You might want to revise that. West of Marin got hammered by the surge. Almost all of Grand and York up to VV Park was under. Mercer, Montgomery and York were all completely under beyond Grove St. The PAD area was completely under. By "under" I mean upwards of 6 feet. Elevation does not increase the further you get from the water. There are several spots, like Washington & Grand, that are at a much higher elevation than Montgomery and Marin. For example, here's your City Hall parking lot at about 11:30. This was not the highest the water would rise that night. Also keep in mind, that parking lot is elevated above the surrounding streets by 1 - 2 feet. This flood water extended well beyond Marin and CC Blvd.

I think there is a correlation between the time taken to report the crime and the degree which we trust the integrity of the story. I don't think anyone here would have doubt in the story if the woman cried for help when it happened. The doubt comes from the delay (the shame) of going about 10 minutes and several stops before taking action. I'm not saying this is the correct way to look at this story.

Chromium removal at Metropolis towers to begin soon

While most of the chromium-cleanup talks have centered around the site on Garfield Ave., there are other, albeit much smaller, contaminated sites that need remediation. One exists at the Metropolis Towers on the corner of Christoper Columbus, Marin and Montgomery.
This site was contaminated when chromium-mixed soil was used as fill. Quote: 1964 In 2009, it was reported that there was chromium only under the western-most parking lot and under the now-demolished third building, which is currently just a fenced-off concrete slab: Quote: Hexavalent chromium concentrations exceeding soil cleanup criteria have been detected in the soil beneath parking areas and recently demolished buildings. Hexavalent chromium has not been detected beneath the residential towers. One of five monitoring wells has detected total chromium concentrations in excess of groundwater quality standards. http://www.chromecleanup.com/flash/pdfs/jc/Site156.pdf Then, yesterday, NJ.com reports: Quote: After the Oct. 29 storm, officials discovered a ?small patch? of cancer-causing hexavalent chromium in the basement boiler room of Metropolis Towers? Building 2, said Brian McPeak, project manager for the cleanup. http://www.nj.com/hudson/index.ssf/20 ... emoval_at_jersey_cit.html Chromium inside the building! Whoops! Cleanup plans are still underway, although Sandy did put the Metropolis cleanup behind schedule: Quote: An effort to remove chromium-laced soil from the Metropolis Towers site in Downtown Jersey City is expected to begin within weeks and last for a little more than a year NJDEP, Jersey City, and PPG have created the Chromium Cleanup Partnership for questions and concerns and... Quote:
http://www.chromecleanup.com/ Please know that this is not just another construction project. The area around Marin & Christoper Columbus is like a wind tunnel. Know what's in the air you're breathing. Ask questions, stay informed, etc etc....

From the photographs I've seen, the tracks slowly sloped down to a level grade with the street, somewhere after the Grove St. PATH. If the tracks were still there, that would all be dead space. Also, because of the tracks, CC Blvd is unusually wide. Just after the tracks were taken down, cars would park on that street head-first. Even with larger 70's cars, there was still plenty of room for two lanes of traffic.

I believe the only major chromium site in the heart of DTJC is under the parking lot of the two housing towers (Metropolis?) behind City Hall. Phase one of remediation is currently under way for that cleanup. Regardless -- I think your point still stands. It may have been cleaned, but by living on top of those sites, you're putting a lot of trust in someone else's word. Quote:
Probably. The area around 18 Park has been elevated significantly by landfill. Marin Blvd beyond the light rail received about 8-10 feet of fill, bringing that street that may more feet above sea level. If you stand at the site of 18 Park and look down Marin towards City Hall, you're looking down hill now. So -- 18 Park may be high and dry, but the surrounding area is still prone to flooding.

Anything bad that's happened to me in JC has somehow been tied to this lot.
Bought a new car after I lost mine after Sandy. Parked in the lot, came back from BB&B and watched as a moronic woman too lazy to put her shopping cart back in to the caddy roll it right in to my back bumper. Her car was about three spots down. I completely laced in to her. It's morons like that who make a shitty parking lot completely unbearable. By the way, I only enter/exit on the Washington Blvd side. That's the secret to sanity in that place.

Wrong. A noise violation is handled by the local police. Animal Control does not enforce local ordinances unless it pertains to unlicensed animals (which is something the original poster mentioned that has absolutely nothing to do with his noise problem). A rabid animal is handled by animal control. A barking dog is handled by the police. A loose zebra is handled by animal control. A loud stereo is handled by the police. A dog that bites is handled by animal control. A party in your neighbor's backyard at 3am is handled by the police. Get the pattern here? A police officer will often escort an animal control officer on a call, but an animal control officer does not have to respond to a a noise complaint -- even if that noise is generated by an animal.

Are you complaining about a barking dog or an unlicensed dog? A dog with a licence doesn't bark less than an unlicensed dog. What is the relation between the two that you're trying to point out? I'm confused. A noise complaint is handled by the police. A malnourished animal is handled by Animal Control. Neither are likely to bust down your neighbor's door while they're on vacation because the dog is barking.

Re: Pulaski Skyway to close for 2 years after Super Bowl:
|
||||
---|---|---|---|---|

The Pulaski Skyway is one of the worst bridges in the United States -- and it has been that way since the day it opened.
First, it was built to get truck traffic off the city streets (the route that resembles today's 1&9 Truck). However, the United States Navy forced the engineers to increase the clearance over the Passaic and Hackensack rivers at the last minute, creating a very steep incline leading up to the two bridges that has prohibited truck traffic from using the bridge from day #1. Second, it was designed in the early 30s, before anyone knew anything about highways and ramps were placed on the left, creating one of the most dangerous driving situations in New Jersey. Third, its truss system closely resembles that of the failed bridge that killed a dozen people and injured another 200 in Minneapolis. Driving the Skyway is like playing a game of russian roulette. Remember that the next time you drive across. ================================= Edit: If a auto-bridge connecting Liberty State Park to Jersey Ave is completed before this project, imagine the clusterfuck at exit 14B and into Downtown JC.

It's open. Check it out.
Staff is really friendly. Crepes are all $6.99 and are enough for two to split for dessert. Crepes come with a scoop of ice cream, which is fine in the winter because the crepes are warm. Crepes are made right in front of you. Served in a metal to-go tin, which is fine, but if you're eating in it would be nice to have a plate. They're all dessert crepes, which is my only complaint. Some veggies, eggs, cheese .. would all keep me coming back for more than a sugar fix.

A 96 year old guy, I can understand. The elderly are easy prey. But anyone else has no excuse.
Why would anyone take goods or services from a random person -- in a parking lot of all places. I remember being asked to buy a set of speakers by some guys out of a white van in Linden, even though that is one of the oldest tricks in the book. I told the guys to go #OOPS# themselves.

These are all clear indications to me that something is amiss!
