A 17-year-old Jersey City boy who was spotted passing a handgun back and forth with a friend was arrested after a foot chase as numerous police units converged on him Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
The Carteret Avenue boy was arrested on Kennedy Boulevard near Lexington Avenue at 4:16 p.m. and was charged with resisting arrest, weapons offenses and obstructing a government function, reports said.
Police got word the boy and a friend were passing the gun around at Bramhall and Bergen avenues, but the boy was then seen walking west on Lexington Avenue, where the officers spotted him, reports said.
Police officers pulled over and tried to stop the teen, but he took off running and threw the Glock 9mm handgun into a backyard on Lexington as he ran, reports said.
Eventually the boy tried to climb over a gate, but it collapsed and police subdued him, reports said.
The boy was processed at the police juvenile bureau, his mother was notified, and he was remanded to the Hudson County youth facility in Secaucus, reports said.
