I got one of these though I attended the court and appeared before the judge. So now I had 2 dates - one for the original adjourned date and other for the failure to appear. I called up the court to enquire about it and guess what - they gave me a third date. Finally got my lawyer to confirm the correct date.
I believe it is just another attempt to intimidate people - and mostly successful too.

It was a special event for public dignitaries. Frank Guarini was a great public servant. He represented the old U.S. 14th congressional district which was the entire area of Jersey City. Today J.C. is broken up into 3 districts represented by those that live in other towns that share the small area of J.C. Three cheers for Frank Guarini and the U.S. post office that bears his name.

So is this Morton Williams different from the ones in Manhattan? I have been to a few of them and would hardly call them premium. The ones in Manhattan at least are basically like a Gristedes.

Although I guess you could call them 'premium' in the sense that they have pretty high prices for regular grocery store items.

It's located in the base of the Shore condos, look for the elephant/water fountains. It's not affiliated with Wegmans.

Morton Williams opened today in Newport, its nice having a premium supermarket in the hood. Its like a small Wegmans with emphasis on easily prepared foods and premium products. Some of the premium products are Asian, it's nice to see more diversity in my food options. While it won't replace my trips to Shop Rite and Trader Joes & Target for basics it will take some of my business away from Whole Foods and Citarellas.

GANGS GROW IN SUBURBAN SCHOOLS

The US Department of Justice has released a report that states the growth of criminal gangs is increasing in all socio economic areas of the country, http://www.usdoj.gov/ndic/pubs11/13157/index.htm . SERAPH who provides school safety consulting to over 20,000 schools in the U.S. has observed a dramatic increase in gang recruitment in suburban schools.

Ron Holvey, Gang Interdiction Special Consultant http://seraph.net/about_ron_holvey.html for SERAPH explains the problem, ?School officials have been caught off guard by the rise of gangs in suburban areas. Straight Edge, Juggalos, Crips and Bloods have all been recruiting juveniles in these areas of the country.?

NEW STUDY SHOWS CHANGE IN CRIME TRENDS IN THE U.S.

A new study by the PERF [ http://www.policeforum.org ], shows top three crime trends in the U.S. are:

1. Criminal gangs
2. Juvenile crime
3. Impulsive violence

I got one of these the other day despite me visiting the court in person weeks ago and filling out a form requesting a court date. It's so annoying that they no longer take walk-ins for parking court. It's even more annoying that I'm continually calling the phone number on the notice today (201-209-6700), and when you follow the prompts and press #2 to speak to a person, it hangs up on you. Same thing if you press 0 for operator. So typical of JC that they can't even get a phone system to work properly.

I think it's about the coolest street name in JC. Vroom is an old Dutch name. Many of the streets around there have similar names as it was the location of the original 17th century Dutch settlement. You'll see the same names on the headstones in the graveyard across from the Old Bergen Church.

Newport is fine if you want the highrise views of NYC thing. You can also look at Grove pointe if you want a high rise that is closer to a real neighborhood. Of course your cheapest bet would be a unrenovated townhouse or tenement style building.

I've lived in the Thomas Jefferson Bldg for almost 20 years and have been very satisfied. Maintenance has always resolved my problems. I've had bugs and was put on the list so that the exterminator comes twice a month and the bugs went away.

Of course I've had incidents I could grouse about but for the most part management has been responsive and reasonable.

The biggest problem I've had living at Newport is with the public school system. After 6th grade there are few/no good choices other than private school.

Has anyone brought this up to Steven Fulop yet? I'm sure he'd be useful for this type of thing.

I worked with him to get the garbage trucks on my street moved to an earlier time. He got the job done!

I was just thinking the same thing. Anyone who buys $20 tickets, I'm surmising, is not really that financially savvy. The best thing they could do is treat themselves to maybe a nice long vacation, pay off their mortgage and credit card debt, then take everything that's left over to an experienced broker/cfp.

Lincoln Park/ Peter's College area: Fast Food Owner mugged - Cam could solve robbery.

There is a Hollywood Chicken around Bergen & Glenwood corner -- I wonder if that is where this owner was walking from when he got mugged on Jewett. I think Hollywood is owned by the same guys who own Crown Chicken on Communipaw -- My bag from the Hollywood downtown always says Crown Chicken on it.

Cam could solve robbery

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Jersey City police are hoping a grocery store security camera contains images of two robbers who assaulted a city fast-food restaurant owner as he walked home with the day's receipts yesterday, officials said.

The 42-year-old Jewett Avenue man told police that at 12:50 a.m. he left his business at Bergen and Glenwood avenues and realized he was being followed by two men, reports said. When he walked up to a random doorway on Jewett Avenue in a ruse to make them think he'd reached his home, one of them punched him in the back of the head and knocked him to the ground, reports said.

When the victim tried to fight back, the robber repeatedly punched him in the face before taking the $2,000 he was carrying, reports said, adding that he described the men as being 18 or 19 years old.

Officers believe a security camera may have captured images of the robbers as they ran away, reports said.

Lucky couple holds winning $1M ticket

Tuesday, June 17, 2008
By MEGAN DeMARCO
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A customer of Grove News at 119 Newark Ave. in Jersey City, beat astronomical odds and turned a $20 lottery ticket into $1 million yesterday.

The customer, who has not been identified, won $1 million from "$1,000,000 Fortune," a New Jersey Lottery instant scratch-off game, store manager Arif Patel said.

Just how lucky was the winner? With just six winning $1 million tickets out of 1.2 million printed, the odds are 200,000 to 1.

A woman with her husband came into Patel's store and bought one ticket, which isn't cheap at $20 a pop. When she started scratching off the ticket, her husband started asking questions about the game. "I figured something was wrong," said Patel.

Instead, Patel, who's never had anything close to this size payoff - was taking part in a once-in-a-lifetime event. "It's very rare," he said.

N.J. Lottery spokesman Dominick DeMarco said the lucky winner will receive a check in the mail two to three weeks after filing the paperwork, either in the store or at the N.J. Lottery headquarters in Trenton.

The check though, will not be for $1 million, DeMarco said, but for $650,000, the remaining amount after the federal government takes its cut.

DeMarco said his agency strongly encourages big-money winners to sit down with a financial planner to avoid the shock of seeing the following year's income tax bill in April.

"It cuts down on surprises," he said. "It's supposed to be life-changing money for the good."

As of yesterday afternoon, the happy customers had not yet come back to the store to fill out the required paperwork.

Re: How to see a doctor today?

My Wife and I have been going to Center for Family Health, a clinic of Hoboken University Medical Center, for at least 9 years. It's not a ritzy practice, but it's clean, well run, and because it's part of a teaching hospital, even if your regular doctor is unavailable, you can ALWAYS get seen that day by a resident. If your problem is over the resident's head then an attending doctor is available.

We've found that for basic healthcare, and gatekeeping like prescriptions, referrals etc, they're pretty satifactory and conveniently local.
