The fire was reported just before 2:30 a.m. at the New Jersey International and Bulk Mail Center, located at 80 County Road, reports said. The fire began when a conveyor belt ignited, reports said. Due to the damaged conveyor belt, local mail is being diverted to other customs service facilities in the tri-State area, said U.S. Postal Service spokesman George Flood. Approximately 200 pieces of mail were damaged in the fire, said Flood. Letters of explanation and claim forms will be sent with damaged mail, said Flood. No injuries to postal service employees were reported, said Flood. The fire was declared under control around 3 a.m. and employees were allowed to reenter soon after, according to a report by wpix.com.
