FBI says violent crime rose in Jersey City last year; but police chief sees numbers differently
Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal The Jersey Journal

Jersey City touted a reduction in violent crime in 2010 but preliminary statistics released by the FBI today show there was an increase.

City officials said the difference is likely due to the way crimes are tallied on the state level as compared to the federal.

In March, Jersey City officials said violent crimes including homicide, rape, robbery and assault fell by 2 percent in 2010 as compared to the previous year.
