There was also a design competition, sponsored by the Riverview Neighborhood Association. I never heard if they actually chose a winning design, or announced progress on the fundraising. Here is a link to the competition, with the RNA contact information. OP should e-mail them, for an update.

It's been almost 2 years now since Sandy destroyed it. Now it's getting covered in graffiti which is spreading to the sidewalks all over the park. Can't we just level it and plant or tree or something rather than debate the design?

Even before Sandy the gazebo's most common use was a hiding spot to get high behind.
