The University of Phoenix's Jersey City campus celebrated the official opening of its new Student Resource Center in the Newport section of the city Wednesday night.

The 8,000-square-foot facility, located at 88 Town Square, has several meeting rooms and is equipped with 50 computer stations outfitted with wireless technology.

"University of Phoenix is committed to providing students not only accessible, rigorous, and practical education but also the necessary resources to help them successfully complete their courses and graduate," said William Pepicello, president of the for-profit institution. "This new Student Resource Center will go a long way in helping do just that."

The University of Phoenix is the largest private university in America, with 476,500 students enrolled across 40 states. While the educational institution specializes in online programs, there are about 200 "campuses" and learning centers worldwide where students can attend classes.

The Jersey City campus first opened its doors at 100 Town Square in January 2005, spokeswoman Ashley Riegle said. There currently are 8,200 students enrolled at the Jersey City site, which offers degree programs in business and management.
