Student, 11, charged with pushing teacher in Jersey City

An 11-year-old Jersey City student was arrested in class on Thursday and charged with aggravated assault on her 61-year-old teacher at School 41 on Wilkinson Avenue, officials said.

After the 1:10 p.m. incident the teacher told a police officer posted at the school that her attacker had been fighting with another student in class and she told them both to sit down, reports said. But the 11-year-old resident of Salem Lafayette Court continued pacing about the classroom and then stood near the teacher's desk, reports said.

When the teacher again told the girl to take a seat, the student shoved the 61-year-old woman, causing her to strike her lower back on a radiator, reports said. The teacher complained of back pain and told police she would seek medical attention, reports said.

The student was charged with aggravated assault, processed at the police department's juvenile bureau on Cator Avenue, and picked up by her sister, reports said.

The Jersey City Board of Education spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment.
