The cart is back at Washington and Sussex. There is also one at Essex and Washington.

I'm guessing that the BJ's truck came to pick the carts up and just dumped the trash right there on the street, but I can't be sure of it.

A tiny bit good news:

The pile of trash that I spoke of in the post above (that used to be in the BJ's carts at the corner of Wayne and Barrow) has been removed and discarded.

Well, CK, you sure got that wrong - no surprise.

Different strokes for different folks. The DJ went to the cops. I might consider asking the crowd, maybe walking up the street. But that's just me (like Jules, I "walk the Earth).

Course, "they" in the crowd might be the same as the 16 year old who lost track of her charge. If you're a parent, you either have or will lose track of your kid, at least once. No one has yet said how far she'd walked - a half a block?

GWB is right on - the guy did what *should* have been done, maybe more. This is not news, shame on the JJ for trumpeting a sad affair, and shame on you who jump on the bandwagon with your "racialistisms!!"

Taqueria. You can have it.
Newbie
Newbie

I have been reading the reviews for Taqueria with interest. When this placed opened I made a habit of visiting about once a week. I was a big fan of the pozole and so I would come in just for that. Many people have said that the food here is SO authentic that they are happy to overlook the place's negative vibe just to get at those tacos. Well...I'm not. Spending 4+ hours a month here for many months allowed me to witness some surprisingly surly behavior on the part of the staff. Not just a one-off...but clearly a trend. As someone else pointed out, the standard of behavior is set by the owners and trickles down through the ranks...resulting in a dining experience which can range from uncomfortable to embarrassing. Now I am not saying that on every single visit I experienced this...and many times I observed poor treatment of others...not necessarily myself. On my last visit I sat down with my wife to look over one of the paper menus and the owner came over after 5 minutes and in a voice dripping with sarcasm said..."I hope you're aware...you have to order at the counter?" (Actually, that looks amazingly innocuous in print...but those of you who have experienced the attitude in this place will recognize "the Phil" in this comment.) Who is this guy...the maitre d' at the Ritz? SO, I looked at my wife and asked her, "Remind me again why we keep coming to this place?" And we haven't been back for over a year now...and don't miss it all. You know...the food might be authentic...it might not. I'm not Mexican so that distinction is lost on me. I just want my food to taste good and to be served by someone who appears to understand what it means to work in the HOSPITALITY industry. I really don't expect to have my tuchus kissed and I don't need for the owner to be my buddy. But I don't feel right giving my money to a place that obviously holds its client?le in such open contempt. Yes I know there will be folks who'll say, "Good! Leaves more for us (nya, nya, nya)" but I really think it will only leave more for you temporarily. I don't think it will be too long before that sign on the corner changes again. FYI...I have found some really good places on Bergenline where the food is good and the staff are friendly...definitely worth exploring.

Thankfully, they're not. You can't legislate morality (obviously it's been tried). Foisting responsiblility for making sure someone's kids are safe on someone else would be a nightmare. There is a reason there is such a thing as "parental rights". There is also "parental responsibility".

That's not to say nobody should look out for other's kids- quite the opposite. But I can't imagine if some reprobate decides to dump their kid at the mall alone and the kid gets itself hurt that somehow the shoppers should be liable for not doing something about it.

What would be next- getting sued by the failure of a parent for not "co parenting" their kids? Because that's what you'd be asking them to do.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions & headline grabbing politicians. Anyone suggesting some sort of liability for an act of ommission, at least in this sphere, hasn't thought it through. You would basically be legislated into being your brother's keeper.

Now, you SHOULD be your brother's keeper...and the finder of lost children (que Jules from Pulp Fiction). But not because if you aren't you'll go to jail. You should do it because that is the path of the righteous man (OK I'll stop now).

Jersey City Obama event (gas prices)
Home away from home
Home away from home

This Wednesday, we'll be at a gas station near you?we're pushing back against the RNC's new ads blaming Obama for gas prices. We need everyone out to remind people McCain is Big Oil's candidate?not Obama. There's a National Day of Action for an Oil-Free President event in Jersey City. Can you make it? <http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/ev ... 0-3501955-ZOReoGx&t=1> Click to RSVP <http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/ev ... 0-3501955-ZOReoGx&t=2> Dear MoveOn member, Have you seen the latest ad from the RNC? With holiday travel and gas prices on every channel, the Republicans are spending over $3 million in the next week to convince voters that high gas prices are Barack Obama's fault. What's scary is that their strategy is working?even though the Republicans' energy policy got us into this mess! So this Wednesday, we're pushing back with our National Day of Action for an Oil-Free President. We'll be gathering at gas stations around the country to reach out to voters and make sure they know John McCain is Big Oil's candidate and that he won't solve our energy crisis. Can you join the event in Jersey City? Host: Naava P.?fellow MoveOn member Where: HOLLAND TUNNEL GAS STATION (in Jersey City) When: Wednesday, Jul. 9, 2008, at 5:00 PM Here's the link to RSVP: http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/ev ... 13130-3501955-ZOReoGx&t=3 <http://pol.moveon.org/event/events/ev ... 0-3501955-ZOReoGx&t=3> We'll be in front of gas stations with signs and fliers to remind people that McCain is in the pocket of Big Oil. His campaign is run by oil industry lobbyists,1 and he looks to Big Oil for big campaign contributions.2 We can't count on him to push for alternative energy solutions or help lower gas prices. But soon ads blaming Obama for gas prices will be up all over the country. And people squeezed by energy costs may forget that it was another Republican with close ties to Big Oil and former oil lobbyists advising him in the White House who brought us to this point. Now is the time to make sure voters know John McCain won't solve our energy crisis. Re: Path Alerts

Easy enough to turn them off. All I can say is they've helped me and mine avoid quite a few delays. They're an information edge for sure- Other poor slobs streaming down to a station that is for all intents & purposes closed, while those "in the know" just bail to another station or find a ferry, or leave early.

Much, much better than standing around in a station, past the turnstile, waiting forever for a train only for the idiot muffle-voice to come on and say something utterly garbled and trying to figure out if you're screwed or if you should stay put.

I find them to be one of the only things that the PA does right.

Does anyone remember the blackout? There was no getting out of the city. Only reason my girl did was because I called her from JC, which still had power, and told her to get the hell out of Dodge, which she did, running like a rockstar to the 38th Street Ferry. If she hadn't, she would have been trapped there, because not an hour later the lines were thousands of people deep for those little boats.

The PATH issue is different you say? Of course it is. My point is information is king, especially in a city the size of Manhattan. I want to know what the "escape tunnels" are doing at every moment, thank you very much.

I cannot imagine why anyone who uses the PATH regularly would not want to be looped in on any little bit of info that may disrupt their commute.

All of that said- To the OP, yeah, it's amazing how banged up they are and how many service interruptions have to be "wired" out to all of us. If anything it could be viewed as a PR disaster. I am sure at some point some idiot will write an expose based on their in box and state, "TEH PATH WERENT WORKIN 10 DAYZ OUT OF 30 DIS MONTH", and then the bureaucrats will freak and go CYA, and they'll stop sending messages unless the PATH has actually sunk below the river bed.

The "digital locking signal" is a GREAT concept!

I wonder how expensive it would be for Jersey City stores to employ this sort of anti-theft system (or install waist-high barriers along the sidewalk outside store entrances).

In my opinion, they should be required to do one or the other as soon as possible.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orlando city commissioners will try to figure out what to do with shopping carts that end up where they don't belong. Some city leaders say they're creating an eye sore.

Shopping cars that belong to a Publix on Colonial Drive have been found on the sidewalk just a few feet away from the busy road. It's part of a problem that city leaders hope to fix soon.

"I get angry at the folks who take them off the property. Basically it's property of the store," said Doug Shellhammer, the store manager at Clemen's Produce.

Nearly 8 years ago, Clemens Produce installed metal poles on each shopping cart because so many of them would end up missing. Shellhammer said he doesn't even want customers taking carts to the parking lot, but some people still find a way.

"I can't possibly hold all of these things to my car that's parked right over there," said customer Allen Aboo.

Monday morning, the city might consider requiring new stores with more than 20 carts to install a retention system similar to what is being used at Big Lots. Customers have to pay a quarter for each cart. They don't get their money back until they return it.

At Wal-Mart, a digital locking signal prevents shoppers from leaving the parking lot with their carts.

The city is expected to review the current ordinances on the books to see what needs to be updated.

Fair points, GWB, but there are many steps in between seeing the kid on the street and then taking the kid away in your car if you really risk some sort of bogus charge.

How people could watch her walk around and not try to pull her over to safety, just keep an eye on her, help her look for her family, call the cops...and instead just let her walk into a major intersection...is what's most frightening.

Agreed. I guess I'm trying to believe in the overall good of humanity. To Alb's point below yours, some people just aren't cut out for stepping up. We've all seen something "happening" and the looky loo's just sit there, paralyzed. Sometimes you gotta make a move.

Reminds me of that news story a few weeks ago. Was it Boston? Some old man got drilled with a car- Car kept going. Whole thing was on tape. Guy just layed there as people walked by, glanced over, didn't do anything. Seemed like a long time, but in reality it was maybe a minute before some guy walked over to see what was going on.

I just don't believe that the city is a cold place. I think there is somewhat of a jadedness. Let's be real- it seems like every time I return someone's smile, 2 seconds later it's "how you doin, rough weather, do you have a cigarette/my car broke down/can I have some money?" There's a ton of people always looking to see what they can scam.

But I can tell you, every time someone legitimately needed help, with directions, with anything not $$$ related, with carrying things through the subway, I watch people fall all over themselves trying to be the first one to lend a hand. It's like a bunch of little kids just WAITING for an opportunity to be a boy/girlscout.

So I go with Alb's assessment- Sometimes we're just clueless & we're not paying attention, and maybe our guard is up a little too high, but I fervently believe most people really just want to help.

Proof? I bet you every person who read this thread thought, "I wish I had been there, I would have done the same thing" and you probably would have, if you had only seen it.

Oh- and the guy's not a hero. He's a good man, & a good citizen. He simply did what we're SUPPOSED to do. He deserves credit for that, but the word "hero" gets thrown around a little too liberally. If what he did is considered exceptional, that's sad. In my book, it's under the heading of "the cost of admission for being a man/woman in this world"

Probably people with slow reflexes who weren't quite sure if they understood what they were seeing.

I once had to help look for a friend's misplaced son in that area. The copy at the MLK shopping center was TERRIBLE (just berated my friend for losing her son; didn't get on his radio for one second to try to find the kid), but the intimidating looking guys hanging out on the street tried to be helpful, and a church worker came marching up the street with the boy about a minute after I began walking along the street trying to find him.

More lead found in schools' water

By LYSA CHEN
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER...

The latest results showed that lead levels at Schools 5 and 9 ranged from 20.1 parts per billion to 173 parts per billion for "first-draw" samples taken from eight water sources. Lead levels above 20 parts per billion are considered elevated by the EPA. First draw means the water source hadn't been used for at least eight hours.

Only one water source at School 5 remained elevated during the "second draw," falling from 128 parts per billion to 54.1 parts per billion.

First, this lead testing article is a lot better written than the other Jersey Journal lead testing articles.

Second: this level of lead contamination is not THAT high. It's comparable to the amount of lead that would enter a wine if you spent a meal drinking wine from a leaded crystal goblet.

See this Canadian health agency link.

The CDC carries an abstract of a 2004 paper indicating that no children tested who grew up in homes with tap water with lead contamination over 300 parts per billion showed signs of high blood lead levels.

On the other hand, about half of the homes involved in the study reported using a water filter.

The CDC published an addendeum with the abstract emphasizing that the people should try to eliminate any known sources of lead in children's environment.

Here's a NYT article that says drinking water lead contamination really should be under 10 parts per billion.

Third, P.S. 5 is actually a really well run school with good teachers and terrific, suburban-quality standardized test scores, and, for the most part, the kids there seem to be well-behaved. This is a case of an old school building in a city with old infrastructure, not an example of the failures of the Jersey City School District.

Conclusions:

- The level of lead from the worst water source at P.S. 5 is high, but not really THAT high, especially if it comes out of a sink, rather than a drinking fountain. Parents should be pressing to learn more but don't have to panic.

- To be prudent, the district should order lead tests for the kids at P.S. 5.

- To be prudent, the school should install a filtration system that reduces the level of lead below 10 parts per billion, or else switch to bottled water.

- No matter what is or isn't in the drinking water at P.S. 5, the school is right under the turnpike and right by a bunch of active construction zones. The district really ought to pay to test a random sample of kids for exposure to a wide range of pollutants every year, and to make the tests available for a fee for parents who are willing to pay for the tests, then order schoolwide testing if some kids in the small sample turn out to have problems.

Personally, I find it's really hard to get doctors to prescribe contamination tests, even if I'm willing to pay for the tests out of pocket. I think it would be extremely helpful if the district would arrange for the tests.
