View Larger Map Chased by cops, may was arrested and a handgun was found nearby Saturday, April 02, 2011 By TERRENCE T. McDONALD JOURNAL STAFF WRITER A 20-year-old Newark man was arrested in Jersey City late Thursday night after he led cops on a chase along Van Nostrand Avenue and discarded a .38-caliber handgun in an alley, according to police. Hanif S. Crawford, 20, of Newark was charged with three weapons offenses and obstruction, reports said. Crawford was one of four people gathered just before midnight on the roof of a Martin Luther King Drive apartment building. Shortly after police arrived on the scene investigating a complaint of "a disorderly group smoking drugs," Crawford bolted from the roof, running down four flights of stairs and onto the street as police chased him and ordered him to stop, according to reports. When he ducked into an alley off Van Nostrand Avenue, Crawford reached into his waistband and "threw something" in the alley before running to a parking lot across the street, where he was captured, police said. Police said they found a black .38-caliber handgun in the alley after Crawford's arrest.
