Grove Street bike lanes were once dubbed "The Bike Lanes to Nowhere." Now, the torch has been passed to the Heights. Those lanes are absolutely positively worthless.

When I was downtown, the stretch of Mercer starting at Barrow and continuing west was always a favorite spot (loved walking to the library). One of my favorite shots from a snow storm ~3 years ago on Mercer:

Now that I'm up in the Heights, there's so many cool pockets, it's hard to say an entire street. Sherman west of Summit is really awesome, as is the houses immediately around Sherman on Summit.

Jersey City bike lanes on wrong side of street, cyclists say

I've been saying this since day one. I've followed up with Bike JC about this and their response is "one step at a time" -- as in, let's get something, and then worry about fixing it. Biggest load of bullshit going. Once the lanes are painted, it will never get fixed.

So much for a group that advocates for bicycling. With their level of inefficiency and incompetence, I'm beginning to wonder if Bike JC is a department in the city government.

Why is it preferred to post this question to a message board than simply typing in "fire new jersey" in to Google?

Woke up and did the same thing around 2:30. Our place still smells the same way. Fire trucks were at Central and Bowers.

Edit: looks to be the fruit store next to Rite Aid on Central.

You also live in the zipcode that is consistently ranked the poorest and most crime-riddled among all Jersey City locations. No one here pays any attention to your locale recommendations.

Not necessarily. The process can include bringing bikes back to PATH stations in the evening.

If nothing is done, you are going to have to go to a PATH station to find a bike during the day, which limits the usefulness of the program for much of the city.

Seriously? You want someone to ferry the bikes from the PATH stations after the AM rush and then ferry those same bikes back before the PM rush hour? Do you know how time consuming, physically demanding, and labor intensive (expensive) that plan would be?

Bike share systems are intended to get cars off the street and are located in places that people commute to and from. Why place the inventory out in no-mans land during the day for that one person that wants to use a commuting bicycle for a joyride?

If you redistribute throughout the day, those who need to ride home will not have a bike at the PATH to do so.

Re: Bike Share System

Cart before the horse. At least that's what Jersey City is doing here.

I commute every day by bicycle. Since this time last year, I've ridden 2,200 miles -- and that's just me commuting to work in JC and NYC. I'm speaking from experience here:

Hoboken actually has dedicated bike lanes already in place. Hoboken also has new proposed lanes that get people to where they need to go (for instance, from the foot of Mountain Rd, down 1st, to the PATH).

Jersey City has none of this. There's been a hap-hazard rollout of bike sharrow on the roads so far. You'll find one road has them, and then you have to traverse several blocks to reconnect to another. The roads designated for bike lanes don't actually get cyclists anywhere, either. Jersey City has simply picked the widest streets (or streets most in the public eye - ahem Grove Street) to add the lanes.

Also, the bike sharrows in the heights are a raised decal, not actual paint. It took one snow storm for the plows to scrape the street and destroy the sharrows. Today, the bike lane indicators are either completely gone or destroyed beyond recognition. One decal in front of my place is just a sliver of the front tire -- the rest is gone.

I've taken pictures and forwarded them to Bike JC, a group that's supposed to advocate for these types of things. Their response was to "wait until spring so more lanes could be added." What about the destroyed lanes are already exist? Are we going to add more lanes with this shitty decal only to have the lanes destroyed again come Winter 2015?

If our city can't even put down bike lane lines that last more than 6 months, how does it expect to operate and maintain a physical transportation network?

I love watching the gentrification of this message board. When I first started lurking here many years ago -- before registering -- people were so excited to see a clean well-established business take 1.) an empty storefront. Then, it was about replacing 2.) the dollar store / discount stores on Newark. Now it 3.) MUST BE ARTISAN PIZZA OR WE REVOLT.

A drivers license and a recent bill? How absurd of them to verify your residence!

You went to their website AFTER your visit to the library.
Maybe you should have went to the website BEFORE your visit.

From:
http://www.jclibrary.org/resources/jcfpl-library-card

Quote:
You can obtain a card at the Main Library at 472 Jersey Avenue or at any of our branches. If you wish to prepare in advance, you may click on the Library Card Application highlighted below to print out the application form, then bring your competed application to the Jersey City Free Public Library with the appropriate documents as detailed below.

Residents of Jersey City:
Anyone high school age or above must show the following documents:
? A photo ID (such as driver?s license, school or work ID, current passport)
? Proof that you live in Jersey City, sent to you at your current Jersey City address through the mail within the past 30 days (such as a current gas/electric or water bill, medical statement, bank or credit card statement, postmarked handwritten envelope, mailing to a current PO Box, computer generated bills or other legitimate mail).
? The following are NOT acceptable as proof of address: leases or junk mail.

It's disgusting that you cry "FULOP" because of your own incompetence.

Yeah, if you want to spend $18 to walk around a 12 acre island with no museum, no pedestal and no crown access. Buying your tickets the day of gets you to the front of the island on the pathway, the restaurant, and gift shop--and that's it.

You might as well take the (free) Staten Island Ferry or the (free) walk along the LSP waterfront walkway.

No, the original poster was asking for specific items that are typically found in fruit stores run by Koreans, like the stores downtown.

Since you're so well versed in everything Jersey City, you already know that there are several Korean fruit stores in the Heights, the newest being Sweet Pineapple on Central. Despite the fact that the grocer is Korean, the items that the ORIGINAL POSTER is requested are absent because the area is not gentrified and there's less of a demand. No business owner -- Korean or not -- is going to stock their shelves with $10 bags of organic flour or organic milk that has a 25% price premium over regular.

Closer to Ogden, maybe. But again, like I originally posted before user1111111111 wanted to chime in with his irrelevant story on how long he's been in Jersey City, the areas outside of that are not ready.

Does anyone actually buy things from here? I was completely underwhelmed to see a few Ikea bookshelves with maybe 100 (used) books total up for sale. I commend them for their effort, but it sounds like a few buddies had a good idea one night and didn't really think the whole thing through.

Broken window theory is perfect here.

If the city wants to "tag" these buildings with the red abandoned building signs, the city should also clean up the graffiti.

And 1stGuy -- don't try to buy next to one of these abandoned properties. Many lenders will deny your request. If the lenders don't, the home owners insurance will deny you or destroy your bank account.

You must not be walking by at the right time. There's a patio out back that's used during the summer and there are holiday decorations on the lamp posts near the driveway.

Curious what includes "signs of life" .... is it sitting on the front steps every evening?

Ok, I'll bite.

FROM THE ARTICLE, FACTUALLY INCORRECT
Quote:
Views of the Manhattan skyline from Jersey City are so stunning that you might be inclined to walk the length of the Hudson waterfront. Good luck. A path along the river usually exists, but it's frequently broken up by hotels, condominium developments, and piers.

FACTUALLY CORRECT INFORMATION:
The only "break" exists at the Liberty Landing Marina, and that break is between the LSP footbridge and the Peninsula Park. No pier, hotel, or condo breaks up the path north of the Goldman Sachs tower. The pathway continues all the way up to the Stevens Institute hill in Hoboken.

Again, by law hotels and condos are required to provide waterfront access in the form of a pathway. How again is my quote out of context?

Since we're normally at one another's throats here, nothing can bond us together like an outsider sharing his two cents about a city and striking out on every single point he's trying to make.

Behold, the Super Bowl 2014 fan guide: Navigating Jersey City -- Tips for Visitors

In this article, you'll read some gems like....

Quote:
Even with a GPS in your pocket, it's not too hard to get lost.

... where the author claims Newark Ave and all its unpredictable behavior creates havoc for those trying to navigate downtown streets.

Or, you'll read about how much it sucks to have two feet in Jersey City ...
Quote:
Much of the city was not designed for pedestrians.

.... the same city that was ranked "Very Walkable" this past year on this website here.

The worst (and there's many) has to be this one ...
Quote:
Walking the waterfront is not easy

The author claims that condos and piers provide obstructions. The author has clearly never stepped foot on the walkway because every new development along the water has by law been required to provide public access to the waterfront. In fact, the only obstruction between Hoboken and Bayonne is a little sliver near the Morris Canal that connects Paulus Hook to Liberty State Park. This page can tell you even more!

What an absolute pile of trash.
