4 Jersey City historic sites get state preservation grants

Four Jersey City projects are among the 58 sites slated for Historic Preservation grants courtesy of the state.

The William Brennan Courthouse on Pavonia Avenue is set to receive $750,000 in state grants, while Downtown's Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse is slated for $250,000.

The grants, approved last week by the New Jersey Historic Trust, must be approved by the state Legislature before being awarded.

The Powerhouse grant will go toward putting a roof on the warehouse, which city officials hope will soon be home to a retail entertainment center, said Jersey City Redevelopment Agency Executive Director Robert Antonicello.

The West Bergen Historic District is set for $50,000 to conduct a study to determine if the area qualifies to be a legal historic district, said city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.
Paulus Hook Park, meanwhile, is slated to receive $50,000 to help pay for a total park redesign.
