Prosecutor: Knife 'planted' near body of Jersey City man beaten to death on Christmas Day

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY ? A Wolfgang Puck kitchen knife was placed near the hand of the Jersey City man who police say was beaten with a shovel and kicked and stomped to death by his three brothers-in-law on Christmas Day, officials said today.

"Based on the circumstances of the crime scene and the residence, investigators believe it was planted there after the homicidal assault took place," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said of the murder of Jeorge Alvendia, 44, in the garagae of his Roosevelt Avenue home.

Meanwhile, officials believe Alvendia may have told the three brothers to move out of his home Christmas Day, bringing the ongoing dispute among the men to a head, DeFazio said.
Elieser Paet, 44, beat Alvendia with a shovel while Paet's brothers, Francis, 37, and Wilfred, 39, kicked and stomped him, according to the criminal complaints. Alvendia's wife, Noemy, 51, was not at the Roosevelt Avenue home when the killing took place around 8 p.m., DeFazio said.

The wife dialed 911 when she returned home shortly after the killing, which investigators say likely stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the victim and the three Paet brothers who also lived at the Roosevelt Avenue residence, DeFazio said.
"This is something that had apparently been developing over a period of time," DeFazio said.

There is evidence at least some of those allegedly involved were drinking, DeFazio said.

"There is some indication that they might have been told by the brother-in-law that they had to leave the premises -- vacate the premises," DeFazio said of events leading up to the violence.
Jeorge Alvendia died of blunt force trauma to his head but he also suffered fractured ribs and severe facial injuries, DeFazio said based on the autopsy performed at the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark.

Hindering apprehension may be among the charges the grand jury will consider when the murder case is presented due to the knife that is thought to have been planted near Jeorge Alvendia, DeFazio said. There is no evidence suggesting the victim had armed himself, the prosecutor said.

The three brothers are being held at the Hudson County jail in Kearny in lieu of $500,000 cash-only bails. All three are natives of the Philippines and their immigration status is being looked into.

View Larger Map Three brothers charged in vicious Christmas Day murder in Jersey City Wednesday, December 28, 2011, 6:15 AM By John Heinis/The Jersey Journal Resized Image From left to right, Elieser Paet, Francis Paet and Wilfred Paet, appear on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, at Central Judicial Processing Court in Jersey City via video link from Hudson County Jail in Kearny, charged with beating their brother-in-law, Jeorge Alzendia, 44, to death with a shovel on Christmas night. Three brothers have been charged with murder in the vicious Christmas Day bludgeoning of their sister's husband, authorities said, but the motive in the attack remains a mystery. The victim, stomped, beaten and smashed with shovel in the garage of his Jersey City home, was identified Monday as Jeorge Alvendia, 44. Elieser Paet, 44, beat Alvendia with a shovel while Paet's brothers, Francis, 37, and Wilfred, 39, kicked and stomped him, according to the criminal complaints. Alvendia's wife, Noemy, 51, was not at the Roosevelt Avenue home when the killing took place, but arrived home shortly afterward, Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said. The three men are being held at Hudson County jail in Kearny. Their bail was set at $500,000, cash only, on Monday by Judge Fred Theemling. Immigration Customs Enforcement was informed of the incident given that all three men are residents of the Philippines, even though Wilfred Paet does have a visa to be in the United States. DeFazio said the murder was the result of "an ongoing family dispute," but he refused to provide any further information on a possible motive. Alvendia died of blunt force trauma to the head, and also suffered severe facial injuries and fractured ribs in the beating that occurred about 8 p.m. Christmas night, DeFazio said. The Paet brothers were arrested and charged on Monday and all appeared in Central Judicial Processing court via videolink from the jail today. "This is an extraordinary case in that you have three brothers simultaneously charged with a murder," DeFazio said. A man who identified himself as a friend of Noemy Alvendia answered the door at the home today, but declined to comment on the tragedy.
