The current marina is one of the ugliest, and worst maintained, parts of the park.

The new Assembly speaker keeps saying that the laws will have to go through the committee process, discuss and debate, etc. He doesn't sound like he's in a hurry.

It will take time to set up the regulatory regime. Though Scutari pointed out that the current medical dispensaries are already regulated, vetted, and could start selling relatively soon.

I thought that you were better than that. But in the end your resentment of others who did better than you puts you in the same boat.

You lied about the campaign, and lied about me. That is disgraceful.

Which is why the mayor never endorsed her.

Which is why he gave no money to her.

Which is why he did not deploy any campaign people on her behalf.

Which is why committee people, elected on the HCDO line, are allowed to campaign for whatever candidate they want.

Which is why Solomon is working with the support of Michael Yun, who seeks not an "independent" council but an opposition bloc.

Anonymous posts or unsourced assertions are not the basis for saying that Symes "seems" connected to the Mayor. She is not except in the sense that she can work more cooperatively rather than act as a "White Knight" who knows better than everyone else.

Between Symes and Solomon it is obvious who the mayor would prefer to be on the council. But the mayor knows that it would be unseemly to endorse the former General Counsel for a major real estate investment firm.

Let me make this clear -
General Counsel of real estate investment firm -> Jersey City Council ? is inappropriate and egregious from an ethical standpoint.

There are good reasons to vote for either candidate, but completely ignoring the ethical dilemma is troubling. Ms. Symes may do an excellent job on the council ? time will tell. But either way, this will set a dangerous precedent.

Completely ignoring? She resigned from her position and is going without a job to avoid conflicts of interest.

If something pertaining to Dixon came before council she should recuse herself. But Dixon generally does not have matters that go before the council. It is not a developer and has not applied for tax abatements or sought approval of redevelopment plans. Most of what Dixon has to do with government is getting permits, approvals to do work in historic districts, and the like. That does not go before council.

I'm quite confident the information I'm hearing is accurate and have no reason to doubt it.

"It's well known" is the statement when one does not actually have evidence.

Bertoli has no role with the campaign.

His relationship with Alex Habib is the same as was his relationship with you. You both helped run that campaign and worked with him.

Alex, like you, is not in the inner circle of Fulop anymore (and neither is Bertoli). But unlike some of Fulop's former allies (like the school board mafia) he didn't outright declare war on him just because he was no longer favored. So he's still able to have a conversation with Bertoli to talk about field ops and pick his brain for strategy.

You wont see any expenditure for Bertoli or anyone else on the ELEC reports, because there is none.

I expect such innuendos to be spread by people like the school board mafia who demonstrated no scruples whatsoever when attacking the other side. I expect better, but am not surprised, when Augie Torres says stuff to stir the pot even though it's not backed by anything solid. I definitely expect better, and am surprised, when you start making such accusations.

Notwithstanding Augie Torres's attempt to conjure up bogeyman, Symes has not received support from the Mayor or the city. Oh, and Bertoli is not around either.

I was asleep or I would have!

But everyone knows how this is done. A friend or someone else lets you in. The developer had nothing to do with it. And has nothing to do with it throughout Ward E. I am friends with the Oakman developers, and they are scrupulous in not telling the building residents who they think they should vote for, even though James has repeatedly used them as a pinata in his campaign, and even though nothing legally prohibits them from expressing their opinion.

One of my friends in Liberty Harbor at 9 Regent said he was voting for James after he met him when James was in the building knocking on doors unsolicited. So James knows the "get in the building and ask for forgiveness rather than permission" drill quite well.

James may outspend Rebecca. But he sure as hell won't out-work her.

Most out today are volunteers. Remember, Rebecca is being outspent 2-1. Does she have any paid help with canvassing and/or election day leaflets? I assume so, but most of it is not paid. Unlike her opponent she can't just dump tens of thousands of dollars in the race.

Re: Symes / Solomon runoff

I've seen the most recent ads by the campaigns. Rebecca's was a positive upbeat spot showing her around downtown and touting her qualifications.

James's was an excerpt from the debate moderated by Terrence McDonald of the Jersey Journal (great job Terrence). The debate was really good, and issues oriented, except one question where James tried to put Rebecca on the spot about the Operating Engineers ad. Terrence raised it so I didn't think it was out of bounds to opine on it.

Yet from a nearly 1 hour debate where the candidates showed themselves to be articulate and with good ideas, the Solomon campaign chose the one negative spot in the debate? It's like the campaign doesn't have confidence in its own candidate and vision, and feels it can only win this by tearing Symes down.

It really didn't have to be that way.

Re: Dark Money in Ward E Race

The two candidates' positions on abatements are indistinguishable. If there is a difference it is that the Symes campaign has chosen to address the issue on merits. The Solomon campaign engages in street theater tactics trying to humiliate the residents of the Trump and Oakman buildings and constantly insisting that their opponent is corrupt.

Contrasting those two campaigns, it would not surprise me in the least that a labor PAC would prefer to deal with the individual who addresses issues on the merits rather than tries to turn their members' living into a political football. All the more so when that campaign's supporters try to paint labor unions as being somehow opposed to the interests of constituents.

I note that many of the people who support Solomon also engaged in the same rhetoric when it came to teachers and their union as well. Yet they had no problem taking tens of thousands of dollars from hedge-fund backed PACs whose stated intent was to cripple the union.

A campaign that portrays itself as progressive should not be attacking unions. And saying "We're doing it for the children" or "It's the decision of the neighborhood" doesn't give a progressive campaign a dispensation to trash workers.

No, the beating is not warranted. It's awful to suggest that.

Growing up in NYC these stories were a lot more common in the era of "Gypsy Cabs." Our cities are safer now, and companies like Uber/Lyft can provide some trackability and accountability that did not exist before. But it does underscore the concern some have with companies that work a grey market.

A lot of the taxi industry's objections to ride sharing companies may be based on rent seeking. But there are legitimate concerns to address as well.

I took that commute almost every day for about 14 years. I was on the 33rd St line so it was a bit more manageable, but yes, I've been there. I still am to a lesser degree. My commute is more flexible now so it's not as bad. But yes, I understand. I have been taking subways since I was a kid.

I'm not an engineer and wont pretend that I know the intricacies of the PATH switching system! I just think that, even if it is NYC subway level f&$&@d, the scope makes the problem different. As in, expensive but doable rather than, decades and tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars of gut renovation.

Why is it the PA can't fucking read the papers about where the MTA went off the rails and ended up with a poorly operating system? All analysis points to prioritizing sexy new projects over maintenance, updating, and expanding capacity of current infrastructure.

True. But it's not quite the same problem just because of scope. Yes, the PATH needs maintenance. But it's only a few stations.

Realistically, there is not much you can do to increase PATH capacity. Upgrading switching and train control can reduce the headways slightly. The WTC to NWK line can add a couple of more cars on with station renovations.

But unless you are going to do something really immense, like build an entire new set of tunnels to double tracks, the PATH system will be what it is.

That being the case, the question is whether we want to say "this is it, we can't expand" and just maintain and upgrade the infrastructure we have. I don't think that is prudent here. A South Newark/Airport extension would increase use and help development in Newark.

I understand concerns about the Rush Hour crunch, but airport traffic would be spread out more. The hope would be that it would justify increasing service in the off hours. For me, at least, the biggest drawback of the PATH is not that it is crowded during Rush Hour, but that service at other times, particularly on weekends, is not frequent enough.

PATH needs upgrades, and extensions will increase operating costs even after they are built. But it is not the 665 miles of 19th century infrastructure cluster$&#^ that is the MTA Subway. If the expansion can serve rider demand and help develop Newark, it should go forward.
