Re: Worst place to live in Hudson County?
Home away from home
Home away from home

i'd much rather live in newark than irvington. i think when people take these polls they generalize what town sounds bad based on the media and go from there.

i lived in belleville for a few months and we had more hobos begging for change outside of my apartment door and then the eventual breakins than you can imagine were very comforting, yet i spent nearly 3 years staying overnight on and off in newark and never had an issue with being followed there or having my car broken into. i know a lot of brooklynites that have moved to the ironbound and university areas and have no issues. i feel that jersey city has the same issues with areas that are high volume in crime and others that are just desolate and working class people who stay in after work.

there are some beautiful houses here and a lot of great places and things to do if people are willing to look for them and be street smart, but then again anyone that lives here will know that and doesn't care about what the star ledger has to say about our community.

I took the ACO certification course in October 2009 and to be quite honest, the instructors themselves said that the material has changed very little since 1983, and only again in 1997 (when the Animal Cruelty Investigator certification came out.) The only updated information we got was amendments to statutes (very few of those) and statistics based on year to year. Other than that, it was all the same.

They obviously teach you humane methods of picking up animals, but there is nothing revolutionary in the past 10+ years about picking up animals whether it be on snare poles or have a heart traps. The same methods have been used for years and continue to be used. Most of the equipment used is for the humane entrapment of animals and for the safety of the ACO and the facility the animal is being taken to.

The other important thing they teach at the course is being professional, courteous, and responsible in handling matters. If JC Animal Control were to add to their staff some newly certified officers with animal handling experience and compassion for the field who really want the job, they could then work on rebuilding their credibility.

There are people in this city who actually WANT to work for animal control.

i have also handed people bags and told them "you are what you don't pick up."

that went over really well with the old lady in lincoln park who looked at me like i was some menace because i was walking a pit bull and a boston terrier near her precious yorkie. some example she showed because her little pride and joy pooped on the ground and she walked away from it. i picked up the poop and bagged it and handed it back to her.

no public garbage cans is no excuse!

aside from being a professional dog walker (and sometimes having to tote the poop with me for longer than several blocks, try taking it back into the car with me until i find a trash can,) i live on 4th and erie and if my dog poops while we're out walking and i can't find a can, i pick it up and bring it back to the trash cans in front of my building. there are plenty of residential garbage cans in front of these houses, i highly doubt someone (aside from my neighbors) will complain that someone is disposing of dog waste in their garbage cans as opposed to leaving it for them to step in. i've even at times run out of bags and picked up something off the street to pick up the poop. it's better to have to wash your hands than have to face a fine or someone posting your photos all over the internet.

My neighbors have a handicapped spot in front of their house. The plates and the place card don't match the numbers on the sign. Where do I report this?

Re: McGinley Square
Home away from home
Home away from home

i lived on summit between academy and vroom from november 08-dec 09 and it was a tough area. my car got broken into in january 09 and they rummaged through my stuff. i would get called names while walking my dog at night, constantly had people pissing on my porch, and the block is just busy. people walk summit avenue all night long. i'd go for a side street over a busy main street (there's only parking on one side of summit, and the lots off of academy st. are kind of grimey.)

the plus side to the neighborhood is the convenience of being a really short distance from journal square and downtown, and also the 24 hour stores nearby (walgreens, rite aid, now 7-11, and others)

i also went to high school at st dominic academy on duncan and jfk, so for years i walked through the neighborhood on a daily basis and it has made some good changes, but there is still much of the bad element which won't just go away no matter how many buildings get turned into condos.

the walk to the path in the morning should be relatively safe - a lot of other commuters and the catholic high school kids getting around. the walk home probably won't be so bad either. after 11pm, just be cautious and aware of your surroundings.

the astor bar is relatively close to both locations, good pizza, somewhat political type crowd (cops, firemen, city employees, etc.)

i do miss mcginley square a lot despite the tough spots. i just moved downtown and while i am really enjoying this neighborhood, i miss having a yard and some of the local businesses.

I have to disagree. The majority of my furniture and decorative pieces are from the late 20's early 30's and I didn't even have to have them refurbished. Clothes, hats, purses, and furs have survived, they do need to be treated well, but are generally VERY interesting and elegant when they are. Jewelry, even not made of gold and silver, are around and just need to be cleaned and any stones, etc. replaced. Back in the days when I had a slimmer figure I often wore dresses from the 30's and 40's.

good point - i have all these great pieces just sitting in my closet with only a couple of wears, maybe i should just try more often! the clothes from that period fit me so, so much better than anything i can buy at the store a good vintage store (but is a bit of a drive) is time after time in madison, nj.

i've seen mary's furniture first hand...beautiful pieces!

Maybe we should euthanize all minorities and families of criminals too because they may also be a potential threat to society based on stigma and statistics?

I'd love to see every person that encourages euthanasia and breed specific legislation to actually sit down and perform euthanasia themselves (not by just watching a vet, it's not even close.) I highly doubt most of you could handle it.

benji is a reddish tan and white jack russell mix. there are flyers posted all over downtown with his photo on them. he has a high prey drive for squirrels, so it's more than likely he snuck out and went for a squirrel. he's neutered, but not microchipped. i believe the owners said his collar was not on when he ran out the door.

I must say the Beacon's floors/walls are probably the shiniest and most well kept I have ever seen. I almost feel like I'm committing a mortal sin walking dogs through the first floor when the downstairs carpet is being cleaned!

For appearance, The Beacon wins, but for layout/space, Canco Lofts would be my choice as of now if I had the money to buy.

BTW James emailed me and explained why my PMs are blocked. Makes sense since it sounds like the site probably got hit with a lot of bots and spam.

though i am not a resident of the building, i do know many people in the building (dog walking clients and people i meet on my daily trips over there) and used to post every so often on the forum. my account was banned from sending private messages for no reason. i've never solicited anyone from the beacon, and i don't solicit people for dog walking work anywhere.

1998!?

i can still remember walking home from st. doms back then being asked to "run my pockets." i'll take the safer streets and newcomers (yuppies and hipsters if you may) any day over the old trash that once sat on my street corner selling drugs, pissing in peoples alleyways or between cars, and waiting to steal my bike or "jump" my friends on the way home from school.

most of my childhood friends have left because their parents took them to the suburbs to grow up. my dad was on the jcpd so we stayed. i'm glad we did as i would not be the person i am if we had picked up and moved away. i like jersey city, i just know what areas to stay away from when the sun goes down.

Re: KIOSK BADGERING AT NEWPORT MALL

i still get harassed by those hand/face cream folks whenever i go up to the livingston mall...haven't been bothered by them at newport lately, but they are one in the same. they find ways to suck you in and make you feel obligated to buy something from them because they gave you a free sample of something you don't even need, or to just get them to leave you alone! i love the "today only special" at swisa beauty's stand in livingstong....special is $120+ for hand cream, dead sea salt scrub (which they say is fantastic for eczema but found out it only made it worse), and a manicure/pedicure set that you can buy at sephora for under 10 bux. lame. i bought the sea salt scrub on ebay for $6.00 two years ago. they want $40+ at the stands. they don't like when i tell them i can buy their crap on ebay for cheaper.

Re: Woman bitten by large dog in Van Vorst Park 9/11//09

Despite the unlikeliness that this dog has Rabies, there is a high possibility that the wound can result in infection, so a trip to the hospital, a dose of IV antibiotics, and pills to take for at least 10 days is usually normal routine. Rabies medication in that case is just a preventative. You'd be surprised how many people have their dogs vaccinated when they first get them, but don't keep them up to date with yearly vaccinations and Rabies boosters. There are low cost options out there, but unfortunately a lot of people don't know about the importance of keeping their animals up to date, no matter how well kept their dogs appear to be. Infection can happen just from any puncture wound. I wouldn't call it being dramatic to go to the hospital for a puncture wound like that, just cautious and smart.

As a dog walker I always require my clients to show their vaccination records and tags whether or not the dogs wear them on a daily basis. It's just a cautious effort at best. As a dog owner, I try my best to keep people from interacting with my dog and my clients dogs while walking. I feel for any person who's been attacked by a dog as I've been attacked by a lot of dogs in the past unprovoked, but it is something that happens and the owner of the dog should have been responsible and come back or at least given some sort of contact information so that their dog could be quarantined and proper procedures could be followed. Hopefully someone will come forward at least.
