JERSEY CITY ? An assault and gunpoint robbery in Jersey City on Thursday night left one man in guarded condition and another out $7,000 that he offered as a reward to stop the beating, police said. Three friends had gone out after work and were leaving a Jersey City bar on Rose Avenue at 9:13 p.m. when two males armed with handguns approached them from behind at 6 Long St., officials said. One man, 55, continued walking toward his white van and got inside as the assailants began beating up his two friends, police said. The assailants continued to beat the victims until the 55-year-old, a driver for Jetro wholesale foods, got out of his van and offered them the $7,000 he had from deliveries that day, police said. The attackers fled after taking the money, reports said. One victim, a 54-year-old from Pamrapo Avenue, suffered a laceration above his eye, police said. The other, a 52-year-old from Virginia Avenue, suffered a laceration over his left eye, a laceration to his lip and bleeding on the brain, reports said The victim was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was listed in guarded condition in the intensive care unit yesterday, officials said. Police were unable to interview the victim because of his injuries, police said.
