When the jets take that approach I never find the noise that awful, at least from Hamilton Park (those in the westernmost areas of JC might have another opinion). Seeing the jumbo jets make that crazy turn east and then west has always fascinated me. That east/west runway is much shorter then the north/south ones isn't it? Must not be an easy landing or approach, especially for the larger jets.

Newark Airport has shut down 1 of the 2 long runways, that run north-south, for 60 days for modifications and repairs. To deal with the reduced capacity while the runway is closed they are going to be using their 1 east-west runway more than usual. The approaches for this airport can bring planes over western Jersey City. The flight paths for this runway is not changing, they will be used more over the next 2 months because 1 of the other runways is closed.

As always you can make noise complaints here - http://www.planenoise.com/panynj/daPRAbr9/qs114wbt.php

A major 60-day rehabilitation project will begin this week at one of Newark Liberty International Airport's major north-south runways.
Star-Ledger file photo

NEWARK ? A major 60-day rehabilitation project will begin this week at one of Newark Liberty International Airport's major north-south runways.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, says the work will require a temporary change in flight patterns that will bring more planes than usual over communities in Jersey City, Bayonne and Staten Island.

But officials say any resulting community inconvenience may be tempered by the airlines' voluntary 15 percent reduction in scheduled flights over the construction period.

The work on Runway 4L-22R is due to start Tuesday.

It will keep the landing strip in a state-of-good-repair and add high-speed taxiways that will help reduce on-ground plane delays. The work also will create more than 500 jobs and approximately $152 million in regional economic activity.
