I have an acquaintance who is a PATH conductor. We've never talked salary, but I feel pretty confident she does not make $90K.

That's like teacher salaries. Yes, there are teachers (who have been around forever) that make 6 figures. But teachers fresh out of college are making a lot less. Same with cops.

+1. ESPECIALLY when it's at the last stop (like World Trade Center or Newark) and everyone is going to be getting up and going out anyway.

Sometimes at World Trade Center, I wish I had the guts to sarcastically shout, "Everyone, can I have your attention? It's this guy's stop. Everyone step aside and let him out first. Yes, that right, this guy is getting out here at World Trade Center."

If you need to be the first one out for some urgent reason, give up your seat and stand near (but not in front of, of course) the doors.

Re: Weirdest Street Names in JC?

As soon as I saw the subject name, I thought VROOM!

I grew up in central Jersey, and the news always said suh-caucus. When I moved up here, people made fun of how I said it wrong. Going to the source, I've been to Secaucus Municipal Court, and they say see-caucus, so I figure if that's how they say it, then that's what is right.

Now, the other street I didn't know how to pronounce when I moved up here was Tonnelle. I thought it was Tuh-nell. But I've heard enough people say tunnel-ee now, that I guess that's the answer.

I have no idea if it's true or not, but someone told me years ago that in the Japanese subways they had signs that read, in substance, "Don't be a rude American, take off your backpack in the train."

There was one on Wayne near the corner of Grove (I think), that was on the market forever.

I thought it was listed on Boyne Realty, but I don't see it on there now. So maybe it sold, or was just taken off the market. But the photos of it looked pretty cool.

Re: An Open Letter to You, My PATH Nemesis

I agree about the kids. When I was a kid, my parents always made me give my seat up to adults. Now I'm an adult, and the kids always get the seats. Why, because they've had a hard day at work? And yes, I could understand the argument that it's dangerous for them to try to stand and balance on a moving train, but half the time they end up kneeling or standing on their seat anyway, so what's the difference? Why can't they sit on the parent's lap? Or, even worse, when the parent has an empty stroller blocking the aisle, but the kid can't sit in that, he has to sit in a seat so he has a good view?

And yes, I have seen families that have enough kids to take up the whole row of seats.

My other major pet peeve, if I haven't mentioned it here already, is people who sit on the stairs at Grove St. There's one stairway, and it's busy as it is. If you really need to sit, walk down to the benches or sit on the floor. If you do this, you're just plain arrogant.

Wait - is there anything from the NY side?

I made the same mistake coming home from work at 1 a.m. this morning. The left lane was closed, and the whole time I was thinking "Should've taken the PATH." Not to mention that riding in the taxi makes me carsick.

I haven't gotten White Star in a while, but I like it.

During the winter we become burger regulars, but now that it's spring, I might go back to my salad...

I really like the one that has some kind of pasta (spaghetti or angel hair I guess) in it. My boyfriend thinks it's crazy - a green salad with pasta, but it's really good.

Hi Obama Supporters!

I recently received an email suggesting a postcard-writing party for Barack Obama. I've pasted the email below so you can get an idea what it's all about.

Here are the details for a J.C. Postcard Party for Obama. Please feel free to forward to anyone you think might be interested:

WHO: Women. (Men, feel free to donate postcards or postcard stamps, or just pass this on to your women friends.)

WHERE: LAMP POST BAR & GRILL, 382 2nd Street, Jersey City, NJ. (Closest PATH Station: Grove St.)

WHEN: Thursday, 3/27/2008, 6:30 p.m.

WHAT: We can eat, drink, and write a few postcards. See details about the postcards below.

WHY: To get out the (women's) vote in Pennsylvania.

Hope to see you all there! Please PM me to RSVP or to ask any questions!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Quote:

Dear Fellow Obama Supporters,

My name is TaLisa Sheppard and I am a member of Ohio Women for Obama and a volunteer organizer in Columbus, Ohio. Our group is calling for people across the nation to help deliver Pennsylvania for Obama by contributing to our Post Card Campaign. We want women in PA to know that they do not have to buy into the hype to vote for Hilary simply because she is a women. We want women in Pennsylvania to know that in-spite of the political pundits view, there a thousands of women across this nation who have supported Obama. This Post Card Campaign will be used strategically with local PA GOTV efforts.

Our Post Card Campaign is simple and will add a personal touch to Obama's message - this is a voter to voter - woman to woman effort that will be focused on undecideds. We want them to know, that there are other women across this nation who believe in Obama's message of unity and hope and that it is okay for women to vote for him! Below highlights the scope of this campaign.

Pass It On: Write Postcards for Barack

You are invited to join women volunteers across the US in writing postcards to women in Pennsylvania that asks for their vote for Barack Obama. The goal is to write at least 100,000 postcards by April 7th - together we can achieve this goal!

If you want to participate or if your want to help coordinate postcard writing in your area, send us an e-mail at talisa_sheppard@myway.com or you may call us toll free at 800-557-6196

Here is how to participate in 3 easy steps:

STEP ONE: Individually or with other women in your community, purchase 10 or more postcards for each of you to write along with post card stamps. If possible, purchase postcards that represent your city or state.

STEP TWO: If writing postcards in a group, have a Postcard Party to get them all written and posted at the same time. Each postcard message should be brief and to the point - no more than 2-4 sentences. The following provides sample language:

Dear Fellow Voter, I voted (or I am voting) for Barack Obama for President because he is the best candidate to bring our country together to solve the problems we are facing. This is the type of leadership we need right now. I hope that you will vote for Barack too.

Sincerely, (Sign Your Name, City and State)

STEP THREE: Put stamps on each card, leave the return address and mailing address areas on each card blank (the cards will be addressed by volunteers), and mail all of your postcards together in an envelope(s) or box to:

WFO - Women For Obama Post Card Campaign 193 E. Rich Street Columbus, Ohio 43215

Please mail your postcards no later than Monday, April 7th.

Hi everyone, (Everyone, but especially the women) -

I read about an idea to have women write postcards to women voters in PA, as a get out the vote effort aimed particularly as "to women from women." I'm interested in doing it, and thinking about a "post card party" if there are other women who are interested.

If you think you'd be interested, PM me and I can send you the email I have about the post cards, and maybe we can organize a time & place to work on it together. It would probably have to be in the next week or 2, they want the postcards at the HQ by April 7th.

Thanks!

But then again, I once sat next to a guy smoking crack on the subway. I was one of only three people who ran off the car at the next stop. I guess everyone else was too lazy. So, I can't really complain about the PATH.

That reminds me of another story! This one was a while back. One night, not too late at night, I have a seat on the PATH, and I have my bag - like an open shopping bag - on the floor between my feet.

The PATH stops at Pavonia-Newport, and the guy who had been sitting next to me starts to stand up, and then he leans over and reaches right into my bag. I was like "Holy crap! He's stealing my stuff?"

So I said, "HEY!" (I was so shocked I really didn't know what to say) and then he kind of mumbled "I dropped something in your bag," all this as the doors are opening, people are moving around, and he opened his hand and showed me a little baggie of heroine! So, I guess he had dropped it in my bag and then decided to fish it out (thank god, right?) and then he kind of had to show me so that I wouldn't be screaming "Stop! He's stealing from me!"

But how weird, right? I mean, I guess at that point I was kind of glad he was taking his heroin back, but what a weird exchange, "Oh good, he's not stealing from me, just taking back the heroin he dropped in my bag."

Well, since we're going to reopen this topic, I'd like to address my PATH nemesis, who is any man who deems it appropriate to sit with his legs spread in a wide open V, thus forcing me to keep my thighs uncomfortably pressed together to avoid leg-to-leg contact. Seriously! We all have our 18 inches of seat, please don't cross the line into my area.

How about people (there was one last night), who sit with their feet splayed all the way out. So, now everyone who is standing in the crowded train has to try not to trip over his feet. It's not a recliner, it's a seat. Sit nicely and take up a little less room.

Grovester, I think I've encountered her, too. Whenever I see her, I just move to another section of the platform, away from her. Admittedly that's not easy when she's standing right by the bottom of the stairs, blocking your access just when a train is about to close its doors. I always think to myself: Gosh, what a sad way to live life - to be so angry that the highlight of your day is trying to piss off as many people as possible on a train platform.

She was blonde (probably fake), probably in her 50s. Shortish (5'-ish). Green sweater yesterday. She takes the 33rd St. train, and blocks the door to the WTC train.

I spent the day thinking about, how, if I saw her again, I would purposely block her from getting on her train. But I just can't sink that low. And besides that, if she actually missed the train, then I'd have to spend a few minutes on the platform while I waited for my train. Not worth it.

Oh my god. Yesterday morning. Grove Street PATH station. Platform level. My train comes. The door opens. This woman stands, on the platform, directly in front of the doors. With her hands on her hips so she takes up the majority of the doorway. People are coming off the train, and they have to try to side-step around her. They're saying "excuse me" but she just stands there.

I'm standing directly behind her. I figure she's letting people off and then she's going to step on once the doorway is clear.

But, no, everyone gets off, and she's still standing there. Oh, no! Now I'm going to miss my train! I say "Excuse me!" nice and loud, and then step around her, just in time.

As the doors shut, I can hear her cursing. I'm just barely inside the doorway, so I turn to look at her. And then the door re-opens. Apparently, this is her opportunity.

She says, and I quote, "Oh, next time, when the train comes, and it's not my train, I'LL move from where I'M standing, just because YOU'RE so important. "

To which I responded, "Good, don't stand in front of doors!"

And then she called me a "fucking moron." And then the doors shut.

Seriously? She just goes around standing in front of doors, and I'm the moron? She thinks that you don't move when people say "excuse me" unless they're "so important," and I'm the moron?

Grrr. She, too, is on notice. (Assuming this was not the same person, and there's more than one person that is so rude using the Grove Street PATH station.)

I'm amazed at all of these entries here regarding the service at my favorite diner The Brownstone. We have been going since the days it was The Newport - we go at least once a week for the past 9 years - have NEVER had an issue! The BEST pancakes in the whole town! I've shared dishes with my boyfriend for years - never have been charged. Service has always been good to excellent. The family knows us - knows us well - and have always been treated great there. The pancakes are great, but also the dinners are wonderful. The pasta dishes, the salads, etc etc etc! The Brownstone is always busy - has been for years. I'm just so surprised at all of the many negative things being said here on this page.

Ha ha. That's what I used to say. I thought everyone else was crazy. You'll see. I know my post is on here elsewhere so I won't recount the details. And yes, we went for years, yes, we knew the family, etc. etc. But some people have to see for themselves. I know, I was one of them.

A few weeks ago we had a fire, not at our house but at the house next to ours. We had to evacuate too, because of the smell of smoke (and because fire could spread.)

When we woke up and went outside, the JCFD was already there, doing their job. They were awesome.

We had called the firehouse to see if we could send anything - a basket of cookies maybe - and where and what shift would be the best. They said they'd rather we put our thanks down in a letter to the chief, so that's what we did.

I agree with everyone else on here, they're fabulous, and their response time is amazing.

Thanks JCFD!

Pink - So your call didn't mention Healy's arrest or "wrestled to the ground naked," "tax breaks for his 'cronies,'" his connections with the "corrupt" HCDO, whether he is "an embarrassment to the city" or anything like that?

Did you have the two sets of questions - about Healy (all the bad things, are they "convincing" arguments against voting for him) and about Manzo (all the good things, are the "convincing" arguments to vote for him)?

The only thing I could think is that maybe they switch to a different script depending on who say you'd vote for the first time they ask you? (i.e. if you answer the "right" way they've got no reason to spend their time pushing you?)

mrrogers Quote:
That wasn't really a push poll,it was more than likely trying to find out what are Healys major weaknesses.

I don't know, you could be right. It wasn't as if the caller would tell me, "Yes, I am conducting a push poll." But it was an 18 minute phone call total, and about 10 minutes of it was spent on Healy's "weaknesses" and Manzo's "strengths." I think that is part of what made me feel like it was a push poll: This idea that "We've got you on the phone for what you think is a 'poll' but instead you're just a captive audience for a 10 minute commercial for the candidate."

I don't have any incentive to make anything up. I like Lou Manzo. I didn't say that I would vote for him the first time or the second time I was asked.

And, if you know 10 people that got the calls, that might support the fact that it's a push poll. Regular polling only needs a small sample size to get a reliable result, the goal of push polling is to "survey" as many people as possible to get the message out.

I live in Ward E.

I joined Green Dimes. (www.greendimes.com). I was just sick of shredding piles of mail, and sick of id theft. For $20 they'll do all of the mass mailing opt-outs for you, and write to eliminate specific catalogs. And they plant trees for each member who joins! Check it out. I joined about 6 months ago, and I've seen a major decrease - almost completely - of junk mail. I have a bad habit of giving out my address - signing up for sweepstakes, etc. But if I start to get junk mail again, I let Green Dimes know, and they take care of it. I think it was worth it for me. It saves me time, it's good for the environment, and as a collateral consequence, yes, I guess it stops our post offices from being overworked so they concentrate on getting the real mail to our homes. (Although I still see mail for other addresses being delivered to our house all the time. That's something Green Dimes probably can't stop.) GreenDimes p.s. As much as I tried to keep this post sounding like an infomercial, I know it does. I'm just enthusiastic. If you're interested in trying it out, PM me your name and I can send you some email where I get a referral bonus. But I'm not in it for the referral, I just really think it's a great service.

Let the Mayoral Campaigning Begin (I've been Push Polled)
Home away from home
Home away from home

So starts the 2009 Mayoral Campaigning season.

I got a call this afternoon from, what I'm guessing is a "push poll" by Lou Manzo.

There were some general questions about what issues I thought were important for the city, what I thought of certain city and state politicians, etc.

Then I was asked "if the 2009 mayoral election were held tomorrow..." who would I vote for? (Followed by a list of 9-or-so names).

Then there questions about Healy - including whether or not he was "an embarassment to the city," something about him allowing tax abatements for his "cronies," and ties to the "corrupt" HCDO. There was many more questions, and the context was whether I thought they were strong arguments against voting for Healy. I was also asked about the fact that he was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, or that he was once wrestled naked... I think I lost track of that question somewhere... something about police responding to a noise disturbance. (I just kept thinking "Did he say naked?") And whether these were convincing arguments against voting for Healy.

Then there was a set of questions about Manzo - listing some of his accomplishments in the state assembly, such as making insurers pay for MRIs for breast cancer, laws against sex offenders using the internet, tougher penalties for gang involvement in crimes, laws allowing expungements for nonviolent criminal convictions, etc. - and whether I thought they were convincing arguments for voting for him.

It seemed to me that the "poll" was more about getting me to listen to 10 minutes of good things about Manzo and bad things about Healy. But I thought it was interesting that Manzo's camp must think that the election is between him and Healy. (What, is Fulop not a threat? Or do they just not have enough dirt to make up questions about him?)

There were also a few questions about other NJ politicians - Schundler, McCann, etc.

Then I was asked again "if the 2009 mayoral election were held today" with the same candidates. I guess the idea is whether someone would switch to Manzo after hearing the arguments?

Finally, there were some general questions about what newspapers I read, how often I go to church and whether I'm part of a labor union.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw it out there as general interest. If you see 702-932-3404 on your caller ID, pick it up, and you can hear the questions for yourself.

It's kind of confusing. Not that this is anything that can be made sense of. On one hand, I thought maybe they were ringing bells to make sure no one was home. (And then, since she didn't answer, they figured no one was home and busted in her door?) But, if that was true, that means they didn't want a confrontation with a person, so I'm surprised they didn't turn and leave when they found someone was home?

I wonder if it's better to answer the buzzer? Maybe try to use your gruffest "I'm a mean dude" voice? I have no idea.

Hope to see everyone then!

Home away from home

Part of me wants to send a letter to the NYTimes. Another part of me just hopes the less attention we give this stupid article, the less it will matter.

I've posted it here before, but I'll say it again and again, I have my own issue with NYers (or anyone from anywhere else) who spends their whole life bad mouthing NJ and then ends up moving here for whatever reason. (Or coming to the beaches or where ever else.) Stay the heck out. Your state is so much better - then stay there. We (or at least I) don't want you here, you don't want to be here, so go away. (End rant.)
