Re: Lincoln Park Area (i.e. Harrison Ave. b/w Kennedy and West Side Ave.

Good value condos available there. However, I would be more afraid to walk down westside ave now than when I was 6 years old and walking to school down westside ave in the early sixties...it has changed that much, for the worse, though there have been some attempts to improve. Not much future in my opinion. Wait a couple years, get an extra job, sack away the money, and buy downtown when the market is bottoming out.

Generally, a "regressive" neighborhood, not much to keep your attention...

The population is exploding here in Hudson County PATH can only go so far as the tunnels allow. Perhaps when they dig one tunnel they should dig another for an additional PATH train. You can only fit so much in a space. Keep building J.C. !

Re: Historic Newark Avenue -- New board for formerly abandoned cemetery

I was born in Jersey City and have lived here for the past 51 years. I just recently starting tracing my family through Ancestry.com. I have just found out that my great-granfather and great-grandmother are buried in this cemetery. My Mom, who is now 91 years old, told me she remembered going with her grandfather to this cemetery when she was a very young girl to visit her grand-mothers grave. I visited this cemetery on Feb 18, 2008 trying to locate their graves. My husband and I walked up and down the what used to be rows of headstones in a futile attempt to find my great-grandparents graves. Since there was a car in the driveway by the house, we rang the bell, but nobody answered. There was a number on the door to call and I called and left my cell number asking if someone could tell my where John Mathew Austin was buried. Obviously nobody returned my call. However, whicle we were walking around in the rain, trying to find the headstones, people came out of the house. We called to them, they looked and just got in their car and took off. I understand from the postings that these people were no longer being paid, but that's no reason to leave us walking around in the rain. Had the had to decency to at least talk with us, perhaps this so called locked file with the records could have been opened to supply me with information that would have allowed me to continue tracing my heritage. I believe my grandfather died in 1939, and my grandmother quite a few years before him. Do you think there is any hope of ever obtaining informaiton on their burials? Also, it shoul dbe noted that it was February when we were there, which is not long after the last board members death in December, however, there was bramble, beer botles, a multitude of overturned headstones, headstones falling down the hill, etc. It appears as theough this cemetery was not being kept for much longer than 2 months.

JC Plumbing Permits
Home away from home
Home away from home

We are doing a bathroom renovation in a condo (new bathtub, toilet, vanity, tiles) and need a JC plumbing permit.

Our plumber is a licensed NJ contractor, but he never pulled permits in our fair town.

Can someone help us with a few basic facts:

1. I am working under assumption that plumbing (and other)permits are issued by the Office of the Construction Code Official, 30 Montgomery St, room 412. Is that correct, and if so does anyone know what time they open on Monday (the JC website gives only hours of the Satellite Office on MLK).

2. I realize that only a licensed plumber can pull a permit - can we speed things up by picking up an application for him, etc, etc? How does he actually apply for a permit? By fax?

3. How quickly are permits for a straightforward bathroom renovations (no construction) issued in JC, and is there a fast track (for extra fee) to speed the process up?

4. After the plumbing work and fixture installation work is done, how quickly can an inspection be scheduled before the work is closed and the tiling can begin? Is an inspection always required on this type of job?

Thanks

Re: Vegetarian food in JC?

One more thought on this subject and then I'll retreat for the morning...

Not sure if you're a fan of soy-based mock meats, but Grove Street's Wild Fusion has quite a few of these sorts of dishes on their lengthy menu.

Along the same lines, one or two JCListers have praised Sawadee's vegetarian mock duck in red coconut-curry sauce in this thread. The restaurant is located on Newark Avenue and here's a link to Sawadee's menu for your viewing pleasure.

For those out there who aren't too familiar with veggie-friendly faux meats, see Wikipedia's Imitation Meats article for details.

While I tend to be a meat eater myself, I really like veggie ham and mock abalone (along with a handful of other meat analogues out there).

Here are some more possibilities for you in your JC dining adventures:

You may want to check out the Brownstone Diner and Pancake Factory at the corner of Grand Street and Jersey Avenue.

While they do serve the carnivores and omnivores among us, they have all kinds of vegetarian-friendly offerings (especially if you eat dairy and eggs) and they open early and close late.

Their extensive menu features sweet potato fries, veggie burgers, pastas, pancakes, salads, omelets, eggplant parmigiana, waffles, panini, juices, shakes, desserts, diet-busting appetizers (cheese quesadillas, fried zucchini sticks, jalapeno poppers, broccoli-and-cheddar potato skins, fried mozzarella sticks), etc.

I brought a vegetarian friend to Brownstone once and she enjoyed her time there.

For take-out or delivery, you may dig Bubby's Burritos on Jersey Avenue (one block south of Van Vorst Park).

Besides burritos, tacos, chips/dips/nachos, wraps, salads, desserts and smoothies, the restaurant also boasts vegetarian chili, vegan chili, tofu sour cream and a lard-free menu.

When my brother and his vegan buddy were crashing at my pad, they both really appreciated all that Bubby's had to offer.

One last place I am surprised I didn't think of sooner: Ibby's Falafel!

You can dine inside or at outdoor tables at their small Grove Street cafe, and they appear to have mastered such veggie favorites as baba ghanoush, hummus, tabouli, stuffed grape leaves, spinach pie and, of course, FALAFEL!

They also have lentil soup on their menu, though you may want to make sure it's not flavored with meat.

When I go there, I get the falafel-and-baba-ghanoush sandwich (even though I am a meat eater) and I find that I always leave satisfied.

Not only reasonable, but the cleanest place (for an old facility) that I've ever seen. He was able to finally get my Toyota running right after having the dealership and another mechanic miss the problem.

Anyone can join. PCUE stands for Parents and COMMUNITY United for Education. The more people show up at the public meetings and get involved in putting pressure where it's needed, the more accountability we can expect.

And by the way, don'tstealmyrocks, there is more to the story about sending notes home with children than you can see from this. To begin with, understand that many parents in JC don't have a car to get around, a computer to access the internet or anything like extra time to go anywhere for almost any reason. It is, indeed, by federal mandate, the Board of Education's responsibility to maintain a healthy environment in the public schools.

You have some good ideas. Why don't you contact PCUE's lead organizer through the website. I'm sure he'd be happy to hear what you have to say.

Jersey City Deputy Mayor Kabili Tayari charged with theft
by Michaelangelo Conte
Thursday July 03, 2008, 12:47 PM

Journal file photo
Kabili TayariJersey City Deputy Mayor Kabili Tayari was arrested by Port Authority police yesterday, who pulled him over in a rental car that had been reported stolen, reports said.
Tayari was charged with theft under his given name, Randy Brown, officials said today.

He was arrested in Jersey City and charged with theft by failure to make proper disposition of property received, based on allegations by a car rental business at Newark Liberty International Airport, said Jennifer Frieberg, a spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Tayari was arrested at 9:30 a.m., fingerprinted and booked by Port Authority police and later released, said Frieberg, adding that the charges against him are being handled by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The vehicle Tayari was in when he was arrested was returned to the airport rental service, Frieberg said.

The charge apparently stems from his failure to return a rental vehicle, officials said. It's not clear how long he had the car or what the circumstances were but the Essex County Prosecutor's Office is expected to provide additional information on the charges later today.

Tayari, who is in his late 50's, has been a Jersey City employee for the past 12 years and has been president of the Jersey City branch of the NAACP at least as long.

He got his start in city government in the administration of Mayor Bret Schundler and has also served as president of the Board of Education and interim Municipal Court director.

During the administration of Jersey City Mayor Glenn D. Cunningham, he was an assistant business administrator and an adviser to the mayor.

As of October 2007, his city salary was $104,871, officials said.

Feeling more cramped on the PATH????
Home away from home
Home away from home

If you are feeling more cramped on the PATH in recent months it is real and not perception.

NYT article: "The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has recorded a similar decline in travel across its bridges and tunnels since early March, when it raised tolls. The greatest decline was in April, when traffic fell by 4.2 percent. (The transportation authority also increased tolls in March, but by a much smaller amount.)

At the same time, subway, bus and commuter rail ridership has increased.

Weekday subway ridership was up 6.5 percent in April, compared with the same month a year ago. April ridership increased 5.5 percent on the Long Island Rail Road, 4.3 percent on the Metro-North Railroad and almost 9 percent on PATH trains between Manhattan and New Jersey. Use of the subways and rail lines also increased in May, compared with the previous year, but in most cases by smaller amounts. New Jersey Transit ridership, including bus, commuter rail and light rail, was up about 4.6 percent in April and May combined".

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/03/nyr ... q=PATH&st=nyt&oref=slogin

So PATH ridership has increased by a greater percentage than any of the other public transportation systems in the region. Combine increased number of people in these downtown highrises and the number that should be coming online soon and the real posibility that energy may become even more expensive we may soon need:

Parking authority is not here to clean the streets, their here to make money for the city. As for parking after the sweeper has passed, they do not enforce this and if they did it would be counter productive for the city as the parking situation across the city is a nightmare. Also the parking authority is more money hungry in downtown JC because they know the residents will have the money to pay up more easily. Sometimes around where I live they never pass or only the street sweeper passes by itself but since the ready and able men always pass the streets are always clean.

The whole business is a racket. Anybody ever noticed the "street sweepers" don't actually sweep up anything?

The SOLE purpose is to grow revenue by ticketing vehicles, ostensibly to clear the way for the "street sweepers."

Which is a shame. Because as long as the JCPA (just about the most corrupt and patronage-ridden agency in JC, by the way) is going to waste taxpayer-funded diesel driving these things up and down the streets of Our Fair City, they might as well actually function. Right?

The sweepers in NYC work just fine--you could eat of the freshly swept pavement. But somehow JC managed to wind up with a munificent fleet of leaf blowers on wheels...

Shall we petition Boss Healy? Or just collapse into a heap of smoldering curbside cynicism?

Re: Street Sweeping

Irritating and useless at cleaning as the street sweeeping is, it serves an important purpose in keeping parking spots circulating. It stops people leaving semi-abandoned cars on the streets, and ensures there is a constant turnover of spaces.

One of the things that makes parking in Hoboken even worse, is that they only have to move once per week, so there is much less daily turnover.

I can't believe this hasn't shown up here yet. The real kicker is that this rental car was routinely ticketed every week for being parked on the wrong side of the street during alternate side parking days. I guess I shouldn't be that surprised.

WCBS AM 880 continues to report it but it doesn't look like any print publication has mentioned it. Unfortunately, whatever they've put on their website shows up in google searches but somehow doesn't stay on the website - you can't actually get it when you search on the website. But I don't think they purposely removed it as I just heard it reported again on the radio. But I don't have any link or source I can quote. Just listen to WCBS AM 880.
