dog was a purebred, pedigreed English Bulldog I got from the Teterboro shelter who had been just dumped there, papers and AKC registration and all. Prior to her, I had two shelter mixed breeds in a row. Your needs are your needs and you don't need to be bullied or intimidated by people who have good intentions but who don't live your life. I definitely agree that there are thousands of dogs in need of good homes in shelters right now who you could make the difference between life and death for, but it isn't fair to malign all breeders, many of whom are wonderful and who practice healthy and sustainable breeding practices.
If you want a Boston Terrier because of size/disposition/personality, I recommend considering a French Bulldog. I have two and I work closely with the French Bulldog Rescue Network which does amazing work finding new homes for rescued dogs. http://www.frenchbulldogrescue.org/adoption-info/available-dogs2/

Spelt is readily available at most health food stores with bulk grains. Bob's Red Mill makes several spelt flours. The Pathmark on Grand carries a lot of the BRM products, as does the Corrado's in North Arlington. I didn't notice if either one specifically had spelt flour in stock but if you call either one they might order it for you. Fairway has a lot of bulk grains and flours but I don't remember if the one in Woodland Park had it. I don't think I'm being that helpful but at the very least you can order it from BRM online.

I think it is outrageous to tip people schlepping huge heavy boxes and furniture and valuables $20. I think it is insulting. I moved at the end of June during a heat wave and I gave each guy $100 on top of the cost of the move. My ex just moved last weekend in the middle of the snowstorm and the move took TWELVE HOURS. He tipped them $100 each. People who sweat and labor and haul my crap for $15 an hour and manage not to break, lose or steal it deserve thanks, not $20. Tipping may have "gotten out of control", but if there were ever a case to show gratitude with extra money, it is the people transporting your life safely from A to B.

I used to commute to Englewood from DTJC and while I haven't in a while, I don't recall having a problem taking 1&9 to lower 139 and making a right on Manila ever, unless there was an accident. It may be that construction on 139 and the newly designed circle over there are now causing problems, but if they are indeed congested, try going one more block south on 1&9 to St Paul's and taking that east to upper 139 and making a right on Palisade and down Newark. Previously mentioned is Paterson Plank Rd which can often be faster. You can also try taking Manhattan Ave from 1&9 (the street by White Mana) and taking a right on JFK and then a left on 139 upper.

Because the pleasure of bookstores is being in a bookstore. Surrounded by all of that material. Touching books. Leafing through them. Seeing what other people are looking at. Noticing titles I didn't know about. Asking people questions. I don't understand how it is any more anachronistic than food shopping is anachronistic in the days of Fresh Direct. If you like the experience you get from buying books online, great. I've bought books online. It isn't a binary world: buy books in person/do not buy books in person. If I need a textbook, I order it online. If I want to see what strikes my fancy, I want a bookstore.
If you don't go to readings or meetings or signings or any other kind of gathering that might take place in a bookstore, and you're going to make your coffee at home and everything else, then yes, you're not going to get it and that's fine. Bookstores attract other business. They suggest a level of income and education in that area that gives confidence to other small business owners. They typically serve as de facto community gathering places because they DO host events and showcase local artists and writers, and they are good distribution points for other cultural events. If you don't like or value bookstores, that's perfectly fine. Just because it's 2013 doesn't mean bookstores can't succeed. When people are struggling, they don't buy books. They go to the library. When people are flush, they buy books.

Great new restaurant opening at 398 Central Ave in the heights called "Orange and Olive". Great to see new dynamic restaurants opening in areas outside of downtown. They have a communal table concept with a menu changing every 3 weeks. Small business is the backbone of the economy.

If all you need to do is transport people from A to B and it isn't an occasion where comfort or style is an issue, you can call just about any school bus company. They will be insured and are usually very reasonable. In Englewood where I worked at a theater, we occasionally needed to transport large numbers of performers places for residency activities or what have you, and there was a company just down the road from us we used a lot.

LOL, so, in the "how much more ironic can my life get" department, my estranged husband is moving from our (my former) house in Brooklyn to West Side Ave over across from Lincoln Park. It will actually make things more convenient in terms of sharing custody of our dogs and stuff, and truth be told, I was the one who pushed him to look here. We almost moved here twice during our marriage, but he juuuust couldn't handle the leap. Now, though,he needed a lot of space and a yard for the dogs and he was going pay a ton more in Brooklyn, so I am fine with how it worked out. However, aside from knowing a bit about that small stretch of West Side, I don't know what is over there in terms of access to busses to shopping, restaurants, even the name of the neighborhood. I saw the place and it is adorable but he won't have a car and as friendly as we are, I am not going to be schlepping him all over to the supermarket. Can he take a bus to Newport, or out 440 to the movies or Pathmark? What is there in terms of dining besides the Tavern with the good burger? Any insights welcomed.

I used to run many NJ venues. It is not comparable market-wise to the Mayo Center or bergenPAC because it is three times the size of those venues. I would hate to see a LiveNation et al take over but in their defense, they do have access to tours that smaller independent venues a lot of times do not. The Loews is also considered part of the NYC advertising and exclusivity markets, which further hampers access to anything that is booked into, say, the Beacon. However, a talented leadership team can find ways to mitigate those losses with strategic programming choices. Making a relatively small investment by JC in a venue like this will pay for itself a hundred times over with a little patience. The community stake in venues such as this cannot be discounted. It's essential that the community remain the primary stakeholder or else it will not succeed. There are only so many nights people from elsewhere are willing to come to Jersey City to pay $50-250, and with 3000+ seats to fill, it can't sit empty on Tuesdays either. Case in point is the Wellmont in Montclair which started off strong but is now having a hard time.

I've been actively talking to the marketing people at Fairway for close to a year about a JC location. I agree that Fairway is the best choice of all of these options, and they genuinely know how to integrate themselves into a community. The Red Hook Fairway hired almost exclusively from the local housing projects and has engaged on a personal level with all residents. They have been an AMAZING asset to Red Hook. They are affordable and full-service. The location on Route 46 is one of the best supermarkets I've ever been to.
Wegman's has stated in print for over a decade that they have no desire or intent to move any closer to NYC/Northern NJ than they are at present, because the space costs would make it impossible for them to operate the way they want to. FAIRWAY is very responsive and eager to know what people want. If enough people make it clear that there is a demand, they will definitely consider coming here.

I am always glad to see positive articles about JC and of course about the food scene, but it would be nice if one of them came out and wasn't full of this condescending, "oh, wow, there are people on the other side of the river who aren't aliens or thugs". I have lived here since 1999 and had the sensitivity to realize I wasn't the Christopher Columbus of Harsimus Cove, and it kills me to keep reading the same "I'm a genius for finding New Jersey" crap fifteen years later. Oh well. It's a blessing and a curse, I suppose.

This morning, not only was a car parked in the red zone (this is standard on First bet Erie and Grove, too) on the SE corner of Jersey but two SUVs were double parked in the *actual traffic lane*, one behind the other just south of Second, so that to cross Jersey or turn either way, I had to literally drive almost to the center line to see around the double parked vehicles. This was Saturday morning around 8:30 AM. It was infuriating. Neither vehicle had a driver in it although they both had their hazards blinking, or I would have stopped and given them both a piece of my mind. That is easily one of the worst intersections in the area. A stop sign there would help, as the same problem exists at First and Jersey which is also a nightmare to pass through.
