The phrase "later in life" does not apply to a 25 year old.

Michael Shurin isn?t your average Republican.
The 25-year-old Jersey City man is pro-choice, pro-gay marriage and finds inspiration in Barack Obama?s political rise.
That may make Shurin persona non grata to the national Republican Party, but he?s hoping it makes him moderate enough to win election to Congress from the new Eighth District.
Shurin is running in June?s GOP primary, which will nominate a challenger to U.S. Rep. Albio Sires, who is seeking his fourth full term in Congress. Shurin will face Bayonne Republican Washington Flores in the primary.
Despite repeated losses by Republicans seeking higher office in Hudson County, Shurin is not deterred.
?It can be done. Impossible does not exist,? he said.
Sires represents the current 13th District, which with redistricting has become the new Eighth District. The composition remains mostly the same, encompassing Belleville, East Newark, Fairview, Harrison, Hoboken, North Bergen, Union City, Weehawken, West New York and parts of Bayonne, Jersey City and Kearny.
A computer programmer born and raised in Woodcliff Lake, Shurin said he?s always loved politics. When he was 7 years old, he said, he?d watch ?Meet the Press.?
Later in life, Shurin became addicted to painkillers, an experience that has propelled the War on Drugs to the number one spot on Shurin?s list of priorities should he win a congressional seat. Shurin wants authorities to treat marijuana the same as alcohol, and he?s interested in setting up clinics to help wean addicts off drugs.
?Whether we like it or not, people out there are getting drugs,? he said. ?We want to help these people.?
Though he?s a Bergen County native, Shurin moved to Hoboken about three years ago, and then lived in Weehawken for about a year before settling in Jersey City. He worked for about five years in Journal Square.
?I kind of fell in love? with Hudson County, he said.
A newcomer to politics, Shurin said he was inspired to run when Obama knocked off then-Sen. Hillary Clinton in the 2008 race to win the Democratic nomination for president. Obama?s defeat of an entrenched politician was an indication that voters want ?fresh blood,? he said.
The primary is June 5.
