Very sad. If you walk around and pay attention, you'll be struck by the huge number of churches downtown - and by their size and the fact that they each housed large, active congregations in their day. And in a post-Veterans Day vein, take note of the plaques listing the members who served and died in WWI and WWII; dozens from each church.

We live in a very different world.

I think it's illegal under federal law. The LIRR isn't federally regulated because it doesn't cross state lines.

I think that's correct. It would also explain why the MTA is allowed to have a limited number of subway cars that can access the South Ferry station (I mean the old/reused station, not the one that was destroyed by Sandy).

The new signaling system will supposedly increase capacity by 50,000 riders/day. That may sound small considering all the new development, but keep in mind that not everyone uses the PATH, and that ferry and bus options will probably increase as private companies see more opportunity.

And yeah, I know, the PA will probably find a way to mess this up anyway.

Yeah, the state has lots of unfunded liability, but the Green Acres program is one of the few NJ initiatives that has produced real, verifiable, long-term results in the form of preserved open space. I'm not buying the argument that this increase to the business tax will keep a lot of companies from investing here. Our proximity to NY and Philly will always make NJ attractive...Goldman Sachs isn't going to flee to Arkansas anytime soon.

My guess is that ridership and service was higher during what is now off-peak and rush hours may have extended into the weekend.
Also, in the days before commercial airlines and interstate highways, I would think the "Tubes" were the connector for the several railroads that did not connect to Penn Station. Also, I don't believe the Holland Tunnel was open until the late 1920's.

I think that's just about right. The H&M higher ridership included a lot of travelers heading to railroad connections and people going from one side of JC to the other.

They are still co-ops, and the original purchasers were the renters who were there originally, way back when. I believe the management company now owns a large number of them - I'm not entirely sure how that came about, but I'll bet Yvonne does. If it's like most co-ops, owners would own a fraction of the total property based on the size of the apartment. Once the parking lots get developed, I imagine some of those people are going to be pretty wealthy.

I'm with you. If the attendant saw that they had black hair, he probably saw if they were African-American. It's not racist to state a fact. The robbers being African American (IF THEY WERE) doesn't imply that all African Americans are robbers.

I must have missed biology class that day, so forgive my ignorance, but don't cats reproduce a lot more prolifically than dogs? I'm thinking that's the argument for TNR - to keep down the sheer volume of cats. I could be off base on this, so don't jump all over me.

I'm not a pit-bull hater (or pit mixes, staffordshire terriers, whatever you want to call them). I've found them to be really affectionate and smart. I've fostered them at my home, like these people might have been doing. But would I have one in a home with an 8-year-old? Nope, I wouldn't. These are really powerful dogs. They don't belong around kids. I know not everybody agrees, but I wouldn't do it. Glad the little girl will recover.

I know I'm in a tiny minority here - and I mean no disrespect to the artists and their talent - but I'm not crazy about these murals everywhere. Just to confirm that I wasn't being a cranky old geezer, I checked with my 27-year-old daughter (who has a Ph.D in art history, so she know her art, yo). While she appreciated the work, she thought it a bit ghetto. Is that what we're going for here?

No there isnt in dtjc. Sorry you still have to live there.

And you pretty much confirmed every "exaggerated" claim i stated.

I don't live there, but I'm also not basing my conclusion on your outdated experiences from when you lived there. The doormen (or "doormans", as you call them). are very pleasant when I've visited. The carpet on my friend's floor is pretty decent. And I've never seen a bug. Are you that unwilling to believe that things ever improve?

Anyway, for those who think the city has nothing better to focus on than relieving us of seeing some ugly buildings... I'm pretty sure the owners of Metroplois understand the gold mine they're sitting on; they really don't need the city to exercise eminent domain. Let the market do its work, fellow capitalists.

Re: Eminent Domain on Metropolis Towers

I'm rarely stupefied by anything I read on here. You, sir, have managed to do it. As a bunch of people have pointed out, the buildings are a lot older than 15 years. If you've bothered to look at them, you'd know that. And your argument just goes downhill from there.

As for what they're like inside...the previous poster really exaggerates, or maybe things have taken a turn for the better. Yes, the buildings are dated. Yes, many of the residents enjoy curry. But the management addresses repairs pretty promptly, and exterminators service the building every month. Given that it has fairly reasonable rents and killer views, there are lots of worse places.

And the parking lots...if you paid attention, you'd know that they just completed a huge chromium mitigation project. That was the first step in a redevelopment of the lots. So, relax. You'll have your overpriced pet-food stores and soulless bars on that property soon.

What can I say? I feel your pain! I try to follow a pescatarian diet, and I just don't feel like we have any good fish options in town. Several people here have said that Shoprite is decent for fish, but I rue my every visit there, so I just get my fish needs fulfilled at WF (in Tribeca on my way home, or Millburn on weekends) and sometimes get some of the frozen stuff from TJs. We definitely need a decent fishmonger in town. A business like that would do some serious business by virtue of being the only one.

About the PH elementary, I have heard great things about it. I don't have any elementary school aged kids, but it is good to know for when people ask. But, I do have question (thread hijack alert...): I had heard that some kids were no longer guaranteed a spot there due to overcrowding. Is that not true? Or, perhaps no longer the case? IIRC, kids that were sent elsewhere only had to do that for a year. Any information would be great. Thanks!

yes i find shoprite to have the best quality seafood among the 3 supermarkets around here..surprisingly. But I dont like shopping there, too much pushing/yelling and always packed with people bumping into each other. I sometime goto BJs for seafood, as sad as that sounds.

With regards to ps16 school, i actually asked the exact same question and one of the school board member was nice enough to answer - PreK is lottery based but K-5th is guaranteed as long as you live in the school zone which goes up to and include 2nd street (greatschool has a good zoning map). So anything further north include newport is out of luck.

Let me understand this, you come into a thread titled whole food and complain about people discussing first world problems? This whole forum is about first world problems so what's your point? Get off your high horse.

The point is that there's a strong tendency around here to wish away the realities of where we live and reimagine it as a lower-cost Tribeca, expressing shock that everyone doesn't understand what a utopia DTJC is. If Whole Foods thinks they can make a profit here, they'll build one here. If they don't, they won't. If that's not satisfactory to anyone, they can move, establish their own store or find somewhere else to shop. Carping about how crappy Shop Rite is accomplishes nothing.

I get that the convenience of one-stop shopping is important (especially if you're carting kids), but there are some smaller shops that could be good options - Moloney's for meats. Lee's for vegetables. And isn't it better to support a local business than some corporate behemoth?

The whole point is that I shouldn't have to plan to go to Hoboken or to the City to buy groceries. Access to healthful, fresh food should not be too much to ask of a large "up and coming" urban environment.

OMG I was visiting a friend in FL and we stopped in a Publix to pick up some things. The bagger (yes, all the registers had baggers, smiling baggers!) helped us bring everything out to the car and then refused a tip. Amazingly friendly, helpful employees.

EXACTLY. It's the same at HEB: they usually have baggers (not at every aisle, though) and they have staff members available to help you bring the stuff back to your car, and will load the groceries for you, and no tipping allowed or expected. Just good ole customer service.

I have never been to an HEB, or Publix, and not be greeted with a smile from the cashier, and a warm greeting. Certainly, I have never been yelled at by an employee or cashier, which has happened to me (and I have witnessed happening to others, as well) in ShopRite. The fat troll that works in the "customer service desk" (btw, that hellhole cubicle area should be re-branded "customer purgatory and employee cursing zone") is the absolute worst. She curses under her breath all the time, and sometimes aloud, but she does it in Spanish and thinks she gets away with it.

Seriously, why is it that retail employees in this region feel it is OK to treat customers like shit??? How is it remotely acceptable for a customer-facing employee to curse or yell at a customer?

My friend, you have obviously never visited the Publix on SW 27th Ave. in Miami. Stop by there on a Saturday evening and watch the madness you'll see from both customers and employees. It's like a Latin version of Mad Max.

I don't find Shop-Rite that bad, but maybe my standards have been lowered. I've found that the employees are about as courteous as you are to them.
