A man who had been stabbed at least once was found dead in a Jersey City Heights residence this morning, but police have not yet released his name and the investigation into the incident is at a very preliminary stage, officials said.

When police responded to the location at Central and Hopkins avenues the "adult male" was already dead and he had suffered at least one stab wound to his torso, said Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.

The dead man's brother was present when police arrived. He has not been charged, DeFazio said.

Homicide detectives from DeFazio's office were called to the scene, as were officials of the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark, DeFazio said. The death is not classified as a homicide at this time, but the investigation is ongoing, DeFazio said.

The body remained at the location until this afternoon before being taken to the Medical Examiner's Office, DeFazio said, adding that additional information on the case is expected shortly.

Anyone with information on the death is asked to call the Hudson County Prosecutor's Offices' Homicide Squad at (201) 915-1345.

Bayonne man turns in shotgun after burglary arrest in Jersey City

A shotgun was recovered by Jersey City police this weekend after they captured a Bayonne man on burglary charges in the Heights and he arranged to have the stolen gun returned in exchange for a good word on his behalf, officials said.

On Friday, Miguel Santana, 36, of Prospect Avenue, was arrested just after midnight on Poplar Street and charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools, officials said.
The arrest came after a Leonard Street resident heard her side window shatter and screamed when she saw Santana in the alley, officials said. Santana ran but police found him carrying a bag with a crowbar and gloves inside, reports said.

At the police station, Santana said he would help police recover a shotgun taken during a recent burglary on Terrace Avenue if they would put in a good word for him with the courts, reports said.

Santana called an unknown man and instructed him to put the 12-gauge in a garbage bag and place it in a garbage can at Corbet and Stuyvesant avenues and to watch it until police arrived, reports said, adding that police recovered the gun there. The officers said they couldn't promise anything, but would let the court know about Santana's cooperation.
