This is the right thing to do, finally. This gem should never be handed over entirely to a corporate entertainment monopoly. Rather it needs to be established a non-profit performing arts center akin to NJPAC or BergenPAC in its org structure. Get a real staff in there that will run it right and still partner with FOL (not saying they should be in total control). A PAC format would allow for profitable bookings yet still keep an arts and community focus also.

I would have preferred the for-profit bookings, to be honest. Dedicate 20 percent of time to local arts and the rest to some headline events, as long as it's being put to productive use, which is not true of the current situation. I'm happy FOL saved the building and we should always be in their debt, but is anyone really happy with how it's currently being operated?

"Nothing" except exactly what I said (from the FAQ on ASI's website):

"Can I refuse entry to the field inspector?

Yes, you may refuse entry to your home, but is in your best interest to see that as much information as possible is gathered to help insure an accurate assessment. If an appraiser cannot inspect the inside of a building, it's possible an inaccurate assessment may result. The law provides that a property can be assessed at the highest reasonable value if the field inspector is denied entry.

The revaluation program should not be seen as an adversarial situation. Property owners have a vested interest in the outcome of the project and their cooperation is vital to achieve an equitable revaluation. If one person's property is under-assessed, all the other property owners in the municipality will pay higher taxes to make up for the discrepancy. Conversely, if property owners deny access to the field inspector they could wind up being over-assessed and pay more than their fair share of taxes."

I have no idea why you're so angry about this. It's common sense that if you're trying to get accurate data about every property in the city, and you have some properties about which you still have questions, you need to assume best-case scenario on those properties. In that case, owners who think you got it wrong in their case (they've been over-assessed) will willingly give you that information, improving the quality of your data. If you err on the side of under-assessing, owners who know you made a mistake (they've been under-assessed) will likely not tell you.

Ok, you are right, and I'm sorry about my prior post. There's just so much bad info out there, that it's tough to sort through the bull sometimes, but that's no excuse in this situation.

Can you post a link to this Q&A? There's so much misinformation and disinformation out there, so I want to read that for myself on a reputable site.

I was referring mostly to the in-person Q&As that were held with ASI throughout the city in April. Civic Parent has a good recap of the Ward A one here: https://civicparent.org/news/jersey-ci ... tion-meetings-highlights/

There's also a JC-specific landing page on ASI's site (and their FAQ pages have a lot of useful info as well): http://asinj.com/revaluation.asp?p=current&id=359

ETA: ASI's site lists one more upcoming presentation at Lincoln High on 6/29 from 7:30PM - 8:30PM.

And what basis do you have to make that statement? If it's a condo, there are likely identical condos in the same building. The appraised value could be very well equal to the other similar or identical units.

Contrary to popular belief, it's not like the old days and the inspectors can just make up a number. There is so much eyes on this recap, do you really think an inspector is going to inflate a number to get back at a homeowner that didn't let them in? If anything, they should be leaving thank you notes as it makes their job easier relying on public records instead of personally inspecting.

Great, do I have a deal for you! I'll buy your house for what you paid for it and rent it to you indefinitely for what your current monthly expenses are. You get what you want, no increased expenses and no appreciation.

The cost, time, inconvenience, and frustration of getting to LaGuardia is pegged at about $75, one way. So a flight out of Newark would have to be more than $150 than LaGuardia for it to be worth it to me.

I saw NYC Airporter bus at Journal Square once, but there is no other information online. I assume this heads to Newark?

How is anyone surprised by this? It's the story of America, the bigger you get the more influence you buy.

Ultimately anyone will be able to look up Dixon properties and see if they are paying their fair share post-reval. They should be on the higher end anywhere since they do above average renovations.

They may be able to kick the can on taxes, but I really don't see how they can dodge the Reval... If they do dodge it, then show up at City Hall with pitchforks...

They're not dogging anything. Just some disgruntled city hall employee or political operative trying to slander.

First it was Dixon applying for an abatement to shield from the reval, per the original post. When pointed out it's perfectly legal and automatic for a major rehab to receive an abatement, the story changed and suggest Dixon is NOT applying for the automatic abatement so it can keep its assessment low... until the reval. Lol

Home rule leads to all sorts of shady things. Tax assessment shouod be done on the county level with a rolling reval at least every five years.

You're such a loser. As has been mentioned, major rehabs are automatically eligible for a 5 year abatement. It has nothing to do with Dixon or city council.

BTW, if anyone from Dixon is reading this, please buy up some of the abandoned properties in my neighborhood in the Heights to convert into 2,3, or 4-family homes. I'm tried of the blight, and it sounds like you guys know hoe to get the job done. Great jobs guys.

Um, might want to re-think that request. Dixon owns about 6-7 houses on my block alone in DTJC. Two of them they purchased 2 years ago and they've been sitting empty ever since. Don't know if they plan to refurb them or sell them as-is, but probably the former. Dixon is usually the last to shovel during the winter and when they are doing refurb work they pay zero attention to the noise they make, starting early (like 7:00) and sometimes all weekend. As neighbors go, pretty obnoxious...

Thank for the info - in the case, nevermind.

Last time we ended up going 78 all the way South through Bayonne, instead of taking 1&9 (no toll, less distance).

Enjoy Uber while it lasts. IMO, drivers don't make enough to cover the depreciation on their cars. I think many drivers will realize this once major wear-n-tear expenses start to pile up (new brakes, new rotors, engine mounts, oxygen sensors, clutch, tires, etc.).

I agree - but the ride sharing concept isn't going away. Prices will one day rise.

Right now the drivers are being taken advantage of and don't even know it.

Why do we accept that it will take this long for Parking to get its act together?!? MAKE THEM, COUNCIL! It shouldn't take more than 6 months TOPS fore them to be able to effectively launch this. This delay is utter crap. Director Paretti needs to actually do some work for that sweet 6 figure salary.

#2
"A $15 annual permit for residents will allow them to park in the zone 24 hours a day."

Expanded services at virtually FREE rates? That price is stupid and needs to be increased. Some would say substantially or to market rate. I would say $30-$50/year makes sense - that's still a giant bargain. How does this city expect to pay for better services like expanded enforcement - which we desperately need citywide - at these 1970's prices?!?

On the second half, people are way too stupid to be able to handle moving from one car to another to exit.

That's the point of open gangway cars. Its basically just one giant car. They can be enginnered to handle any curve the current trains handle.
