Yes, they do accept donations of books.

You will also be able to ?bring a book ? take a book? at city?s book fair to be held in VVP Sept. 13th (much more info to follow).

Local authors should contact Cultural Affairs if you want to participate in this event.

If they didn't do this than people/victims could just make stuff up to cover another crime or to set-up an innocent person.
What I don?t understand is that when the police finally showed, the two witnesses went over to talk to them and were sent away while they talked to the victim. The police never took a statement from the individuals who saw the mob and called 911.

For our family, 23 years in JC (out of Manhattan), the place was Kiki?s on Second St.
It?s taken 20 years to match the quality, price, service, and atmosphere of this restaurant.
They got caught up in the economics of the ?87 reval, tried to adjust by adding a liquor license and music, and wound up losing their original customers with not enough support from the change? We miss them, though we do finally have alternatives

In a sense I guess your right though, if you are beaten into a coma you dont really have to worry about guilt.

Also if you think the governement is designed to protect you and save you life in these types of situations, you might be in for a rude awakening. Attacks like this are usually over in 2-3 minutes at the most. Unless you have police on every street corner the police cannot protect us.

Not to mention this police force of under 1000 offiicers city wide would be completely outmanned if we were to face a riot type situation. You would be on your own for atleast 5 days while corzine decided (from his beachouse) to activate the national guard.

Not that I?ve haven?t had the fantasy of being able to ?eliminate? the individuals or groups that have no respect for life, others property, or common decently? I can?t justify the liability and possible ?oops" factor of vigilante justice. One should, in my opinion, strive for a set of laws and enforcement that eliminate the option of anarchy and its negative consequences.

I didn't want to raise the obvious, so thank you for doing so. Rather than allow properly vetted law abiding citizens their human right to effective self defense our politicians would rather cater to the ignorance of much of the populace.

Said ignorance largely springs from a utopian misunderstanding of human nature. Most of this comes down to an overweening faith in government authority and that being law abiding oneself means that laws prohibiting firearms ownership will eliminate firearms; rather than make criminality safer.

If this poor guy had been packing the most likely outcome would have been that the mob would have fled and he would have got home safely.

If the police arrived in 5-7 minutes they might have caught these jokers but it wouldnt have stopped the beating.

NJ needs to wake up and join the other 40 or so states to allow law biding citizens the right to carry.

The police cannot protect every citizen. No police dept in the world can.

I usually don?t engage in a discourse on the ?right to bear arms?, but to posit that carrying a weapon in an urban setting is the correct choice over holding our paid law enforcers libel and responsible for our collective safety, is irresponsible and retrogressive.

Although it may seem like we are sometimes living in the Wild West, the perceived ?right to blow someone?s head off? because you are a ?law abiding citizen? does not, in my opinion, justify the override a set of moral parameters that set us apart from other animals.

The fantasy of being able to act out a Charles Bronson ?Death Wish? movie, in reality, would make most ?law abiding citizens? and moral people having to deal with immeasurable guilt for the rest of their lives.

I think the resolution lies with a strong commitment from a community that understands the value of strength in numbers and is willing to join together and not just continually complain about its predicament, but actively and forcefully engages the government that is set up to protect them.

Discourse over,

Also, there is no reason to doubt that they are from this area. The kids are in the park all the time.

Last but not least, was there no one else in the park to witness this? What about the guy with the dark suit who seems to be living in the park? I see him there morning noon and night. Maybe he saw something.

Sorry to be all over the place with this post -- it just makes me so angry and disappointed and freaked out.
I don?t know the exact cost of each camera, but I do know that Kearny received sufficient funds from Homeland Security to purchase a wireless camera system that covers all of their public parks. Even if our community would cover the cost of the system, the city would have to agree to monitor it or additional funds would be necessary to cover that cost.

My neighbor?s son and his friend were the ones that got the gang to stop beating the victim and they also called the police once they saw what was happening. Why it took the police 25 minutes to show up has not been explained.

I was there when the ambulance finally arrived, 17 minutes after the call and saw the victim able to walk to the vehicle with help from the paramedics. Two police cars finally showed up 10 minutes later. Had they been able to respond immediately, they would have caught a least some of these hoodlums.

As far as our new park resident (?The Man in The Black Suit?) is concerned, he is well dressed and well spoken but I have to keep asking him to periodically move to a new spot on the lawn because he is leaving an imprint similar to a police outline everywhere he sleeps. His residency is now three weeks and counting but other than being a threat to the grass he seems harmless and rather sad.

The camera is my attempt to catch our ?famous graffiti idiot?, not to monitor dog walkers.

I?ve been asking the city to install cameras for years and keep being told the monies are not available. The reduction in crime, both major and minor from strategically placed monitors would more than justify their initial expense and provide some peace of mind for the community.

Assault in Van Vorst Park tonight
Home away from home
Home away from home

At about 11:00pm tonight, a group of approximately 10 teens including 3 girls viciously beat and kicked a young Bayonne man looking for the light rail, almost to death in Van Vorst Park.

Neighbors witnessing the beating chased them away and called the police immediately?an ambulance showed up 15 minutes later followed by the police 17 minutes after that. The neighbors said the group of assailants were wearing white t-shirts.

Please be vigilant.

My sister-in-law just purchased in the Sutton building and I can tell you the insulation, especially the windows, prevent most of the ambient noise. I was in her apartment when a full construction crew was working on the building directly opposite her unit?you wouldn?t have known until you opened the window.

And as to poyc?s question, if you were pre-qualified, 5% would not be an unreasonable counter offer. There?s also no harm in asking for 7% and winding up at 5.

It makes the builidng look like some modern day public works project. If the builder would "choose" to that to the outside of his builidng I can't imagine what he has done to the inside. But in the end, it come s down to the city. Developers have proven time and time again that they don't care about this city, they just want to make as much money as they can. The city allowed them to use those orrible bricks on their extension because they don't care either. As citizens, I guess we should count ourselves lucky that they didn't use the pink bricks that have shown up here in recent years.
I think you are confusing the Whitlock project on Lafayette St, which is not the greatest looking renovation, with the old National Carpet building on Grand St. The carpet building use to look like a white elephant and now is one of the most beautiful restorations I?ve seen in JC. Check the link in the first post to see a picture.

They have had a full crew working on the site for the last 6 months and are hoping to start renting by early fall. The only building without brick facing is the one on Manning Ave. They still have to pave the rest of the development, and tie the new units into the sewer system. I sure hope they complete this project this time.

I'm sure there is a legal/technical answer but I would assume it has something to do with the fact that VVP is just one city block long and LSP is acres and acres and acres, with a dedicated grilling area. Makes sense to me.
Here?s the legal answer, check out the following on the JC Municipal code.

Sorry, open flames of any kind (I will resist) are prohibited in all public parks. You are welcome to have picnics at the table in the southwest corner (with a reasonable guest limit without having to pull a permit) . However, the city does not permit forest fires (e.g. see California at the moment); especially if you are ?Armed and DWI?.

Steve,

What I?d like know is, why aren?t the developers, who continue to get generous tax abatements, required because of those abatements, to repave the roads (i.e. Grand) they are digging up to run new lines for their properties. Why should it come out of our budget?

I do, though, wonder why Christopher Columbus is not on the list.

Columbus was touted by the city as the main artery to get traffic from the Turnpike to the waterfront. It is in such bad shape, however, that I think that people likely avoid it as much as possible. I know when we exit the turn pike, we get off of Columbus as soon as possible simply due to the condition of the roadway.

If people are indeed avoiding Columbus, that means they are driving on the smaller surface roads and into the residential neighborhoods. I cannot believe that this is faster, but it sure is less stress on a vehicle.

Any chance Columbus will be done sooner than later?

I asked the head of Public Works the same question about Christopher Columbus last month and was told the holdup for repaving was due to the path train being directly below that roadway. He said they were only allowed to patch not replace the surface due to the possible consequences from vibrations from the milling machines. Makes no sense to me but that?s what he said.

Re: Lafayette Park Communipaw Neighborhood

I?ve had my business on lower Communipaw for 23 years and the area is still a work in progress. If you like being a pioneer, it?s possible to buy or rent a large space for 1/3 the cost of downtown. I?ve felt safe there for the last 15 years, but as with any area you must be street smart.

Webb park (on Lafayette) was renovated two years ago, the 300 unit Whitlock Cordage residential complex should be completed this summer, the city is getting ready to build a massive recreational facility on Garfield off of Communipaw, and a number of brownstones have been purchased by young entrepreneurs.

In a few years this area will appreciate but certainly not like downtown; moving there is a matter of your risk level.

Re: Van Vorst Park---Dog Run

Home away from home

This weekend marks the One Year Anniversary of the official opening of the Van Vorst Park Dog Run.

We will be celebrating from 9 AM - 3 PM this Saturday, May 3rd.
Please join us. We will have raffles, dogs for adoption,
information on the run, and other pet-related issues in Jersey City.

A table will be set up for all those who wish to promote pet related items, services, or events; we just ask that you spend some time helping to staff the table and donate a little to help out with maintenance of the run.

Canis Minor (31 River Dr. in Newport), will give all those who mention the VVP run 10% off all items in the store from May 3rd to the 9th. The store will donate 10% of all those sales to the run and will also provide two $100 gift baskets that will to be raffled off at the run on May 3rd.

May 3rd will also be the day we do some housekeeping around and in the run; raking, painting, and sweeping.

Please come out, meet your fellow animal lovers and their four-legged companions, and help with this community maintained dog run.

For all those who use the Van Vorst Park dog run, you may notice that we are out of the waste bags you have been so accustomed to for the past year. These bags are provided by individual donations and we go through 400 of them a week at a cost of $790 per year.

If you would like to have this convenience continue, please send a check* to:

Friends of Van Vorst Park
C/o Marc Wesson
430 Communipaw Ave.
Jersey City, NJ. 07304
*please add? VVP dog run? in the memo

$200 covers three months for both runs, however any amount would be much appreciated.

For those who do not know, volunteers from the neighborhood primarily maintain this run. Hundreds of dog owners use it each month; please participate in its upkeep.

Hope you have been enjoying this new addition in VVP during its first year. Also, within the next month you will see additional improvements.

For the best, try Il Mulino on West Third Street. It usually requires a three week prior reservation for dinner or try lunch for less of a timeframe. It is Northern Italian at its best. Don?t eat the day you go, the portions are huge; not cheap but a meal you won?t forget.

I guess it?s time to address your provocative and distorted sense of reality.

On any given day you can walk through either Van Vorst or Hamilton Park and find many examples of irresponsible dog owners who fail to clean up after their pets. Even within the VVP dog run you will find enough evidence that this is true. When we went to do maintenance on the run three weeks ago, the first 20 minutes was used to remove waste left by owners that were not aware of what their pets were doing.

No mater how responsible you feel as a dog owner, if you are not in control or aware of your pet at all times, you have no idea what they are doing. This applies not only to waste but also to the safety of others.

Your kind of attitude impacts those that obey the current laws and will eventually result in more stringent rules with greater penalties.

?LIARS? we are not.
